Since the Philadelphia Eagles already clinched a playoff berth, take your eyes off today’s home game against the Denver Broncos for a couple of minutes and check out Ivelisse Rivera, a 21-year-old Hammonton resident who is an Eagles cheerleader.

Rivera, a student at Technical Institute of Camden County studying to be a dental assistant, is in her second year of dancing and cheering for the Eagles, joining another local, Hamilton Township’s Tiffany Monroe.

After taking dance in high school and cheering for the Hammonton High School basketball team, Rivera decided to audition for the Eagles three years ago. She did not make it the first time but used the experience to figure out what the team managers were looking for. The second tryout was the charm.

Since becoming an Eagles Cheerleader, Rivera has enjoyed some nice benefits, including weeklong trips to Aruba and the Dominican Republic to shoot the Eagles Cheerleaders Calendar. Rivera is Miss November 2010.

“When I found out I made the team, I cried,” said Rivera, who hopes to remain an Eagles cheerleader for a few more years. “The job definitely has some great perks. I have the best seat in the house for the games, and I get my hair and makeup done every week by professionals. When I have kids, I really look forward to telling them about the whole experience and if they have passion to do something, they should pursue it like I did.”

amberlancastreAmber Lancaster giggles when she explains The Hard Times of R. J. Berger, the MTV comedy that will likely pole–vault the 29–year–old Tacoma native from well–known pinup girl to well–known actor. Set in an Ohio high school, the show centers on nerdly R. J. Berger, a sophomore who compensates for his broomstick physique and lack of social skills with, well, what’s in his trousers. “He has a gift, you might call it, which sort of throws him into the spotlight,” explains Lancaster, who plays Jenny Swanson, R. J.’s study buddy and object of desire.

Billed as Superbad meets The Wonder Years—essentially, raunchy coming–of–age comedy with a heart of gold—Hard Times is the latest stop on a scantily clad odyssey that started in 1999, when Lancaster was a senior at Tacoma’s Franklin Pierce High School, the same year she made the Sea Gals squad. After five years of shaking pom–poms for the Seahawks, Lancaster loaded up the U–Haul and rolled down to LA, where she quickly landed a gig with Makita power tools. As Miss Makita 2005, she appeared on the company’s calendar and scooted around the country to help shill drill guns in agrarian burgs like tiny Carroll, Iowa, where she was the talk of the town. “I was on the cover of the newspaper. It was hilarious.”

Other modeling stints followed: bejeweled trophy presenter on the Primetime Emmy Awards and Showcase Showdown siren on The Price Is Right, on which she still appears and frequently jaws about Seattle sports with host and Sounders FC co–owner Drew Carey. Then she got a callback early last year from a TV audition. “I was a little scared about it. I mean, it’s pretty edgy,” she says of the Hard Times pilot script. “But at the same time it was really funny.”

A leitmotif of the show, in production now and scheduled to debut this spring, is R. J.’s constant fantasizing about Lancaster’s character. “In one episode he’s at his locker, and I’m like, ‘Hey R. J., I came to school naked today.’ And he looks at me and it’s me in just a backpack. And then he’s like ‘What?’ And I’m like, ‘Hey R. J. I said, Is it cool if I can’t make it today?’ And then I’m clothed.”

Congratulations to Randy from Easton, MD, who correctly identified 1984 SF 49ers Gold Rush member Terri Hatcher as the only Professional Cheerleader (as far as we know) who appeared on Star Trek.

I do know Sasha is scouring the Internet for an actual photo of Terri in her Gold Rush uniform. Still no luck.

A former Hudson High School Raidaire will be a member of the dance team that entertains crowds at home matches of the Minnesota Swarm for the 2010 season.

Dancing professionally has been a longtime dream of Beth Hoaglund, a 2004 graduate of Hudson High and the daughter of two Hudson schoolteachers.

“I’m very excited for the season to get under way,” Hoaglund said in a phone call before Christmas.

The Minnesota Swarm is a professional lacrosse team that plays its home matches at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Hoaglund was one of 10 women selected for the Performance Team from a field of 48 candidates during tryouts last October.

“It was a talented field, so I feel really blessed to have made it,” Hoaglund said.

The Minnesota Swarm Performance Team rookies are featured for the month of November on the team’s 2010 calendar. Beth is standing to the right.

The Performance Team’s coach, Tami Krause, also coaches the Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders.

Hoaglund has been dancing ever since her parents, Gayle and Bob Hoaglund of North Hudson, began taking her to jazz, tap and ballet lessons when she was three years old.

She continued with dancing lessons throughout her elementary school years and made the Raidaires as a sophomore, the first year she was eligible to try out for the high school dance team.

She was selected for the UW-Eau Claire dance team as a freshman and performed with the team throughout her college years. She was a team captain her junior and senior years.

The UW-Eau Claire team attended the national university dance team competitions in Orlando, Fla., each year. In Hoaglund’s senior year, the Blugolds placed third in their division in one of the dance categories.

Hoaglund graduated from UW-Eau Claire in December 2008.

She majored in social work and now is a social worker at a long-term care facility in Eden Prairie, Minn., where she also resides.

She greatly enjoyed dancing with both the Raidaires and the UW-Eau Claire team and tried out for the Swarm Performance Team because she wanted to continue dancing.

She said she’s having a lot of fun being part of the Performance Team. She likes the other dancers and the motivation to stay physically fit.

The Swarm’s first match of the season is Jan. 15 against the Calgary Roughnecks. The team has eight home matches in a season that runs through the end of April.

You can learn all about the lacrosse team and its dance team at www.mnswarm.com.

Hoaglund’s mother, Gayle, is a seventh-grade social studies teacher at Hudson Middle School. Her father, Bob, is recently retired from teaching fifth-graders at North Hudson Elementary School.

Barely able to make her way up the sidewalk into the entrance of the STAR Family shelter, Miss Florida USA was surrounded by elementary school girls touching her beaded white and black bracelet and long necklace.

Once inside the homeless shelter off North and Segrave streets, Megan Clementi slipped on her sash and crown and was ready to hand out presents to close to 50 children.

Clementi, 26, a recent graduate of the University of Central Florida, joined Daytona Beach Fire Department officials and volunteers from God’s Willing Workers as children filled a room in the shelter, each picking out a couple of toys and a stuffed animal.

“It’s so much fun. I feel like Santa Claus,” said Clementi, after picking out a doll for Jasmine Coleman, 2.

Lisa Marie Kieffer said the toys made her two children’s Christmas come true. Her 11-year old daughter, Lily Gutman, spent a lot of time in the room trying to pick out the right two toys. She finally settled on a doll and a small stuffed animal dog. They’ve lived at the shelter for two months after coming here from Sarasota. Kieffer is planning to start classes at a truck driving school in February.

“God bless everybody who came here and donated,” Kieffer said. “It’s good for the children to feel that people care.”

Toys were donated from many sources, including “Our” Children First and the Fire Department, which stepped up and got extra toys from Port Orange Fire Rescue and the Daytona Beach Police Department.

Event organizer Verlinda Johnson, 61, founder and director of God’s Willing Workers, who gave out toys last year at the shelter, was thrilled that other organizations helped, as well as some area stores.

“My Christmas is to put a smile on the face of a child, especially those who are homeless,” Johnson said. “I want them to see real love today.”

megan2Clementi was named Miss Florida USA 2010 in July and will compete in Miss USA in April. She said her platform is centered around children. The Orlando resident heard about the homeless shelter from a friend in the area and wanted to “give some amazing kids some presents.”

She also volunteered to feed the homeless on Thanksgiving Day with the Salvation Army in Daytona Beach. She hopes to raise awareness for philanthropic organizations and encourage volunteerism.

The former Orlando Magic Dancer of five years and captain for three is still involved in helping to emcee the home games. After being at the shelter, she was headed to the game Wednesday night against the Houston Rockets.

The children also met Tia McDonald, 16, of Edgewater, who has won numerous titles including Miss Florida Junior National Teenager and Miss Space Coast Teen USA. McDonald went to the shelter last year to give the children toys and organized an Easter Egg hunt.

McDonald said she’s been through hard times, losing her house to a fire when she was little and being raised by a single mom, and she thinks “it’s important to help those in need.”

Some of the girls were fascinated by their crowns and said they can dance and sing and want to be in a pageant one day.

“I love watching pageants,” said Jelea Singleton, 11, who recently organized a talent show at the shelter. “I want to be in one — any one that I can win at.”
