Four St. John’s dancers live out the dream of dancing professionally in the NBA.

Performing as a member of a collegiate dance team is a dream for many aspiring dancers, but for a quartet of St. John’s University dance team alumnae it was only the beginning.

“Being a member of the St. John’s dance team is an experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything,” said Jackie Fowler, a 2013 graduate and current dancer with the Boston Celtics. “Dancing with St. John’s helped push me mentally and physically way further than I had ever done before. Because of my coaches at St. John’s, I learned how much hard work, determination and passion can transform someone.”

At St. John’s, Fowler served as a two-time captain, a moment she says was one of the “defining opportunities in my dancing career.” After graduating, Fowler was offered a job in June dancing with the Boston Celtics and moved up to Massachusetts to pursue her dream. Fowler plans to continue dancing in the NBA, but hopes to one day open a studio for low income families so that more aspiring dancers will be able to experience the beauty that being a dancer has to offer.

From taking second place in college nationals to a trip to the NCAA Tournament, being a member of the St. John’s University dance team meant the world to 2011 graduate Michaela Stanley. “Being on the team was by far the best part of college,” said Stanley. “Dancing is what I love and the St. John’s dance team allowed me to do that and even expand my horizons.”

Stanley has spent the past two seasons dancing professionally for the Washington Wizards as a Wizard Girl. With the Wizards, Stanley has traveled to China and Brazil and last summer even had the opportunity to dance for the USA Basketball Team in front of President Obama in Washington, D.C.

“I want to keep dancing until my body can’t live this lifestyle any longer,” said Stanley. “After that I would like to coach or work in the sports entertainment industry at least. We’ll see where the road takes me!”

For Kerrie Greene, performing with the St. John’s University dance team became the turning point in her young dancing career. “It was one of the greatest experiences of my life,” said Greene. “I feel that dancing really ‘clicked’ for me in college.”

After three seasons with the St. John’s dance team, Greene was offered a chance to dance with the New York Knicks and she is currently in her second season with the team. “It’s an amazing opportunity and I truly feel happy and honored to be a part of it. I believe that career and passion go hand-in-hand, you have to love your job and that is exactly why I do it,” said Greene. “I don’t know what the future holds for me, but I’m overjoyed about what I’m doing right now.”

For most college dancers, the dream to go professional either begins or ends at graduation, but for one senior St. John’s dancer the dream began even earlier than expected. After being named a team captain her junior year, Julia Evans is living her dream as a New York Knicks City Dancer, with former teammate Kerrie Greene, while having the opportunity to finish her undergraduate degree at St. John’s.

“Being a member of the St. John’s University dance team has been one of the best experiences of my life,” said Evans. “My passion for dance has only grown stronger while at St. John’s and I have my coaches and teammates to thank for that. I’ve grown so much not only as a dancer but as a person.”

With one year left before graduating in May, Evans plans on continuing her career as a professional dancer while trying to make her way into the marketing industry. “This is something I’ve dreamed about doing since I was a little girl and I’m so blessed and thankful to have this opportunity. I’ve always wanted to work in the marketing field for a professional sports team or entertainment business, but for now I’m just trying to enjoy my senior year and continue living my dream!”

Former Director/Choreographer of the Miami Heat Dancers (2001-2011) Janine Thompson-Brown recently started a program to train dancers and cheerleaders for professional & semi-pro dance/cheer team auditions. The first workshop is scheduled next month in Miami, and she’s planning on having future workshops in various cities.

Before the sun rose on October 16, Alexandria, Brittany Camille and Leigha Marie were at Logan airport, carrying their passports and 16 suitcases packed for a two week trip to China (we know what you’re thinking…. But five of those suitcases contained posters for autograph sessions – they weren’t all shoes and poms)!

NFL China invited the Patriots Cheerleaders to make their 7th visit to China to participate in the NFL Home Field events in Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai – a program designed to give Chinese fans an American football game day experience, which of course wouldn’t be complete without Cheerleaders! Over the next 10 days the ladies will be hosting youth cheerleading clinics, making performances, signing autographs and interacting with fans.

After twenty hours of flying, the Patriots Cheerleaders touched down in Hong Kong, enjoyed a day of sights and traveled by train to the city of their first NFL Home Field destination. Check back soon for photos and blogs from tomorrow’s Guangzhou event.

Until then, cheers from the other side of the world!!

In a few days, the CFL Toronto Argonauts Alumni Cheerleaders will take the field for their annual “Pink” game half-time show, in honour of breast cancer awareness. Members of the 1996-2012 group have been rehearsing hard this past month, under the instruction of their Choreographer Rochelle Stultz, in preparation for their portion of the performance. Cheerleaders from over 4 decades will perform together with the current squad at half-time.

Says one Argos Alumni Cheerleader, Dawn Maracle (1999-2001 seasons):

“I am so excited and honoured to be a part of the Alumni pink game this year. It’s a poignant return for me, not just as an alumni cheerleader, but also as a cancer survivor. I look forward to returning to the field with a zest for life that is easily matched by my teammates, who share the same passions for dance, performance, fundraising for a good cause, and entertaining the crowd! On the 24th, I am looking forward to increasing the enjoyment of the fans while also raising lots of money for breast cancer research. A favourite memory as a cheerleader is being featured in the 2001 swimsuit calendar and raising money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. What a great experience!”

Dawn is among numerous teammates who have had cancer touch their lives in various ways, through family, friends, colleagues or teammates. The Argos take on the Winnipeg Bluebombers at 730 pm on October 24th at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Contact members of the Alumni teams or visit www.argonauts.ca for ticket details. NFL and CFL Alumni Cheerleader Elizabeth Morgan will keep us posted from on the field as these talented ladies return to cheer for the cause!

Colorado Mammoth Wild Bunch dance team auditions concluded late Wednesday night at FORZA Fitness and Performance Club in downtown Denver, Colo. with the naming of the 2014 team. Nine rookies join three veterans on the squad, which will perform at all Mammoth home games and appear at select community events throughout the year.

“We’ve assembled a great team, and I’m proud of every woman who auditioned,” said dance team manager Amy Jo Wagner. “It’s always tough to say goodbye to dancers throughout the audition process, but I feel fortunate to have had so much talent try out for this year’s team.”

Twenty-two finalists danced to three songs in front of a panel of nine judges on Wednesday.

Team captain Sammie, a five-year veteran, said that one thing about the first-year finalists really stood out.

“The technique these rookies had this year – it was very, very impressive!”

So impressive that, for the first time in Wild Bunch audition history, several newcomers were unanimous selections by the judges!

“I was blown away by the quality of the competition,” said Mammoth president & general manager Steve Govett. “The Wild Bunch is an integral part of the Mammoth experience, and they are ambassadors of our organization in the community. I have great expectations for the twelve women who stood out above the rest.”

For first-year Wild Bunch dancer McKenna, the 11-day process from first audition to interview to finals is something she said she’ll always remember.

“It was just so much fun. I made a lot of really good connections.”

Judges selected McKenna as one of the 12 in the hour-long deliberation. When Wagner returned to notify the women who made the cut, Kelsey heard eleven numbers called before her dream came true.

“This isn’t real! I was in shock when I heard my number. I didn’t think (Amy Jo) was going to say it because I was the very last person.”

Norwegian Cruise Line and the Miami Dolphins announced today that the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders will christen Miami’s ultimate ship, Norwegian Getaway, as the official Godmothers. The Christening Ceremony will take place on February 7, 2014 on board Norwegian Getaway, the largest ship to homeport year-round in Miami. The line also announced a partnership with the Miami Dolphins that designates Norwegian Cruise Line as the “Official Cruise Line” of the Miami Dolphins and Sun Life Stadium.

“Norwegian Getaway is Miami’s ultimate ship, so the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders are a great fit with our brand as they are excellent role models and global representatives of South Florida,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s president and CEO. “There’s no better match here in Miami than to have these outstanding women christen our new ship.”

“We are honored to be selected by Norwegian to be the Godmothers of their newest ship, Norwegian Getaway. Norwegian Cruise Line is a first class organization and a well-known brand in our community, making this an ideal partnership,” said Emily Snow, director of the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders. “It is truly a privilege to be named as the Godmothers of Norwegian Getaway and we are anxiously awaiting the christening celebration.”

Norwegian Cruise Line is also partnering with the Miami Dolphins throughout the football season at Sun Life Stadium and is an official sponsor of the team. At each home game, ticket holders can picture how they would “Cruise Like a Norwegian” by having their photograph taken in front of a Norwegian Getaway backdrop and they can enter a sweepstakes to win a cruise for four on Norwegian Getaway. On-site ambassadors are available with information about Norwegian’s newest ship and overall fleet. During the Miami Dolphins “Salute to Service” in the third quarter at home games, a military hero is recognized with a cruise for two on Norwegian Getaway, courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line. Norwegian Cruise Line is also being promoted on the stadium television network for all events at Sun Life Stadium year-round, along with permanent signage under the scoreboard. The partnership also extends onboard Norwegian Getaway, as the ship’s library will house Miami Dolphins memorabilia highlighting the team’s rich history.

To celebrate the announcement of the Dolphins Cheerleaders as Godmothers of Norwegian Getaway, the cheerleaders will make an appearance at Norwegian Cruise Line’s photo area on the Grand Plaza (across from the Dolphins store at Gate G) at Sun Life Stadium on Sunday, October 20 from 11 am to 12 pm. The Cheerleaders will be available for photos and will be giving fans commemorative posters.

As part of the Titans celebrating their 15th anniversary season, more than 60 alumni from the past 14 years of Titans Cheerleading performed during a special halftime show, “15 Years of Cheers,” at the team’s regular-season opener last month vs. San Diego.

Included in the group were 10 members from the inaugural 1999 season, eight Pro Bowl cheerleaders and 10 second generation children — the future of Titans Cheerleading — dancing with their parents.

Shauna, a member of the squad from 2006-09, traveled the farthest, flying in from Los Angeles to be with many of her former teammates. Lindsay, S., a 2009 Pro Bowl cheerleader, danced after giving birth to her second child just three weeks prior. And Molly (2011-12 seasons) participated while nine months pregnant, only two weeks away from her due date.

Director of Cheerleading Stacie Kinder conducted three practices for the alumni, including the final one the night before that lasted until 10:30 p.m.

“I am so proud of our alumni that came out in great support of our 15-year anniversary,” Kinder said. “They did an outstanding job and it was an amazing celebration for our fans.”

The show concluded by honoring 40 members of the Titans Founders Club, which includes original season ticket holders from 1999.
