Cheerleader Profile: Ladies of Ontario Fury Dancer Courtney
Our next featured cheerleader is Courtney, a first year member of the Ladies of Ontario Fury.
Why did you become a professional cheerleader?
Dance has always been a huge part of my life. I started at the age of 5 and have been a part of competition and high school dance teams. I was a student in my college dance program and missed being a member of a team. I wanted to continue to further my passion for dance and expand my horizons.
What was your favorite experience as a professional cheerleader?
The rush of running out to set for a routine at my first game! Performing in front of a huge crowd is always a favorite experience.
What is your favorite dance style?
I would definitely admit that jazz is my favorite dance style. I love a fast paced and fiery routine to pump me up! It also gives me a chance to show my technique.
What is your favorite dance move? What is your go to dance move?
My favorite dance move would be pirouettes because I’m a fast turner and my go to dance move would be anything with a massive hair flip!
What are the three words that describe you?
Three words to describe me would be spontaneous, active, and genuine
What is something that most people don’t know about you?
I know the lyrics to almost every song, (mainstream radio, oldies) but I’m a terrible singer. I don’t let that stop me! I also love going to the movies. I particularly enjoy scary movies, but I am open to seeing anything.
What is your favorite music genre? Who is your favorite musical artist?
I love all types of music, but my favorite genres are country and electronic dance music. For country, my favorite music artist is Rascal Flatts and my favorite EDM artist is Skrillex.
Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? Or some other app. What’s your favorite app?
My favorite app is Facebook because I can keep in contact with distant family members and friends.
Who is the one person that inspires you the most?
My mom inspires me the most. She worked hard for my family and taught me to live passionately for my dreams and goals. My mom lost an 8 month battle against lung cancer and her fight and drive to beat it inspires me greatly. She shared the same love for dance as I did and I will continue to dance in her spirit.
What advice would you tell someone who aspires to become a professional cheerleader?
Focus on yourself as an athlete and dancer, your lifestyle will change dramatically for the better. Hit the gym and take as many dance classes as possible. You are your own cheerleader-confidence is everything! Attend as many auditions as possible and go for the experience. Don’t become discouraged and show those judges what you’re made of! Dance your heart out and leave nothing on that audition floor.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Hopefully in ten years, I will still be working as a Recreation Therapist and a dance teacher/coach. I will be married with a family and a pug. I also aspire to open my own competitive dance studio and offer classes for dancers with disabilities.
