AFL (The Arena Football League) was played in big cities (New York, Chicago, LA) and had big owners (Bon Jovi, John Elway, Jerry Jones). They didn’t play this year and may never play again.

af2 (that’s right it’s lower case) is the minor league of the AFL, and is played in smaller cities like Manchester, NH, Tulsa and Stockton CA.

The af2 is playing this season and the Conference Championships were last Saturday.

This is the last game for the Pony Express, who won’t be traveling to Las Vegas for ArenaCup X this Saturday. So the girls got a little silly near the end.

sheena1The Washington Stealth have announced that Sheena Shive has been hired as the Director of the Stealth Bombshells, the dance team for the National Lacrosse League franchise. Shive brings with her a wealth of dance and choreography experience, including multiple seasons with the Seattle Supersonics.

Shive is currently the Dance Troupe Manager and Choreographer for the WNBA’s Seattle Storm, a position she has held since 2005. She spent three seasons as a member of the Supersonics Dance Team, where she was honored as one of six dancers to represent the NBA in Tokyo, Japan during the NBA Madness Tour.

Aside from her experience as a professional dancer and choreographer, Shive spent five years as a hip-hop and jazz dance instructor for The Performance Place and is in her third year as a choreographer and judge for High School Competition Routines. She was the choreographer for the Redmond High School Dance Team that finished sixth in Washington State last year. She also spent the 2007-08 Seahawks season as a Gameday Live host for FOX Q-13 in Seattle.

Shive grew up in Gig Harbor, Wash., and understands the impact a new professional sports franchise can have on the local community. “Having the Stealth here is an incredible opportunity for the greater Seattle area and its dancers,” said the Peninsula High School and Seattle University graduate. “I look forward to us being a presence in the community. I’m really excited to be a part of a new organization in our area.”

Shive’s new position as the Stealth Bombshells Director will begin immediately, with the auditions for the dance team taking place on September 12 at the Comcast Arena at Everett Events Center. Registration will start at 9am with auditions taking place from 10am to 4pm. For more information on the Stealth Bombshells tryouts, go to www.stealthlax.com or email Sheena Shive at sshive@stealthlax.com.

The latest from Carolina Correspondent Rick:

Saturday was the Panther’s annual Fanfest at Bank of America Stadium. The Panthers had all five Topcats squads outside the stadium meeting fans, signing autographs and having their pictures taken. Megan and Stacey also helped hand out awards for the 5K race that morning. I participated in the 5K, but wasn’t quite good enough to get an award (though I finished 37th out of 1,275 people!) Stacey may be the first cheerleader to pull off the Charlotte Trifecta. She has been a member of the Checkmates, Ladycats and now the Topcats!

There are again lots of rookies on this year’s squad, which I’m sure attests to the ulta-competitive nature of the auditions. I also spoke with Tara about her two week trip to Hawaii earlier this year as the TopCats probowl representative. She said it was an amazing experience. Everyone is excited about another year of TopCats cheering and even some Panthers football as well.

In the latest edition of On The Flipside is in the studio with the “Slam Girls.” This girl group is all about pro sports, singing the praises of their favorite sports teams and stars…namely the NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers. They’ve got a “Kobeliscious” style…that’s a song dedicated to Kobe Bryant and have a tune for Tiger Woods too! One of the group members also shares who she hopes will be the subject of an upcoming track …Miami HEAT star Dwyane Wade. Finally, in the Sideline Distraction, we break the ice with NHL Florida Panthers Ice Dancer Judy, and get her behind the scenes insight into the team’s sexy swimsuit calendar shoot!
