Ultimate Cheerleaders

The New York Giants came a calling to the deep south to do battle with the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football.  There has been a bit of controversy with the Giants of late, some players were reportedly dissatisfied with the play of quarterback Eli Manning and expressed their feelings to the media.  So this game had a little more riding on the outcome for the Giants, who were on the verge of a total rebuild.

There was also some controversy surrounding the hometown Falcons as well, who have so far under performed and have yet to display the consistency on both sides of the ball that a super bowl contender is expected to do.  Falcons all world wide receiver Julio Jones is still awaiting his first touchdown reception, ironic considering he is one of the league leaders in receptions and receiving yards.  And then there is the loss of all star running back Devonte Freeman, another reason for the slow start.  So there was much at stake for the Falcons as well.

This game turned out as one would have expected, except that the Giants, with their embattled quarterback, played competitively.  Eli Manning threw for 399 yards and a touchdown and kept the game close well into the fourth quarter until the superior Falcons ultimately hung on for the victory.  Final score: Falcons – 23, Giants – 20.

We continue our coverage of Week 7 with a review of the Texans vs Jaguars game.  The Jaguars were the second best team in the AFC last year, finishing as the runner up in the AFC championship game, and they were expected to do at least as well this year.  Unfortunately, Leonard Fournette, their gifted running back, has been injured of late and QB Blake Bortles reverted to a more error prone version of his prior self.  All of this was bad news for the Jaguars who turned the ball over three times before benching Bortles for replacement level player Cody Kessler.

The Texans were not all that “special” themselves.  Deshaun Watson proved that he was a mere mortal himself, completed 12 of 24 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown.  But he and fellow Texan Lamar Miller, who rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown, were more than enough to carry the day.  Texas win 20 – 7.

With the game recap out of the way, let’s turn our attention to the ROAR of the Jaguars who were on hand to provide a little excitement for the hometown fans.  Click here to view the Jaguars game day gallery.

The Browns vs Buccaneers game, on paper, lacked a little excitement with two teams that were struggling for mediocrity, but this game was more than meets the eye.  It was a competitive game that went deep into overtime before it was settled and a winner crowned.

The hero of the game was an unlikely candidate in Buccaneers kicker Chandler Catanzaro, who had missed an extra point and a field goal in regulation.  So it came as a surprise that with less than two minutes left in the overtime period, Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter entrusted his struggling kicker to attempt a 59 yard field goal to end the game, but Catanzaro had enough leg and then some to split the uprights for the victory.  Buccaneers win 26 – 23 in OT.

We continue our coverage of Week 7 of the NFL regular season with a look at the Kansas City Chiefs game against the visiting Cincinnati Bengals.  The Chiefs are arguably the best team in the AFC and the Cincinnati Bengals with a 4 – 2 record coming into the game should have been a good test.  However, the Chiefs, led by their three headed monster of Patrick Mahomes, Kareem Hunt and Tyreek Hill absolutely destroyed the Bengal.  Mahomes threw for 358 yards and four touchdowns, Hunt scored one rushing touchdown and two receiving touchdowns, and Hill dropped in another touchdown for good measure.  Final score: Chiefs – 45, Bengals – 10.

It was a historic day in Baltimore where two milestones were made…one good and one not so good.  Drew Brees of the visiting New Orleans Saints threw his 500th touchdown passes, joining an elite club that includes Brett Favre, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.  The other milestone was made by Ravens kicker Justin Tucker, arguably the most accurate field goal kicker in the NFL, who missed is first extra point conversion of his career.  He was 222 for 222 on extra points since entering the league in 2002.  Now he’s 222 for 223 and unfortunately for the Ravens, that first missed extra point cost them the game.  Final score, Saints – 24, Ravens – 23.

Whenever the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins play, there is something big on the line because these two teams have so much history together.  This week, the division lead was at stake for both teams and given the fact that every team in the NFC East has multiple losses, the winner has the inside track to the playoffs…and the loser…well its unlikely that the runner up will get a wild card slot given the competitiveness of the division.

In game that was back and forth, the outcome was decided on a last second field goal attempt by Dallas kicker Brett Maher that bounced off the left upright.  The Redskins endured and won the game, 20 – 17.  With the victory, the Redskins take a 1 1/2 game lead over the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys.
