As a veteran New England Patriots Cheerleader, Alexandria has the squad’s calendar shoot routine down. Not only has she appeared in the pages of the calendar for the last three years, but she’s also landed on the coveted cover twice, including as a rookie in 2012. Now, as she kicks off her final season as a Patriots Cheerleader, the team captain shares her thoughts on this year’s shoot in Punta Cana and all the work that goes into making it happen.

The planning for this trip never gets easier. Every year it’s the same – it’s a lot of preparation. As soon as you get here you can kind of relax but leading up to it, it’s all about the fitness training and picking the perfect bathing suit. Plus, every year you want a different look. That’s the tough part about this. It’s my fourth year, so I was thinking, “What am I going to do this year to make it different from every other year?”

Picking the swimsuits is the best part, though. It’s so fun. We have our annual swimsuit try-on and [Cheerleaders Director] Tracy tells us to bring our favorite suits and we sort of just have this big bikini party. You have to bring ones you like and hope you get put in those, but Tracy has a good eye for it. She knows what looks great because she’s been doing this for so long, but it’s not always the one that you try on in the cheer building [in Foxborough]. There’s like a bajillion suits that she takes pictures of and then when you get here you could be in something completely different or, you know, you could have like a leaf for your suit [laughs]. There’s a lot of preparation but you have to understand that it can all change.

I honestly don’t know how many suits I brought with me on this trip. It’s a sickness [laughs]. Once you’re on this team, you just can’t stop with the bathing suits. You can never have too many.

I got the swimsuit for my photo shoot in purple and a peach color too. Tracy thought she was really going to love the suit in peach but then she ended up putting me in the purple one. There’s so much that goes into it; it has to do with the location, time of day, how many girls are wearing that color bathing suit so far.

The shoot went exactly how I wanted it to. It’s so sad that my last swimsuit calendar shoot is over but I wouldn’t have done it differently. I remember back to my rookie year, I had never done anything like this before. I had never modeled, never mind swimsuits. I remember crying before my first photo shoot because I was so nervous, but it just felt great yesterday. It’s crazy how far I’ve come and how close I am with our photographer Justin and how well we work together. Tracy was there but she wasn’t really directing me because I’m so comfortable at this point. It was bittersweet, though. It feels like I’ve accomplished what I wanted to accomplish, but I’m definitely going to miss this.

The calendar trip is one of my favorite parts of being on the team. You get to bond with everybody, but once the trip is over you realize that it’s really just the beginning; the season’s really going to start after this. And the best part of the year, honestly, is the first game. There’s just nothing like a game at Gillette Stadium. That’s what I’m really going to miss the most about being a Patriots Cheerleader.

In school she had high hopes of becoming an international cheerleader — now an official cheerleader for the NFL’s San Diego Chargers, Angela Minucos has realised her dream.

After working up the courage to audition for the Chargers’ cheerleading squad, Ms Minucos beat more than 400 other women to become a Charger Girl.

“When you know there are going to be that many talented women competing for the same spot, it is very intimidating,” Ms Minucos said. “But I am so fortunate to have such an amazing support system.”

The former Rosebank College student was a cheerleader for the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League for two years before getting a spot in the popular San Diego squad.

“That was when my passion for cheerleading really exploded. I saw a whole other professional side to cheerleading,” she said.

“ When I returned to Australia I knew I wasn’t ready to finish and instantly began making plans to go to America and take the next step into the biggest league, the NFL.”

She said the auditions were extremely tough with hundreds of girls vying for a spot with the San Diego Chargers,

“The first interview is a one on one with the Charger a Girls Team Director Lisa Simmons,” she said.

“From there a panel interview with several Chargers executives and personnel, where by you can be asked all sorts of questions, from your personal experience to statistics and information about the Chargers organisation and its football players.”

“For me, the best part of being a cheerleader is giving back to the community.

“Taking part in anti bullying programs, healthy lifestyle initiatives for kids and raising money for important charities is a huge reason why I do what I do.”

Ms Minucos is currently living in San Diego and can’t wait to kick off the season.

“ We started our preseason training immediately following the auditions and it has been non stop since. I can’t wait for the season to begin and having all of this hard work and preparation pay off on the field when I get to dance in front of 70,000 Chargers fans!”

The Patriots Cheerleaders are used to putting on their uniforms to perform on Sundays, but on their annual swimsuit calendar trip, they entertained crowds at the start of the weekend instead.

On Friday night, the squad performed to a full ballroom of guests both young and old at Paradisus Palma Real, the resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, where they are shooting their 2016 calendar. With Cheerleaders Director Tracy Sormanti serving as the night’s MC, the women put on an hour-long variety show featuring some of their high-energy dance routines.

They also got the crowd involved in the show, starting with the game, “Guess Which Cheerleader.” Jason and Marcela, a couple who had just gotten married at the resort, went head to head, trying to match certain props with the cheerleader they represented: Who was valedictorian? Who is a baker? Who has a black belt?

In the end, it was declared a tie, and both Jason and Marcela walked away with prizes; he got a 2015 swimsuit calendar and she went home with one of those iconic photos of Gronk with kittens.

Still, “Guess Which Cheerleader” wasn’t the only part of the show with audience participation; the cheerleaders also found five guests to hop on stage and compete in football trivia. And after they tested their knowledge of the sport, the participants got quite a surprise; the cheer captains came out to give them a quick dance lesson before leading them in a performance to LMFAO’s “Sexy and I know It.”

“My favorite part of the show was seeing our trivia participants do the shimmy-shimmy-shake on stage,” said cheerleader Amanda. “I think we’re going to see a lot more of that at our events throughout the week because we have a really fun crowd here at the resort.”

Besides the surprise dance-off, another highlight of the show was theater-major-turned-pastry-chef LisaMarie’s rendition of “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.”

“Although I changed careers, I’m a performer at heart,” the veteran cheerleader explained after the show. “It’s really fun to continue my passion for singing on the calendar trip each year. It’s my third trip singing and, believe or not, I haven’t sung since last year’s trip – just in the shower and in the car – so this is my moment to grease the vocal chords and get them working again.”

At the conclusion of the show, the cheerleaders posed for photos and signed autographs for the crowd. They then had a private presentation with reps from Alex and Ani, as the women received special bracelet sets for the 2015 season, including a charm commemorating Super Bowl XLIX.
