Earlier in the year, Maria Cartagena, a five-year veteran of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cheerleaders came to visit the squad and shared that she had been diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa. RP is characterized as progressive peripheral vision loss and night vision difficulties that can eventually lead to central vision loss.

The cheerleaders were immediately compelled to act. We have shown our support by attending fundraisers, donating to research and support organizations, and most importantly have just been there to show Maria how much she is loved and supported by our organization.

Our efforts to support Maria were most visible Saturday, October 27, at Al Lopez Park, where current and former cheerleaders took part in the Tampa Bay Vision Walk with over 350 other participants. Our team was one of the largest, with over 50 people coming out to show their support for Maria and others affected by vision disabilities. Our team wore matching purple “Marching for the Cure” shirts displaying her initials to show our commitment to Maria and her battle. Together we were able to raise over $8,600.

To date, the Vision Walk has raised over $52,700–surpassing the $50,000 goal prior to event. Maria’s diligent fundraising work was recognized at the event when she earned the All Star Vision Walk Award for individually raising over $1,000 for the cause!

The walk was so motivating and special to me because it showed the love that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cheerleaders have for one another. Regardless of whether we individually cheered with Maria or not, we all consider her a part of our family–the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cheerleaders family. We all want Maria to know she is not alone in this battle.

It is my hope that with growing knowledge of the disease and continued support from the community we can help bring The Foundation for Fighting Blindness closer to finding a cure for all of the people affected by this disease.

Former Miami Dolphins Cheerleader Shannon Ford is now preparing to ride a bike for more than 30 miles on Sunday Nov. 4th in the third annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge (DCC). By donating 100% of proceeds raised by the DCC riders to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, this ride was created to tackle cancer. At the recent Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders Alumni reunion, Shannon was inspired by the spirit and courage of Christina Linett Cousineau, an original 1978 Miami Dolphin Starbrite who is living with cancer. Shannon will be riding in honor of Christina and her battle with the disease. Christina and her family will be at the finish line cheering Shannon on her final strides.

“I had the privilege of meeting Christina at the recent Miami Dolphins Cheerleader Alumni Reunion, she is such an inspiration and I will be riding the Dolphins Cycling Challenge in her honor.”

Kiley, a rookie Atlanta Falcon Cheerleader and former Georgia Force Cheerleader, writes:

“I’m going BALD for the day in honor of many friends who have lost their hair to cancer. I will be raising funds to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. All of my teammates have even agreed on their own to wear the bald caps for tonight’s practice as we surprise one of the girls I’m honoring through my fundraiser!”

Falcons cheerleader Shauna K. has been selected as one of the 50 most beautiful people in Atlanta by Jezebel Magazine.

This year has been a whirlwind for veteran Atlanta Falcons Cheerleader Shauna K. Earlier this year, she was named the cover girl for the 2012-13 Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders Swimsuit Calendar, which was shot in Jamaica in May.

In the coming days, she prepares for another honor as Jezebel Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful Atlantans of 2012 issue hits newsstands and the Web. Shauna has been put in the elite company of 49 others chosen by Jezebel for the year.

“It’s definitely flattering. It’s been interesting. It’s a lot of things happening all at once and it’s exciting,” Shauna said. “I think it’s great for the organization. I think it just adds to all of the excitement that’s been going on with our team and brings a little bit more attention and praise for the (cheerleading) program.”

Because of the recognition as one of Atlanta’s most beautiful, Shauna has received another opportunity with Jezebel’s sister magazine called Men’s Book, which will also hit newsstands the first week of November.

The magazine usually features actresses and celebrities, but Shauna said because of the success the Falcons have had on the field, the publication decided to make her their feature girl for November.

Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders aren’t new to the Jezebel Magazine 50 Most Beautiful list. Former cheerleader Brandy Kirschner and current cheerleader Natalie D. made the list last year. Former cheerleader Nikky Williams is also on the 2012 list.
