The XSL has suspended operations for the 2009-10 season, so it appears the auditions for the Detroit Ignition Spark, Chicago Storm Chasers and New Jersey Ironmen Dancers are on hold.  However the New Jersey Devils Dancers (who doubled as Ironmen Dancers) are still scheduled for Sunday, August 2nd. Full details here.

Reminder: The DC Body Armor seek a new choreographer for their second season. Details here.

So after the Summer Softball Showdown ended last Saturday, I hopped in my car and drove up the AC Expressway back to Philadelphia to see the Philadelphia Fight Vixens Dance Team. I wasn’t the only one making the long drive. Vixens Lauren and Dominique are also members of the Wings Angels Dance Team and were at the game in Stone Harbor.

In their first year of existence The Fight Vixens are a  under the direction of Emily Czerniakowski and Cassie Russo, both two year veterans of the Wings Angels. Cassie also danced for the NY Titans Sirens Dance Team for a season.

Another chance to see the Vixens in action this Saturday when the (3-3) PBR Philadelphia Fight will take on the (7-0) Baron’s Brewing Jacksonville Axemen in the ‘2nd Annual Battle to Strike out ALS’ (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) at 5pm at A.A. Garthwaite Stadium 11th and Harry Streets, Conshohocken PA.

In addition to the performances by the Dance Team there will be a 50/50 raffle, and also raffle off other various items/gift baskets from local businesses during the game.

meganmagic2Megan Clementi has done it — clinched the title of Miss Florida USA 2010.

The Kendall native, 25, is still in shock.

“I think I’m still having problems understanding the significance of it all,” says the electrical engineering graduate of the University of Central Florida.

It is a significant achievement — Clementi now qualifies for the Miss USA competition. If she wins the April contest (at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas) she’ll make history. A Florida woman has never won Miss USA (well, once, by default, in 1967).

The former dancer with the Orlando Magic — whose platform is helping kids — was pretty confident when we chatted with her from her home in Orlando a few days after her weekend victory.

Though Clementi sounded tired — with reason — she was also in the middle of moving all her belongings to a pad in downtown Miami (a promise she made to herself if she won).

What do you think made you stand out?

“Thanks to my parents’ great genes, I’ve always had a lean body, but my physical trainer gave me the curves. I rocked the swimwear!”

Did you get stumped by any questions?

“There was no curveball, I was so prepared, but one question threw me off — `What is the biggest issue facing teens?’ Teen suicide immediately came to mind with all the Internet cyberbullying. Everyone was impressed.”

What do you think your chances are of becoming Miss USA?

“I have goals and am ready to put them into action. There’s a big difference between me and the girls who are doing it for the fun. I’m very focused.”

What is your next step?

“There are a lot of next steps. I want to do a lot of appearances and tour the state. Due to what’s been seen on TV lately, pageantry has gotten a bad connotation. I want to turn that around.”

The Body Armor dance team is an integral part of DC Armor Arena Football Team that will begin its second season at the DC Armory in March of 2010. Under the direction Dance Team Directors Bea Codjoe and Jane Said, this team has become an excellent addition to the DC Metropolitan Area.

The Third Annual Summer Softball Challenge was held this past Saturday at the 80th Street Field in Stone Harbor at the Jersey Shore. Ladies from the KiXX Dance Team, Flyers Ice Team, Phillies Ball Girls and Wings Angels slugged it out while raising money for the Comcast-Spectator Foundation, the Phillies Charities and the KiXX Charities.

Originally the plan was for a combined Phillies-KiXX team to take on a team from the Flyers and Wings. But summer shore traffic (I heard on the radio there was a 20-mile backup on Delsea Drive) delayed the arrival of some players, so The Phillies Ball Girls ended up playing on both teams.

This is the last appearance for Rachel as a member of the KiXX Dance Team. She just earned her degree in Organizational Communication from Temple. She has a lead on a job in the area, but if it doesn’t pan out she’s moving to Dallas. Good luck, Rachel!

An after party featuring a live band, silent auction and meet and greet with the participants was held at the Golden Inn just a couple of blocks away. Unfortunately, I have no photos from the party. I had to hustle back to Philadelphia to cover the Philadelphia Fight Vixens Dance Team. Those photos are coming tomorrow.

From Phil’s Buffalo Pro Cheer Blog:

The summer in Western NY hasn’t exactly been one to write home about with rain and lower than average temperatures being the norm for the last few months. With that in mind, the 2009 Buffalo Jills put in a lot of effort getting tickets sold for their 7th Annual Golf Tournament and all their hard work paid off with a sold-out Tournament.

Apparently as a reward for their efforts, Mother Nature smiled on WNY with a day whose beauty was only exceeded by the beauty of the 37 Jills that were on hand for the event. All throughout the day, golfers got to meet members of the Buffalo Jills while they went through the challenging course at Fox Valley Club in Lancaster, NY. Some of the golfers even put up a little extra money and got one of the young ladies to accompany them around the course the entire day and having Danielle, Laura, Kristin, Kelly Ann, or Nicole L along seemed to make the day more enjoyable for those lucky golfers. Some of the Jills even tried their hand at the sport themselves.

So what’s next for the KiXX Dance Team?

Later this week, they’ll begin rehearsing; they’ve got an performance during the 7th-inning stretch at a Phillies game coming up in early August. Then later in August they’ll shoot their 2009-10 Calendar.

There will be a calendar unveiling in November just prior to the start of the NISL regular season.

From BCLocalNews.com:

As summer heats up, so are the streets of Abbotsford.

That’s because the city’s newest sports franchise, the American Hockey League’s Abbotsford Heat, is unleashing its Street Team in parades, restaurants, festivals and local spectacles to promote B.C.’s only NHL farm franchise.

abbotsfordheat

All five women are Abbotsford residents, and all are thrilled to be out and about in the local sports scene.

“I think it’s great for any team to have a face-to-the-name for the community,” says Elise Harris, a 23-year-old law student at England’s University of Leicester.

An admitted sports lover, Harris has experience in the industry, having worked with both the B.C. Lions’ Felions team and the Vancouver Giants. The gig with the Heat, however, presents a whole new opportunity, especially since it’s in her home town.

“Born-and-raised,” she happily proclaimed.

Carly Fredette, 24, also worked on the Felions with Harris and another member of the Street Team, Laura Ullock, a 22-year-old native of Toronto.

Fredette is attending the University of Alberta in Edmonton, but does that mean she is an Oiler fan?

“Heck no!” she quickly shoots back.

Melody Stanyer, 22, is the fourth member of the Street Team. She is a UFV student who is planning on becoming a teacher.

“It’s a cool thing for Abbotsford to have,” she says of the team, “and it brings enthusiasm for sports in general.”

The Heat also bring with them an opportunity for Fraser Valley residents to take in professional hockey without commuting to Vancouver to see the Canucks play.

“They’re not as good as the Heat,” Stanyer smirked.

The team’s fifth and final member, 19-year-old Nicolette Barnes, will have plenty of fun with the team, taking part in events such as Abbotsford’s upcoming International Rugby Sevens tournament, Agrifair and the International Airshow.

“People just surround our tent,” said Stanyer, noting all the attention their wash-off tattoo booth gets.

“I think we’ve tattooed every child in the city!” laughed Harris.
