rampageiceThe Rampage are searching the San Antonio area and surrounding community for talented, enthusiastic young women to compile their 2009-10 Ice Girls squad. Auditions for the team will be held on Sunday, August 30 at Lifetime Fitness (located at 281 just north of 1604). Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. and tryouts will begin promptly at 11 a.m.

All candidates will learn a one minute dance combination that they will perform in small groups in front of a panel of judges. Each candidate will be interviewed by Spurs Sports and Entertainment marketing representatives to determine the best candidates that will represent the organization’s core values.

“We are excited about the talent the dancers bring to their auditions. But, our selection process goes deeper than talent,” said Ice Girls Choreographer Raquel Garcia. “We interview every candidate to ensure we find the perfect young women for the job. We want talented ladies who can engage and entertain fans at Rampage games, but also ladies who will uphold our company values and represent our organization well within the San Antonio community.”

Interested candidates can apply by logging on to sarampage.com. There is a $10 fee for each application.

The newly selected team will make their Rampage debut on October 2 when the team begins their eighth AHL season at the AT&T Center.

On August 14th Jacksonville Axe Maidens, DeeDee & Michele had the opportunity to make an television appearance on the local news with members of the Axemen Rugby League to promote their upcoming Player/Cheerleader Auction.

Both ladies share their experience below….

By Axe Maiden, DeeDee

axefirstcoastnewsWhat little girl doesn’t grow up dreaming of being a television star, surrounded by handsome guys and bathed in the spotlight as the world watches, hanging on your every word? Well, that isn’t quite what happened during my recent appearance on First Coast News, ABC25, but it sure felt pretty darn close when my fellow Axe Maiden, Michele, and I joined members of the undefeated Jacksonville Axemen Rugby Team to promote the upcoming Axemen/Axe Maidens Auction being held the following night. When our Director, Darlene, asked me, as one of the Veteran Axe Maidens, and Michele, as one of the Rookies, to represent our squad, we both felt truly honored. It was high time the First Coast heard a little more about this hidden jewel of a sports team that was this close to bringing a National Championship back to Jacksonville and it was up to Michele and me to help deliver the message!

Although the weather outside was a dreary steady drizzle, you wouldn’t have known it upon walking into the WJXX studios because the Axemen, lead by their fearless leader, Spinner, were in rare form, with commentary that kept our host, First Coast News Anchor Patty Crosby, in stitches from start to finish. While we waited for our time to go on, various news personalities walked by including Anchorwoman Donna Deegan (wasn’t I just watching her on TV before I left my house?), “On Your Side” Reporter Ken Amaro (too bad I didn’t have any problems for him to investigate!) and Sports Director, Dan Hicken, whose face, partially covered by his “Support the (Jaguars) Movement” beard, looked even more rugged in person. Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars Running Back and leader of the “Movement”, would have definitely been proud!

Soon, it was time for us to take our place in the spotlight – LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION and we’re live on the air, everybody doing what they do best. Spinner (Axemen owner), ever the King of Marketing, charmingly talking about the upcoming playoffs, the Axemen team members each showing that stoic yet approachably entertaining personality for which rugby players are known and Michele and I, all smiles and professionalism, giving the fans yet another reason to come out and support our team. Before we knew it, the segment was over…. but wait! We can’t leave yet – they want us all back on set for the closing shot of the program and Meteorologist Steve Smith wants the Axe Maidens to stand behind his chair! How can we say no to that! More smiling and being friendly – all in a day’s work for the Axe Maidens!

By Axe Maiden, Michele

axemicheleanddeedeenews1When our Director, Darlene, called me and asked if I wanted to represent the Axe Maidens at a live newscast to help promote our Jacksonville Axemen, I was ecstatic!

I had never been to a news station before….let along, be filmed, LIVE!

To be honest, I was as a little nervous that day because I wasn’t exactly sure what I was going to expect when I stepped into the television studio at 6:30p. But instantly, I felt better when I walked in and was greeted by 3 of the prime time anchors of First Coast News and their staff members.

Everyone was extremely friendly and made you feel right at home! Patty Crosby, the news anchor delivering the 7pm news asked if Dee Dee and I wanted to have an opportunity to speak after the Axemen owner (Spinner Howland) ….we said “absolutely”!

So after getting all wired up with mics, we stood to the side and watched Patty work her magic on camera delivering the day’s news until they were ready for us.

We got the cue:
“TWO MINUTES TILL AIR TIME”…the camera man called
We all quickly lined up next to Patty and got situated.
“AND WE’RE LIVE….3..2..1..”

Spinner and a few players explained the Axemen Player/Cheerleader Auction we were promoting and what it entailed. Dee Dee and I encouraged fans to come out and support the event.

As the broadcast came to a close, Patty had us all stand behind her and the weather man, Steve Smith, at the news desk to bid farewell to viewers.

It went so fast, but it was such a fantastic experience! The energy of being in the studio, knowing you’re live on the air while being viewed by thousands of people was something I thought I’d never get the chance to experience…… I’ll never forget it!

Yet another amazing opportunity I got to experience as a member of the Jacksonville Axe Maidens!

Major League Baseball’s premier dance team celebrated the unveiling of their latest calendar with a fashion show and party at one of Miami’s hottest clubs.

Chelsea (left) and Alessandra were revealed as the latest Mermaids calendar cover girls

The Marlins Mermaids strutted their stuff at the exclusive LIV Nightclub at Fontainebleau Miami Beach on Friday night as they debuted their 2009-2010 calendar before a packed venue.

The Mermaids, which were recently named the second sexiest job in Miami by E! Entertainment’s Sexiest Miami Jobs, modeled designs by LF Miami, Nikki’s Beach House Boutique and Eva Danielle to the latest beats as a crowd of fans cheered them on. The ladies also performed some of their dance routines before revealing the highly anticipated cover of this year’s calendar.

Chelsea and Alessandra, a pair of second-year Mermaids, celebrated after they were revealed as the latest Marlins Mermaids calendar cover girls. Both Mermaids made the calendar as rookies but never expected to have the honor of gracing the latest cover on the Mermaids calendar.

“It’s a really amazing feeling,” Chelsea said. “Being a Mermaid has been so much fun for me. It’s been the best thing I have ever done. The Mermaids have given me a lot of opportunities to further my career as well as make a ton of great friends.”

Alessandra agrees with her cover mate and was equally as surprised when DJ M. DOT, the official Marlins DJ and Friday night’s master of ceremonies, revealed this year’s cover for all to see.

“It was shocking,” Alessandra said. “It’s such a big deal to make the cover and I never would have thought I was going to be one of the ones to get on it. It was a lot of fun participating in the making of this calendar and I’m really excited to have been chosen as a cover model.”

The calendar, which contains twelve months of sizzling hot photos of some of Miami’s sexiest ladies, will be exclusively distributed one day only. The first 5,000 fans in attendance at the series finale against the San Diego Padres on Aug. 30 will receive a Marlins Mermaids calendar. The game starts at 1:10 at Land Shark Stadium

To me this is what I think of as the “Classic” ROAR uniform.

votemod
To me this is the “Modern” ROAR uniform. Of course, I could be entirely wrong. Perhaps Sasha or some other uniform expert will weigh in, and detail the history of the uniform.

dancepakSarah Chapman has wanted to be a member of the Toronto Raptors Dance Pak since she was 12.

That dream came true for the 18-year-old Georgetown girl last week when she was notified she had made the team.

“I’m ecstatic,” said Chapman who is already practising with the Pak, in preparation for the start of the National Basketball Association season in October.

“I feel like I’m the luckiest girl in the world.”

Chapman tried out for the junior team six years ago, made it to the finals, but was cut before landing a spot on the team.

“I definitely did it for the experience,” said Chapman.

The junior team was eliminated, so Chapman didn’t try out again until last year.

At that time, again she made it to the final, but wasn’t picked for the Pak because she wasn’t yet 18.

But that didn’t stop her from trying out again this year.

On Sunday, July 26 she and 139 other hopefuls danced their hearts out at the Air Canada Centre vying for a coveted spot on the 15-member squad.

The field was narrowed to 50, then 30, then 15. Fourteen dancers were chosen for the Pak— Chapman wasn’t one of them— but she and four others were selected to participate in the People’s Dance Pak Choice competition in which the public selects the winning dancer.
Chapman was deflated when she learned the team had opted not to go forward with the public choice promotion, but she was elated to hear back a day later that after reviewing the dancers she was offered the last spot on the Pak.

“It’s very overwhelming, but it’s really exciting. It’s like a whole new chapter of my life.”

“I’ve danced forever,” said Chapman, a graduate of Mayfield Secondary School, who has studied dance since she was five . She began her training at the Joanne Chapman School of Dance and currently attends Center Stage School of Dance in Georgetown where she also teaches several classes.

She said she has always thought, “it would be such a dream to dance for a living.”

Chapman’s been busy rehearsing with the Pak and says she’s the shortest and youngest member of the team.

“It’s really fun. The girls are really welcoming,” said Chapman.
She’ll be busy— rehearsing for three hours, three days a week and performing at one to two games a week from October through the end of April.

On top of that, she’ll be attending George Brown College where she’s studying Early Childhood Education and will continue to teach dance at Centre Stage.

“I am super-excited,” said Chapman.

Her goal is to remain on the Pak for a few years, but being on the team doesn’t guarantee her a spot the next year.

She’ll have to try out like everyone else.

From 1999-2006 Dayna Hafetz graced the floor of the Wachovia Center as a member of the Sixers Dancers. During that time she performed at both the 2001 NBA Finals and the 2002 NBA All-Star Game. She also had the chance to dance alongside Will Smith, Destiny’s Child, Pink and Ludacris.

daynasixers

Now she has returned to the Sixers organization as the new Sixers Dance Team Coach. Dayna says she’s really excited to be back and part of the team in a capacity where she can offer guidance and inspiration. She’s already a leader on the team. She was a captain for four of her seven seasons and had the opportunity to choreograph some of the team’s routines.

When she first joined the team, Dayna was a student at Temple University. She balanced studies and dancing going on to graduate magna cum laude with a BA in Communications. After graduation, she continued to dance for the Sixers while working: first in advertising and then most recently as a pharmaceutical sales representative. Dayna recently left that job, allowing her the time to focus on her new position with the Sixers and raise her seven-month old daughter with her husband Josh.

It’s been busy summer. Tryouts kicked off back at the end of June. After the three week audition process, the new squad of ten veterans and four rookies was selected. Two weeks later, it was off to Harrah’s Casino in Atlantic City to shoot the Sixers Dancers new swimsuit calendar.

Next up the Sixers Dancers have another photo shoot scheduled. This time the photos are for the team website and the Dancers’ trading cards. Meanwhile, the ladies continue to rehearse for the upcoming season. Dayna’s plans call for the Sixers Dancers to perform a variety of styles. Fans can expect everything this season from a jazzy groove, to high-energy hip-hop, to a powerful rock-and-roll routine. While she may have a few guest choreographers, Dayna will be doing the majority of the choreography this season.

The life of an NBA Dancer isn’t easy. There are the 40+ home games, sometimes with spans of three home games in five days. Off days become practice nights. Then add in promotional, corporate and charitable appearances. All this while balancing, work, school and family. Dayna knows all this, because she’s lived it. And now she’s thrilled to have the chance to impart her experience to a new class of Sixers Dancers, while putting together one of the league’s best dance teams.
