Women Dance to Impress at Bucs Cheerleading Auditions

From BayNews9.com:

bucsaudsHundreds of Bay area of women are trying to join one of the NFL’s most elite cheerleading squads.

While hundreds will strut their stuff, only 34 dancers will be selected for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cheerleading squad.

Bucs Cheerleading manager Catherine Boyd says she’s looking for more than a pretty face.

So, what is she looking for?

“Just a really well-rounded, professional type of fit woman,” Boyd said.

The first day of tryouts was Monday. The women danced in pairs and only had ten seconds to impress the judges.

The song they dance to is a surprise. That way the judges can see if the girls have natural rhythm.

“It was really intimidating but it was faster and easier than I thought it was going to be,” said 19-year-old Taylor Mock.

This is the second time Mock has tried out. Last year, Mock made it to the final rounds and she’s going to keep trying.

“I had a great time and if I don’t make it this year, I’ll gladly come back next year,” Mock said.

The Bucs will conduct more try outs Tuesday and Wednesday. Final auditions will take place next month.

Bucs Begin Search for This Season’s Cheerleaders

Twenty seconds is all the time Faith Decker had to make a first impression. Decker was one of several women who auditioned for a spot on the 2010 Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleading squad.

Two at a time, the hopefuls shuffled through auditorium inside One Buc Place to face a panel of judges.

After a quick introduction, the fresh-faced candidates danced freestyle for only twenty seconds.

“You really get your one chance to prove yourself. You know, I think I did well,” Decker said.

There are six open call sessions for women to audition for an eventual cheerleading slot. Bucs Cheerleading Manager Catherine Boyd says roughly 70 women danced for her Monday. Boyd believes about 60 to 70, in all, will receive notice to move-on in the auditioning process.

“We’re looking at their natural movement, are they able to keep a beat,” Boyd noted in what she and the other judges are critiquing. “Maybe they’re not the most technical dancer, but something we’re maybe able to work with.”

Those who receive a callback will face another audition this Saturday. Instead of freestyle, the cheerleading hopefuls will learn a choreographed routine. For those who master the dance moves, they face another challenge. They will square off against veteran Bucs cheerleaders. The seasoned cheerleaders bypassed the open call round but will be vying for a spot on the 2010 squad starting this weekend. Final auditions will be held Thursday, April 1st. Team officials say up to 34 cheerleaders will be selected for the final squad.

Decker is not looking ahead to the weekend. She hopes her performance today will lead to a reward on Tuesday.

“I will be absolutely ecstatic. I cannot wait. I’m going to be on the computer all day, clicking refresh on the internet,” Decker said. “I will be so grateful for the opportunity to come back.”

There’s still a chance to tryout:

One Buccaneer Place, 3302 W. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Tampa FL 33607

Two call times each day
Tuesday, March 23 – 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday, March 24 – 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.

Will anyone ever be able to derail the Miami Heat Dancers?

What’s it take to become a Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleader?

Beauty, Fitness, Talent, Personality.

How about energy and stamina?

natalya

Dancers spent a long day on their feet on the Club Level of Lincoln Financial Field. And that’s why Natalya is sporting a can of Red Bull. (Perhaps I can convince them to sponsor the site.)

After 7 hours and 2 round of cuts, 328 hopefuls were narrowed down to 73 dancers, who will go on the semi-finals.

Of course, you would have already known that if you had subscribed to our twitter feed.

These numbers don’t included current members of the Eagles Cheerleaders hoping to return for 2010. (The rumored number of those attempting to continue cheering is 30.) Those ladies had a “bye” for Open Call and were quite busy as well today, teaching the routine, answering questions and escorting the dancers through the audition process.

It’s all going to culminate the Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders Finals Tuesday, April 20th at the Prince Theater in Center City.

Much more from Saturday’s Open Call coming this week, but first I owe a couple of groups of ladies from Charlotte (The Lady Cats and The Checkmates) some photos.

Amber Lancaster is a former Seattle Sea Gal

Amber Lancaster plays the cheerleading dream girl of a well-endowed geek on MTV’s first single-cam comedy, The Hard Times of RJ Berger. The show premiers June 6th with a huge push by MTV, as they sober up from their ten-year reality show bender. The comedy is based around RJ’s (Paul Iacono) huge appendage being unveiled during a school pep assembly, and how his popularity goes from zero to 60 quicker then Amber can do the splits. Lancaster has played a soap star diva, been part of the gang on Entourage, and, here, tells us about going to school with no clothes on.

Describe your role on Hard Times.
I play the role of Jenny Swanson. She’s the quintessential, all-American girl-next door that is also the girl of RJ’s dreams (both literally and figuratively).

It’s a funny role that requires good comedic timing.
The show is basically a series of awkward moments. My character is funny without knowing that she is funny, not because of the things she does, but because of how obsessed RJ is with her and she is completely oblivious.

Have there been any awkward moments on set?
My most awkward moment was a scene where RJ dreams that I come to school naked, with nothing but a backpack on. So I filmed the scene with literally nothing but a backpack and 50 extras, 4 cameras, 20 crew. You get the idea. It was very awkward.

What was is like playing a cheerleader?

It was fun!! Although, I didn’t get to wear the uniform as much as I would have liked.

What are your three favorite possessions.

My grandmother’s pearl necklace, old photo albums and music

Other then PAPERMAG.com what are your everyday websites?

Well I have a few, I am an absolute Google fanatic. I must Google at least five things a day. And I love facebook, gilt.com, and imdb.com

What is one of your favorite areas of LA and why?

I love living in Brentwood. It’s a bit removed from Hollywood, close to the ocean, and I can walk anywhere from my apartment, which, in my opinion, is priceless in LA!

bruins2As a Boston Bruins Ice Girl, Middleton resident Alexa Nicholls sees quite a bit of blood on the ice at the TD Garden during the occasional boisterous Bruins game.

This is one young woman who is not at all squeamish at the sight. After all, she sees quite a bit as a Patient Care Technician in the Surgical Unit at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. She is hoping to some day be a surgeon herself.

“I have a genuine passion for and interest in the field of surgery,” said Nicholls, a four-year member of the Ice Girls, a dance team of women who entertain fans during TV timeouts and intermissions. “I knew the moment I first stepped into the operating room that it was where I wanted to be the rest of my life. It’s a feeling that is hard to put into words, but I just know it’s for me.”

It all comes from the 21-year-old Nicholls’ willingness to be a helping hand in society. That also explains why she is running the Boston Marathon as a member of the Bruins Marathon Team, helping to raise money for the Boston Bruins Foundation.

“The Ice Girls do a ton of work with the Foundation,” said Nicholls. “The Boston Bruins Wives Carnival is one of our partner events, and we host a blood drive at the Garden every year, and we have events during or before games, like pajama drives or toy drives.”

Nicholls will also gladly run 26.2 miles for the charitable arm of the Bruins organization, representing the Ice Girls in that venture.

“I heard the Boston Bruins were going to have a marathon team last summer,” said Nicholls. “They started accepting applications for a spot on the team back in October and I immediately applied. There are 16 of us on the marathon team.”

Nicholls is only briefly into her career as a marathon runner, having run her first half-marathon last October.

“I did really well, but the Boston Marathon will be my first marathon,” said Nicholls. “I started training for the Boston Marathon in December and my training has dramatically intensified since the New Year.”

During Nicholls’ days as a Boston University Pre-Medicine/Health Sciences student, she remembers very well seeing thousands of runners living their dreams as they ran past screaming Marathon fans towards the end of the course at Copley Square.

“I think every college student in Boston can relate … there is nothing quite like Marathon Monday,” said Nicholls. “Running the Boston Marathon has always been a dream/goal of mine. Being a Bostonian, I have grown up around the energy and excitement that makes the Boston Marathon such a historic event.

“I have always admired the strength and commitment it takes individuals to run 26.2 miles,” she added.

bruins1

Always a fan

Nicholls quickly admits she’s never been a hockey player herself, but she has always been a huge fan of the game and the Bruins, especially.

“Growing up, my mother [Gail] always brought me to games, and I also cheered at Masco for hockey games for all four of my years,” she added. Some of her years as a Masco cheerleader coincided with her brother Jay Nicholls’ time with the Chieftains boys hockey team.

Also, her father John still plays recreational hockey.

“After cheering at Masco, I wanted to continue to be involved with that sort of team, so I gave it a shot with the Ice Girls,” she said. “I did that each year during college, before I graduated early.”

Alexa graduated from Boston University in December, and will be applying to Physician Assistant/Masters programs in April.

“As part of that application, candidates must have a minimum of 2,000 hours of direct patient care and experience, and a Pre-Med Bachelor’s Degree,” said Alexa. “When I am not watching and taking part in Bruins home games, you will most likely find me in my scrubs at the hospital. I am a very hard worker, and genuinely love the hospital environment. I love the feeling I get knowing that I have made a difference in a patient’s life.”

Unfortunately, patients who enter the surgery room are sometimes children, and the youngest members of our population are the most regular beneficiaries of the Boston Bruins Foundation. The Foundation helps children in the realms of health, education, athletics and community outreach.

“I am so honored to be a part of the Boston Bruins Marathon Team, and I know that throughout this journey I am positively impacting the lives of children throughout New England from all of the generous donations made to the Boston Bruins Foundation,” Alexa added.
