Ultimate Cheerleaders

Still wrapping up the P-R-O Convention. This time with the always enchanting Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cheerleaders.

bucs260
The Bucs Cheerleaders had been quite busy. A few of the ladies were just returning from a two-week tour of the Pacific and Asia and had flown twelve hours from Guam the previous day.

That smile could only belong to one person! Four-year Tiffany was one of the Cheerleaders on the Pacific tour. The day after the convention ended she was on a jet to England with another group of Bucs Cheerleaders. It was all to promote October 35th game in London when the Buccaneers host the New England Patriots.

Back for her 7th season is the Bucs 2008 Pro Bowl Cheerleader Jennifer. Jennifer is majoring in Sports Marketing.

bucs236
Four-year veteran Tramane is a Physical Therapy Major at the University of South Florida.

Just don’t call him professor pom-pom.

By Joseph Abrams
FoxNews.com

A physics professor who says he’ll do “anything” to get people interested in science is teaming up with the Philadelphia 76ers cheerleaders to offer online lessons on magnetics, mass and matter — all through the magic of miniskirts.

James Trefil’s 20-year campaign for science literacy has led him to link up with some unlikely allies at ScienceCheerleader.com, where he and a scantily clad crew of dancing Darwins offer 18 video lessons on core ideas in science.

Trefil, who’s left behind his classroom for the summer to help on the Brain Makeover videos, said it made sense for him to use “a little sex appeal” in his effort to reach and teach nonscientists.

“Why not cheerleaders?” asked Trefil, the Robinson Professor of Science at George Mason University. “My own philosophy is, any way you can get the scientific message across, that’s a good thing.”

The Web site offers brief scientific lessons from members of the Sixers squad (“All matter is made of atoms,” explains Lauren), and a bit more background from the septuagenarian Trefil, who does not appear in the videos. Visitors can then take a quiz to judge their own scientific literacy.

The site is the creation of science advocate Darlene Cavalier, a Master of Science Policy who has spent a decade working for Discover Magazine and was also one of the original 76ers dancers.

Cavalier, who is also leading projects to increase the number of citizen scientists in the country, told FOXNews.com she doesn’t worry that some people visiting the site might be less interested in their physics than their physiology.

“More than anything I think it does help break stereotypes,” said Cavalier, who said a higher percentage of Tennessee Titans cheerleaders have formal science training than do members of Congress. Cheerleaders have the edge 10 percent to 8 percent, she said.

For Cavalier and Trefil, having a better educated population isn’t just an end in itself — they say that in order for the general populace to debate ideas like stem cell treatments, they have to understand the science of stem cells first.

“To me, scientific literacy is one of the support pillars for having a really democratic society,” Trefil said. “Democracy is a place where people who are affected by decisions have a say in how the decisions are made. And if you don’t understand the science, you are effectively excluded from the debate.”

Some students could be getting more skirts with their science soon. Cavalier said she’s fielded a number of requests from high school teachers who want to use her videos next year “to turn people on to science.”

For the time being, Trefil says his final exams are usually enough to scare students into paying attention in his classes. But he hasn’t ruled out using the unorthodox method next year to break through any stragglers.

“That’s a good idea,” he told FOXNews.com. “Maybe I will.”

Additionally the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that we may be seeing up to 2 dozen of the Eagles Cheerleaders on the big screen in an upcoming, and as yet untitled, movie from James L. Brooks (“Cheers”):

Eyeballs bulged yesterday at Drexel University, where James L. Brooks and crew are filming a comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, and Paul Rudd. About two dozen Eagles cheerleaders showed up for a casting call. Producers need well-put-together women to play baseball players’ wives and girlfriends. All cheerleaders won roles and some will start as soon as tomorrow.

The latest from our Carolina Correspondent Rick:

Football season is officially here!  On Monday I got my Panthers season tickets in the mail and then headed down to Spartanburg, SC for the first day of Panther’s Training Camp.  My boys and I enjoyed the festivities at Panthers Party ’09 as we got autographs from some of the 2009 Topcats and watched them perform a couple of dance routines.   We watched some of the practice and saw the live panther (which I think the kids enjoyed the most).  Can’t wait for the season to start!

If you have ever seen the movie Murderball you’ll understand and appreciate the sport of Quad Rugby but to see it in person in an experience. The Jacksonville Axe Maidens had the pleasure of meeting the Brooks Bandits team from the Brooks Rehabilitation Center a few weeks ago when they played against the Axemen (so far the Bandits remain the only team to defeat the Axemen this season) they were then invited to attend their Summer Slam. Cara shares her experience at the event…….

“There are many sports that can be played from a wheelchair, but is Rugby really one of them? You better believe it! I had the chance to participate in the Summer Slam Paraplegic Rugby tournament hosted by Brooks Medical Center on July 19, 2009 at the Jacksonville Ice & Sportsplex.

Cara is ready to go

When a couple of girls from our team went to the event to perform a dance for the participants, it really raised the energy in the room. They loved our performance, and we loved watching them play rugby. After playing for two 8 hour days the players started to get tired, and many of them left to catch flights back to their homes all over the country. After a few rounds the remaining players asked if there were any volunteers willing to participate in a game. Of course my fellow Axe Maiden Dee Dee and I were up for the challenge!

axequad5
Dee Dee getting taped

We had to tape gloves to our hands, so they didn’t fall off and we did not tear them up when maneuvering the chairs. We were strapped in at the waist and feet. Dee Dee and I were put on the green team and had to hit each other head-on in the wheelchairs to get the feel of it before playing with the professionals. It was a lot like bumper cars. It was so much fun to have the players on the sidelines cheering us on for a change.

axequad4

My personal experience was comical because I was running into people left, and right; finally got the ball, rolled my chair as fast as I could…. In the wrong direction! It was like a scene from a movie, everyone was telling me to turn around, and when I did, I passed it to Dee Dee who went in to score the green team our first points of the game!

axequad2

It was so much fun playing with the quad rugby players. When sitting in the wheelchairs we were all on the same playing field. I am so inspired by what these amazing people can accomplish without the use of their limbs, something we probably take for granted everyday. It’s easy to take advantage and gripe and moan about having to get up to take the trash out, or walk up the stairs because the elevator is broken. The players in this sport did not let their limits stop them from what they love to do. I only aspire to be as brave and determined as the players in this sport.”

From the Buffalo Pro Cheer Blog:

The 2nd weekend of Buffalo Bills training camp usually has a special feature for the littlest Bills fans. The Jr Bills Backers get some gifts, a VIP breakfast, and an up-close autograph session after practice with a lot of the players. They also get to see more of the Jills on hand than most practices do as the Jills had 9 of their beauties helping with the Jr Bills Backers Day festivities. When they arrived at practice, kids got to meet and get their photos taken with Amanda, Lindsay and Kelly before heading to the VIP tents for their breakfasts where they met Jennifer, Loren and Heather at the one location and Stephanie B, Ruby, and Nicole L at the other.
