Ultimate Cheerleaders

Los Angeles Laker coach Phil Jackson once called the city of Sacramento, an old “cowtown”.  I suppose the old zen master said that to get a rise out of his opponents, whom at the time, were putting up a fierce fight during the NBA playoffs many a year ago.  And as time passed, that moniker has stuck even though Sacramento is the capital of California, perhaps the most modern and prosperous state in the Union.

In truth, while I was driving around Sacramento I did see more than a few of the lovable bovines, but I would suggest to coach Phil that a more appropriate name might be “cheertown” because as I found out, there’s a lot of dance talent in old Sac-town.

This past Saturday, the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL held the first of two preliminary auditions for their 2011 cheerleading squad.  More than forty young women braved the cold weather to audition for the Lady Lions.  And though it was cold outside, the auditions were hot.

Audition FAQs

What Are You Looking For?

We are looking for 32 Lady Lions with a passion for football. Essentially we need physically fit, attractive and confident young women with great personalities who love to interact with fans. Previous dance/cheer experience is a plus.

What Should I Bring To the Tryout?

Participants need to bring a non-returnable resume and headshot. Because the first audition is a potentially long day, performers should bring plenty of snacks, water, towel, curling/flat irons, and make-up to re-fresh throughout the day.  A state-issued Driver License, Identification Card or Passport.

What Should I Wear To the Tryout?

Dress should consist of a half top (sports bra, crop top) and shorts (hot shorts, dance trunks or briefs preferred, stomach must show) with dance or non-marking sole tennis shoes. Flesh colored nylons or dance tights are required!  Keep in mind, the judges will want to see what you would look like in the Lady Lions Uniform.

A special audition outfit is not required, but if you would like to order a costume or see examples of what to wear you may go to our Facebook page or visit:

www.angelakingdesigns.com, www.dadesignsdancewear.com, www.thelineup.com.

How Should I Wear My Make-Up?

Make-up should be worn.  We recommend stage make-up in shades that compliment you.  The Lady Lions wear a red lipstick in uniform; we highly encourage candidates to do the same at auditions.

How Should I Wear My Hair?

Hair should be worn down in a current hairstyle, make sure it is not in your face. Hair does not need to be your natural color, but no extreme colors like red, blue, purple etc.

What If I Have a Tattoo?

If a tattoo is visible in your audition attire, please cover it with makeup.  Members of the Lady Lions cover all tattoos visible when interacting with fans and on game day.
What About Jewelry?

Lady Lions are allowed to wear one-stud in each ear and an engagement and/or wedding band. No other jewelry is allowed.
Please take all visible piercings out before auditions. This includes tongue rings and belly button rings.

What Should I Not Bring?

Family, friends and fans. The preliminary audition is closed and limited to participants only. The finals are open to the public.

What Will The Audition Process Be?

Preliminary auditions will be a multi-step process.  Candidates will start the day with a short warm-up.  A short across-the-floor routine will be taught and candidates will perform in group of 2.  If needed, judges will deliberate and the Director will announce the numbers of those moving on to the next round.

Candidates will then learn a short dance routine that is similar to what Lady Lions perform on game days.  Candidates will be given a short amount of time to go-over the routine and then broken up in groups of 2.  When it is a candidate’s turn, she will give a short speech about herself and then perform the dance routine twice in front of the judges.  After all candidates have auditioned the judges will deliberate and the Director will announce the numbers of those who are Finalist.

Finalist will receive information regarding the Final auditions at the end of Prelims.

Is there a minimum/maximum age limit?

You must be 18 by June 1, 2011. There is not a maximum age for tryouts

The Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League are seeking dancers to take part in auditions for the team’s 2011 cheerleading squad. The cheerleading team, the Lady Lions, will perform at all four Mountain Lion home games this fall and will serve as ambassadors for the organization throughout the season.

Let me say on a personal note that the 66ers dancers are well taken care of by Byron Marquez and his staff. They get to spend their down time not in a cramped locker room, but a corporate suite and dine on catered food. It’s a great gig and the Inland Empire 66ers minor league baseball team offers a great environment, not only for fans but the dancers as well. Several former 66ers dancers have gone on to perform with the Charger Girls, Clippers Spirit, and the Laker Girls, so this is a great place to start for the aspiring professional dancer.

Fall weather returned to Southern California just in time for the playoff run.  The San Francisco 49ers flew into town to battle their in state rival, the San Diego Chargers, in a game that would determine their playoff fate.  A loss this late in the season would inevitably doom the loser to post season oblivion,

On paper, this game seemed to be an even match between two inconsistent, but talented teams in the midst of their division races.  But in reality, the Chargers showed that the 49ers have a way to go to be considered worthy of such an honor.  Philip Rivers threw three touchdown passes to Vincent Jackson and the Chargers defense stifled the 49ers, giving up only one meaningless touchdown in the last three minutes of the game.   The Chargers soundly defeated the 49ers, 34 – 7.

In the Battle for California…advantage San Diego.

And now, we begin the stream of consciousness portion of our article.  I have often wondered if people read my articles or if they just look at the photographs.  We shall see, but I am getting ahead of myself.

Last Sunday in Qualcomm stadium, it was announced that the rock band Foreigner would be playing in the Bud Light Power Party at the final home game of the season.  I found it a little curious that they would play a pregame party, but I was up to hear them play.  I am more of a The Clash kind of guy, but a free concert is nice.  I would later find out that they were promoting a new album and during the game, their songs would be played while the Charger Girls danced.

While in the power party, CG Maria informed me that she and a few of the other Charger Girls would be performing along with Foreigner on the stage.  Now that’s cool.  Unfortunately they were scheduled to perform around 4:15 PM and I would already be inside the stadium.  I like to get in early to avoid any potential hassles and being that this was the last game, I was going to try to bring in my long telephoto lens.  If you have read my prior article, Odysseus and the Charger Girls, you may remember my difficulty in doing so.  Other ticket holders have reported to me that they had no issue bringing in and using such equipment recently, so I wanted to see if I could too for this special game.

Fortunately, I was able to bring it in and was able to get some decent shots of the Charger Girls in their famous Blue Velvet Christmas Uniforms.

Okay let’s begin this week’s coverage of the Charger Girls with the Line Captains: Tiffany, Katie, Giselle and Ashlie.

While in the Bud Light Power Party, I met several friends and family of the Charger Girls.  I met Giselle’s parents and her boyfriend.  I ran into Brianna’s mother.  And I had the opportunity to meet Kylie’s grandmother and her father, who knew of me from my personal website, thehottestdanceteam.wordpress.com.  It was nice meeting them and getting to chance to chat with them.

I visit the Power Party often, usually to get a calendar or photo autographed.  But I also hang out there to chat with the Charger Girls and garner a tidbit of information or two.  For example, I discovered Amy is 28 years old (she looks a lot younger, if you ask me!) and has a beautiful daughter.  I usually don’t include photos of children, but I had her permission, so I snapped one with my iPhone 4.

And in talking to the girls, I sometimes answer their questions about the blog or my articles.  Courtney asked me if I was still recognizing a Charger Girl of the Day.  Apparently, she missed out on last week’s honoree and wondered if I discontinued the practice.  I assured her that I still recognize the CGOTD and will continue to do so in the future.

Well I hope she catches this week’s Charger Girl of the Day.
