Ultimate Cheerleaders

New Orleans VooDoo Dolls

Most teams have pretty straight forward names: Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders, Denver Nuggets Dancers, New York Islanders Ice Girls.

And there are the variations with a feminine suffix: Oakland Raiderettes, Seattle Sea Gals.

The sometimes squads try to get cute. Most of the time it works: Buffalo Jills, Philadelphia Soulmates, SF 49ers Gold Rush.

But sometimes it fails miserably: I am looking at you late-70s to mid-80s Los Angeles Rams Embraceable Ewes!

And then there is my all-time favorite name for a dance or cheer squad: The New Orleans VooDoo Dolls!

The name fits with the city, the history and their rabid fans.

Quick change artists! The VooDoo Dolls wore four different outfits this game.

The VooDoo Dolls Brain Trust: Director Jasmine Martijn, Trainer Toni B, and Jasmine’s assistant Nicole Norman

Jasmine was an original VooDoo Doll and represented her squad at Arena Bowl XXIV. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina she relocated to Atlanta and cheered for the Georgia Force for two years. Nicole cheered for the New Orleans Saintations and danced for the New Orleans Hornets Honeybees.

And both Jasmine and Nicole got engaged in the last month or so. Congratulations, Ladies!

Toni B, who helps keep the Dolls in such great shape, is a fitness competitor and also the owner of Toni’B’s Avid Center.

This was the last home game of the season. Here Jasmine, and VooDoo co-owner Mary Ann Newman honor Arena Bowl XXVI Dream Team representative Brittany.
