We recommend attending The Mock Audition, Beauty, and Fitness Workshop on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in addition to the Dance Prep Workshop, especially if it is your first time auditioning, to be prepared for the Open Call Audition.

At the Mock Audition, Beauty, and Fitness Workshop you will:

lady-cats-logo-with-tagline

So you think you can dance? The Austin Turfcats announced today that the Lady Cats cheerleaders will be holding an audition on March 3 to fill two extra spots on the 2010 team.

The Lady Cats perform a variety of jazz and hip-hop dance routines throughout the course of the season at each of the Turfcats’ home games, in addition to serving as Turfcats ambassadors in the community.

Those interested in trying out must be 18 or older by March 3 and be able to attend all home games and regular practices (held Monday and Wednesday evenings). These appearances range from community and charity events to performing in and around the Austin metro area and Central Texas.

The audition will be held at Gold’s Gym at Tech Ridge, located at 235 Canyon Ridge Drive in Austin, near IH-35 and Parmer Lane. Registration begins at 6:45pm. A routine will be taught beginning at 7:00, then participants will be judged on their performance of that routine from memory followed by a short interview.

ORLANDO- The 2010 Orlando Predator Prowler Dance Team was chosen Saturday night in front of an explosive crowd of 350 fans at Antigua Night Club on Church Street in Downtown Orlando. Despite other events going on Saturday including a Downtown Blues Festival and an event at the Amway Arena, Predators fans proved once again why they are the best fans in Central Florida coming out in large numbers to greet the new team and provide encouragement to the girls as they competed for a spot on this year’s team. Of the 25 girls who made it through the first round and interview process 16 were chosen to represent the Prowlers in 2010. Dance Director Billie O’Hara said she was pleased with the results but it was hard to let some of the girls go. “Some really great girls were cut by the judges tonight and that really is the hardest part. I wish I could keep them all, but unfortunately there are only sixteen spots and there has to be winners and losers. I hope the girls that did not make it will keep practicing and come tryout for the team again next year.”

The event was a complete success drawing the largest crowd to date for such an event. The 350 fans that attended provided a great deal of excitement and energy for the performances and showed that Orlando is still crazy for anything Predators. The girls chosen will perform at all home games during the 2010 Season and represent the Orlando Predators in the community as well.

A Special Thanks goes out to Doug Taylor of Church Street Entertainment who made the event such a great success and his staff, particularly Abe Taylor, Eric Isolica and Craig Rutherford. Also we would like to thank Cory Frost and DJ Stokes for their long hours in putting together the video packages that went into making this event such a great success.

At Davidson Day, she is known as “Madame Geiger” and is one of two French teachers for the school. In two weeks, though, Sheena Geiger of Davidson will set aside her classroom work to fly to Japan and join a team of performers marking the 40th anniversary of the Osaka World Expo.

She will be part of a group organized by World Campus International, a Tokyo-based nonprofit that encourages intercultural exchanges.

“Learning about other cultures, that’s my passion,” Sheena said. “I love learning languages and meeting people from around the world and traveling.”

Raised in Nova Scotia, Sheena said she grew up speaking Gaelic and step-dancing in the Scottish style. Her booth at the 40th Anniversary World Expo event will offer information about Canada. She will be able to both sing and dance at the closing ceremonies.

Performing in front of large crowds is nothing new to Sheena. Before coming to Davidson Day, she represented Canada in the professional performing group, Up With People, and spent last summer in Denver helping them choreograph their current world tour show. Now that she is based in Davidson, Sheena continues her interest in dance as a CheckMate, a cheerleader for the Charlotte Checkers.

sheena1
Sheena Geiger is also a cheerleader for the Charlotte Checkers. Here’s a photo of her singing the Canadian National Anthem at a recent Checkers game.

The Osaka events will take place from March 10-16, and the trip will cost $2,500. Sheena is seeking sponsorships, and hopes to offer presentations about Japan when she returns. You can contact her by email (sgeiger@davidsonday.org).

Besides the thrill of the performances, which will have to be pulled together quickly according to a rigorous schedule, the World Campus International group will be offered opportunities to learn more about their host country.

“They’ll be matching us with families and giving us language lessons,” she said. “I’m so excited!”

The Herald News

patsaudsThe path to earning a spot on the Patriots’ sideline next season began Saturday morning at the Dana-Farber Field House at Gillette Stadium.

No, Bill Belichick wasn’t holding an open tryout. Instead, the New England Patriots Cheerleaders held their annual auditions, the first step in building their 28-person squad for 2010 from a pool of more than 300 bright-eyed hopefuls that kicked, twirled and high-stepped in front of the judges.
Tiffany Melendez, 22, of Fall River, was one of the participants.

“My mom found this audition and told me about it Thursday,” she said. “My mom printed out the form and told me, ‘You’re going.’

“I have a little bit of a dancing background. I started dancing when I was 17 and have been doing it ever since. It’s something that I love to do.”

Candidates performed various dance routines in front of the panel and were judged on dance ability, showmanship, overall appearance and level of physical fitness.

After Saturday’s audition, the field will be narrowed to approximately 30 semi-finalists, who will be invited back for final auditions on Saturday, March 6.

“I hope that I can make it pretty far, if not make the team,” Melendez said before heading in front of the judges. “If I don’t make it, at least it’s a great experience and I will get to figure out what the audition process is like since this is my first time. We’ll see how it goes.”
