Originally, I was going to stop in Baltimore on my way back from Charlotte on March 14th and cover the Baltimore Mariners Cheerleaders. But when I exited I-95 I was caught in a Sunday afternoon(!) traffic jam. It seems some major streets were closed for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. So, I never made it to 1st Mariners Arena that day, but two weeks later, I did manage to make it to a Mariners game.

Wow!

It had to happen some day.

The 4-time defending NBA Dance Bracket Champion Miami Heat Dancers got knocked off.

The Charlotte Lady Cats advanced to the finals defeating the Heat Dancers 59%-41%.

Meanwhile out West, the Suns Dancers triumphed over the Mavs Dancers to earn a spot in the finals.

The Atlanta Falcons are completely revamping their Cheerleader program — new look, new approach, bigger part of the game day experience!

The new look means searching for ladies who epitomize the “New South” — young, glamorous, hip, attractive, intelligent. Falcons Cheerleader Director Chato Waters talks about the campaign.

Tryouts are Sunday April 11th.

uflThe United Football League has announced that prominent Central Florida dance instructor and choreographer Billie O’Hara has been named to the dual role of UFL Cheer and Dance Development Director and Director of the Florida Tusker Cheerleaders.

In her new post, O’Hara will oversee the development of Dance/Cheer Teams for all United Football League teams in 2010, including the hiring of individual dance team directors, establishment of a league dance team procedure manual, uniform design, budgets and other administrative duties.

In addition, O’Hara will be directly responsible for the creation and development of the Florida Tusker Cheerleaders. In that capacity, O’Hara will handle all aspects of the Tusker Dance Team, including organizing and conducting auditions, final team selection, serving as team choreographer, and overseeing practice and game presentations.

“The hiring of Billie O’Hara is just another example of the UFL’s total commitment to bringing a quality entertainment experience to our football fans,” COO William Peterson said. “Billie’s experience as a performer, instructor and teacher made her the ideal candidate to not only direct the Florida Tuskers dance team, but to create an image and vision for all UFL dance teams.”

A former Orlando Magic Dancer, O’Hara has more than 20 years of experience in dance as a performer, instructor and director. A native of Jacksonville, Fla., O’Hara began her formal dance training in 1989. She attended several prestigious dance schools, including the Tremaine Dance Center in Hollywood, Calif. and Douglas Anderson School of the Performing Arts, where she was accepted into the All American College Program at Walt Disney World.

In addition to dancing for the Orlando Magic for four years, she also danced professionally for the Orlando Predators (Arena Football League). She served as a back-up dancer and choreographer for former Backstreet Boys member Phoenix Stone. O’Hara has served on the faculty of the Dance Conservatory of Orlando and Academy of Performing Arts.

“My vision is the creation of unique and individual dance squads for each UFL city but to build each team within consistent parameters,” O’Hara said. “Overall, each UFL dance/cheer team will be athletic, wholesome, and entertaining ambassadors for their teams. They also serve as role models within their cities through community involvement and charitable work. Our dancers will be an asset to both our teams and the communities they represent.”

O’Hara is married to former professional football player, actor and current Orlando Predators head coach Pat O’Hara. The couple resides in Orlando with sons Tyler and Trace.

York Mills resident Lauren returns to dance squad

By Brian Baker

It’s like winning back-to-back Grey Cups for Toronto Argonauts cheerleading hopeful Lauren L.

The Bayview and York Mills area resident was vying for one of 33 spots on the 2010 cheerleading squad.

Taking the stage at Cardinal Carter Academy of the Arts on March 20, the 21-year-old performed for judges Rudy Blair of 680 News, photographer Craig Boyko and cheerleading head coach Jorie Brown.

A returning member from the 2009 squad, Lauren was eager to rejoin the friends she made over the last gridiron season.

“All the girls are very friendly and really sweet,” she said. “It’s just nice atmosphere. I feel very comfortable.”

Staying steely in the face of competition, thanks to her training from TnT Dance Force and O.I.P. Dance Centre, she was far from jittery.

“For me I love the team and it’s just something I thoroughly enjoy,” she said. “To prepare, my friend and I got together and went over the routine several times today and came here and hoped for the best.”

MAKING THE CUT: Alexandra M. and Lauren L. take a break from dancing at the Toronto Argonauts cheerleading finals. Lauren made the team, however Alexandra’s number was not called.

Her fellow performer, midtown resident Alexandra M., was all about staying Zen during her final audition.

“For me it was more about calming myself down,” she said. “It wasn’t necessarily about remembering the routine it was more about centering myself.”

Even though there would be some ladies not making the team, Alexandra was appreciative of the chance to make some new friends.

“For me being a new auditioner I find it incredibly friendly. All the girls are very approachable,” she said. “I know it is a competition, but the vibe is not competitive.”

New Argos head coach Jim Barker offered that same team spirit as he spoke with the ladies before the roster was named.

He commended them for their on-field athletics.

“If they’re prepared they can go out and they’ll stay focused just like our players,” he told the audience, his focus on the hopefuls.
“We have some phenomenal athletes do their thing on the field and then in between we have these phenomenal athletes.”

During the concluding Blue Rose Ceremony, Lauren’s number was called — the George Brown business student’s hard work paying off after two weeks.

“I am definitely looking forward to the games, the promotions that we do as well, and the charity work,” she said. “It feels good to give back to the community and through the Argos it’s a great way to be a part of that.”
