Ultimate Cheerleaders

Cincinnati Ben-Gals Alumni performed on the field this past Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium. But the night before, they held their reunion party. And Pro Bowl Dan was there and sent us a few photos.

Even though the Jets Flight Crew is relatively new to the NFL in comparison to other cheerleading squads, they are quickly racking up “traditions” in the NYC area! They recently appeared at the New Meadowlands Stadium to celebrate – once again – the 2010 Big Brothers Big Sisters Gridiron Games.

The Gridiron Games is an annual fall event for the BBBS of NYC. Here, big brothers and big sisters of the NYC metropolitan area – including their “Littles” – come to play football on a real NFL football stadium. For some of the “Littles,” this the first time they have ever left their usual urban surroundings. For many, they have never even visited a professional sports stadium – let alone have an opportunity to actually play on the field! Activities for the children included participating in various football tournaments and drills, playing at the “Jets Fest” (a remote play area set-up by the Jets personnel), touring the NFL players’ locker room, and meeting former NFL players AND the Jets Cheerleaders!

The Jets Flight Crew got things started by forming a tunnel for all the Bigs and Littles as they entered the new stadium. Soon after, they proceeded with the morning warm-up on the field – leading stretches for all the Bigs, Littles, referee participants, and staff. After the national anthem, Flight Crew cheerleaders taught sideline routines in the end zone. The addition of the Flight Crew to the games filled a void for Littles who were girls that did not want to play football. According to Gridiron Games chairman, James Rapp, “The cheerleaders have been such a great addition to the games since their first appearance 2 years ago. Having them here allows everyone to participate in the day! Everyone is always excited when they come. They have easily become part of this event.” Because this was their third appearance, many little girls anticipated their arrival and lined up to meet and be taught by the cheerleaders.

After the all the activities and lunch, all the participants heard motivational speeches from former New York Giants player Billy Taylor and Stephen Baker, former San Diego Chargers player Kurt Smith, and Jack Brewer, who played for teams such as the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants. The Flight Crew then came out to perform an energetic hip-hop routine for the crowd. Afterwards, they invited all the little girls that were taught sidelines to come and perform. Obviously, many of these little girls are future cheerleaders with their fabulous smiles and great moves! The day ended with a performance from a kids rock band.

The second half of the afternoon is where the real fundraising began. Lawyers from various corporate firms compete in a Gridiron lawyer tournament – as well as bid on silent auction items. This portion helps raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the area charity annually. But, it’s everyone’s participation – such as the volunteers, the players, and the cheerleaders – that truly make this event a success!

Last Sunday I left a chilly and overcast Philadelphia for warm and sunny (sometimes too sunny!) Tampa, and a chance to photograph the always amazing Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cheerleaders.

Catherine also arranged a group shot of the squad. My first attempt was in the tunnel. 🙁

Indy’s sideline star looks back on Week 10, ahead to the Manning-Brady showdown, and makes an early Super Bowl prediction. Also, further evidence that women love Brett Favre.
For once, Peyton Manning didn’t steal the show. Unlike most Colts victories — especially against the Bengals, against whom he’s now 7-and-0 — the man who would be MVP again gave way to the Indianapolis defense. Five turnovers and a pick-six later, he was all alone in first place because of it. And because of the cheerleaders, too. They got Lucas Oil Stadium rumbling as the D made two critical stops in the final three minutes. All of which had Indy-area native Kimberly rumbling about the postseason. “We’ll just see when January comes.” Or, you know, next Sunday against the Pats….

ESQUIRE: When the Bengals recovered that onside kick with 2:33 left, were you sweating it?

KIMBERLY: I wasn’t worried, because I knew the defense would step up. I’m very proud of them and the fans, because they’re so loud and into the game. When it’s like that, we do fewer routines and more jumping up and down and waving our poms. We also have signs now that say GET LOUD and MAKE NOISE because people way at the top of the stadium can’t really see what we’re doing.

ESQ: Undrafted rookie Javarris James scored your only offensive touchdown, and despite loads of injuries, Indy keeps winning with spare parts. Is there some secret formula that makes any player who puts on a Colts jersey into a stud?

KIM: I don’t know about that, but the guys work hard no matter whether they’re first-, second-, or third-string. They all practice like they’re first-string. And Peyton Manning is just such a great leader that no matter who he’s throwing to, they want to step up.

ESQ: Speaking of Manning: great quarterback or greatest quarterback?

KIM: Definitely greatest quarterback. He’s done so much in his career. So many MVPs. And I’m not biased at all. It’s just the truth.

ESQ: Some people knock him down a peg because Tom Brady’s won more titles. Your thoughts?

KIM: Super Bowls definitely matter. You have to get the job done. But Peyton takes players who aren’t starters and makes them look amazing. Brady’s great, but I don’t think he’d be able to do the same things. Peyton is less dependent on the people around him.

ESQ: If you weren’t within spitting distance of a future Hall-of-Famer all season, which QB would you most want to watch this year?

KIM: Michael Vick. He’s definitely surprised me this season. I knew he was good, but I didn’t think he was that good. I like Brett Favre. People give him so much trouble, but I think he’s great. He keeps things interesting. I think he can be in the league for as long as he wants to be.

ESQ: The Colts reached the Super Bowl in your rookie season earlier this year. So do you just expect that to happen every season now?

KIM: Definitely. I guess we just got spoiled, all the rookies. When they lost the first game to Houston this year, I was like, What’s going on? Last year, I was just so used to winning. Older cheerleaders told us to cherish the moment. Quite a few girls had been to the last one, and they said, “You never know when you’ll get to cheer at a Super Bowl again.” Now I’d like to cheer when they win it and get a shiny ring.

ESQ: You get a ring?

KIM: Oh, yeah. My AFC Championship ring from last year is my pride and joy.

ESQ: In the past ten years, only two teams that lost the Super Bowl have made the playoffs the next year. Think Indy can buck that trend?

KIM: I think so. We’ve had some struggles, but right now we’re number one in our division. I have confidence in the team to make it back to playoffs and back to Super Bowl.

ESQ: Which AFC team scares you most?

KIM: The Patriots will be a little hard next week. They’ve been doing well this year. They might be one to reckon with. And I like the Jets. They’re my second-favorite team.

ESQ: You have a Yorkshire terrier named Squirt. What’s the best dog for men?

KIM: I really like pit bulls. They’re not mean if you raise them the right the way. And a guy definitely looks cool with a pit bull.

Our friend Phil reports:

Tuesday is generally a day off for NFL players but Ralph Wilson Stadium was a busy place this week with 2 big events going on. First up was a blood drive by the American Red Cross and donors got to do more than give blood as they were treated to tours of the stadium and locker rooms as well meeting Bills players and members of the Buffalo Jills.

In the evening, the Buffalo Jills squad hosted an Open Practice in which they showed the next generation of cheerleaders how to do a few NFL-style cheers before putting on a demonstration of a pair of gameday performances for the attendees of the event. They even had a number of special guests as the Alden High Cheerleaders were in attendance and performed one of their own routines for everyone. In addition, a pair of Jills alumni were on hand as well, including a member of the original Buffalo Jills squad as well as Eileen’s original Jills captain Dina.

Bikini-clad cheerleaders have been blamed by the Yemen beach volleyball team for their defeat during the Asian Games.

From The Telegraph

Organisers of the games in China have hired four cheerleader squads, each made up of eight girls, to entertain fans during breaks in the volleyball action, according to the Tianfu Morning News.

But Yemen beach volleyballer Adeeb Mahfoudh has now accused the squads of being distracting, and partly to blame for their defeat to Indonesia.

yemen

“They had an effect on how we played,” he said. “I think they had something to do with our losing the match.

Besides cheering, the girls also perform routines that include traditional Chinese elements including martial arts and fan dancing.

“These girls are very beautiful. With them here, more people will pay attention to beach volleyball,” Mr Mahfoudh added.

“If I can, I hope to watch them perform at the next match.”
