Dance & Cheer Clinics Taught by Pro Cheerleaders Alumni

Professional Cheerleaders Alumni is now offering clinics for dance teams, cheer teams, summer camps, community organizations and groups in the Jacksonville area.

PCA focuses on mentoring young girls so that they have an opportunity to learn from the lessons and experiences that led our NFL alumni cheerleaders to their success, whether as a professional cheerleader or in life. This is accomplished through our cheer, dance and team building programs and by sharing our life skills with those we work with in a mentoring role.

Our goal is that every participant has a positive and enjoyable experience regardless of her skill, ability, experience. Each clinic includes instruction of dance routines, short cheers, and group team building sessions. We also allow time to sit and talk with the groups about PCA’s mission: Dreams…Goals…Actions to empower girls to set goals and take action to follow their dreams.

2010 AYC Cheer ClinicEach participant will have the opportunity to develop new skills, gain confidence, and learn life-lessons regarding the importance of teamwork, responsibility, sportsmanship, and discipline.

Professional Cheerleaders Alumni, Inc. Partners with Alhambra and Locks of Love

To celebrate it’s current show, “Hairspray,” The Alhambra Theatre & Dining will host a hair donation event for Locks of Love on Sunday, March 13 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The community is invited to come to the Theatre and donate their hair, which will be cut and collected by local hairstylists (and re-styled!), then sent to Locks of Love where they will turn the donated hair into wigs for children fighting illness or undergoing treatment. In addition, the Alhambra will donate 5% of the day’s ticket sales from both of its performances of Hairspray to Locks of Love.

The Hair-Raiser and Fundraiser event will benefit Locks of Love, a public non-profit organization that provides vacuum fitted hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. They meet a unique need for children by using donated human hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. Others have suffered severe burns or injuries or endured radiation treatment to the brain stem or other dermatological conditions that result in permanent hair loss.

The organization, which began operation in 1998, provides the prostheses to children, ages 6-21, every 18 months for a total of up to 10 hairpieces. It is estimated that children comprise over 80 percent of the donors, making this a charity where children have an opportunity to help children. The prostheses they provide help to restore self-esteem and confidence, enabling these children to face the world and their peers.

Other local organizations are signing on to help. Professional Cheerleaders Alumni, Inc., a group of former Jacksonville Jaguars Cheerleaders, will be partnering with Locks of Love and the Alhambra for this event and members will be there to provide assistance and support those donating their hair. Two Chick-Fil-A locations, one on Hodges Boulevard and one at the St. Johns Town Center, will provide refreshments to volunteers and donors.

There is no need for advance reservations; however donors must adhere to the following guidelines: the donated hair must be at least 10 inches in length; it must be bundled in a pony tail or braid; hair must be free of bleach, though colored and/or permed hair is acceptable.

The musical “Hairspray” runs February 18 through April 4, 2011 at the Alhambra Dinner Theatre in Jacksonville. Show times are 8:00 PM for evening shows Tuesday through Sunday. Doors open at 6:00 PM and the buffet starts at 6:30 PM. Matinees on Saturday are at 1:15 PM. Doors open at 11:00 AM and the buffet starts at 11:15 AM. Sunday matinee is at 2:00. About the new Alhambra Theatre & Dining

The Alhambra Theatre is the nation’s oldest continually operating professional dinner theatre and the only professional resident theatre between Atlanta and Miami. Opened in 1967, The Alhambra has hosted legends such as Tony Curtis, Claude Aiken, Sid Cesar and Cesar Romero, and, recently, Loretta Swit. The Alhambra was the place of Betty Grable’s final acting role. The Alhambra is also home to former Miss America, Orange Park native Leanza Cornett who started at the Alhambra when she was 15. In November 2009, the Alhambra was purchased by Theatre Partners, LLC, headed by Jacksonville entrepreneur and Alhambra patron, Craig Smith as way to give back to Jacksonville and preserve what he believes is one of its cultural jewels.

Audition Prep Classes Held by Professional Cheerleaders Alumni for the 3rd Year

pcaThe Professional Cheerleaders Alumni, comprised of former Professional NFL Cheerleaders, are launching the Third Annual Audition Prep Class to prepare ladies (17 & over) interested in auditioning for professional or semi-professional cheerleading or dance teams. Many pro teams in Jacksonville begin holding auditions as early as February for the 2010 season, and these NFL Alumni are offering their experience and advice to help make the cut.

Training classes are held twice a week from January through March at Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym on San Jose in Jacksonville. Bailey’s has partnered with Professional Cheerleaders Alumni (PCA) again as their official gym, offering the use of their state-of-the-art facilities for classes. PCA, in turn, is offering this class free to Bailey’s members.

The Audition Prep Classes will include techniques needed for auditions such as turns, kicks, and basic dance steps. Darlene Clancy, Director of the Audition Prep Classes says “Our classes offer an inside edge that only alumni of professional teams can give. We have an exciting program lined up, including hair and make-up consultants to show the ladies how to apply and select colors which will compliment their skin tones. A trainer from Bailey’s will discuss the importance of exercise and nutrition. During each class our alumni members will offer feedback, answer questions, and teach choreography.”

The President of Professional Cheerleaders Alumni, Kristin Doakes, says “In the past two years over 100 participants have taken our Audition Prep Classes. It has become a mentoring program for me and our alumni members who volunteer, giving participants one-on-one advice about auditions, what to expect, and how to make a positive first impression. It’s an honored opportunity to watch them transform and grow, especially their confidence. Past participants have said that even if they didn’t make the team they are auditioning for, they have grown from the experience we teach in classes.”

The 2009 Arts in the Park Festival was another great success! The Arts in the Park Festival is a wonderful event showcasing all the different cultural arts we have here in our great city of Jacksonville, Florida. Several local artists come out to demonstrate their fabulous skills. Booths showcase artist’s paintings, pottery creations, jewelry crafting etc. In addition, several dance performers and groups were invited to show off their talents. Professional Cheerleaders Alumni members Donna, Latricia, Missy and myself along with our PCA Jr. Teen Cheerleaders were proud to be included.

We took center stage downtown by the beautiful St. Johns River on Saturday, October 17th, 2009 and performed a thirty minute show for this awesome community event. With the collective efforts and cool choreography the crowd was definitely entertained. They may have even been a little spooked by our MJ tribute routine “Thriller” (masks and silly spray included of course). In addition the crowd was able to get up and participate by shaking their groove thang to some favorite line dances, Bazooka Bubble Gum and the infamous YMCA. It was a fun and exciting way to give back to our community. We look forward to many more opportunities to team up with the Arts in the Park program.
