Murder Victim’s Older System Says ‘She Would Have Loved It’
From News4Jax.com:

Jessica Clifton was pre-teen girl when her family was thrust in the public eye a decade ago by the murder of her younger sister. This summer, she is about to take different stage as a member of the Jaguars ROAR.

maddieroarIn the 11 years since Maddie Clifton was killed by a 14-year-old neighbor, Jacksonville has gotten to know Maddie’s parents and sister, Jessica.

Jessica said that while she and Maddie were close, her younger sister loved baseball while Jessica was into dance and makeup. Jessica said her desire to be part of The ROAR because it keeps her dancing while being involved in a sport she knows Maddie would love.

Jessica says Maddie loved sports, but she also danced because “I was big sissy, and she wanted to do what I wanted to do.”

Jessica said that she has been passionate about dancing since she was 7 years old, and that constant helped keep her going during the stress and grief of losing Maddie.

“It was very chaotic at home and there it was, very soothing,” Jessica said. “I feel that’s how I’m giving back to her. I’m living my life. I’m going at it.”

Four months ago, Jessica was one of 200 young women who auditioned to be part of The ROAR. She was one of only 32 selected.

“I freaked out. I was running back and forth around the parking lot, so I was very, very excited.”

In the days that Maddie was missing before her body was found underneath her teenage neighbor’s waterbed, the Jaguars paused during a game to ask for help locating her and people throughout the stadium wore yellow ribbons for her safe return.

Remembering that day makes being on the field of Jaguars municipal station even more special.

“She loved football, and for me to be out there watching that game and cheering them on, I think she would have loved it,” Jessica said. “And she would have thought it was the most amazing thing in the world.”

And she remembers Maddie.

“I drive pass her graveyard everyday and blow her a kiss and say, ‘Hey,'” Jessica said. “What makes me happy is I can get up and I can see something, just the wall, and I’ll start laughing because something happened there. Or I can look in the back yard and know that we had some of out best memories in the back yard.”

Jessica is now 22 and busy training to be a nurse. So in addition to 12-hour shifts at a hospital each week, she has three weekly practices with The RoAR.

But she said thinking of her sister makes her stronger, more determined and helps her strive to live life to its fullest.

Get to know Jacksonville Axe Maiden Michelle:

How funny life can be sometimes….You just never know where you will end up or what wonderful people you will meet along the way. I’m Michele, one of the rookie cheerleaders for the Jacksonville Axe Maidens. If you would have told me 2 years ago that I would have the opportunity to dance for one the top Rugby League teams in the nation, I would have thought you were crazy! But a combination of the right choices, meeting the right people, and staying focused on a goal with unyielding passion has lead me here…..dancing beside 13 of the most genuine, kind-hearted, and positive women, working under the direction of the an extremely talented and dedicated director, and supporting a great team, our beautiful community, and our terrific fans.

axemichelle

Here’s my story…..A year ago, I started dancing as a hobby… thanks to my good friend Jennifer. For 4 years, she kept encouraging me to start dancing and to try out for a professional team. Each year I had some excuse or some priority that would inhibit me. Finally, one night in May of 2008, Jennifer introduced me to Darlene Clancy. They both use to cheer together for the ROAR of the Jaguars. Jennifer informed me that Darlene and another woman (Donna, who was also a ROAR Alumni) were teaching a dance class over the summer and that she thought it would be a great opportunity for me to get back into dancing.

After talking to Darlene that evening and getting to know her, I was sold….she was so welcoming, I felt comfortable to give the class a try. I figured if the dance instructor was this sweet, I’m sure the other women in the class would be great too! I was right. I went to the first class and had such a blast….I signed on for the whole summer!

Around the same time, Darlene and Donna were just starting up the inaugural Axe Maidens dance team that summer for the Axemen Rugby League. They encouraged the girls in our dance class to come audition. Since I had just started back into dancing, I didn’t feel I was ready yet but figured I’d keep working hard on technique and choreography so that I could try out in 2009.

After 3 months of Darlene and Donna’s dance classes, 2 months of dance studio lessons, 3 months of private lessons, and then 3 months of intense dance audition prep classes, I was ready! I tried out for the Axe Maidens and was one of the lucky 13 girls to make it!

This season has been a BLAST! It’s been full of unique opportunities, meeting interesting people, and just having an overall fantastic time with all the girls and the Axemen. I have had the opportunity to record a radio commercial, shoot a TV commercial, and model in a fashion show at one of Downtown Jacksonville’s night clubs. Game days are out of this world! The Axemen keep the energy alive on the field, while the Axe Maidens and the fans carry that spirit throughout the game. The camaraderie and work ethic that our group demonstrates is uplifting and makes me proud to be apart of such a fantastic organization in the Jacksonville community.

So, while life may have taken a few different paths than I thought it would…..it brought me to the Axe Maidens….and I couldn’t imagine it any other way 😉

GO AXEMEN!!!

To speak to Ashley Johnson is to know her passion for dance. At the age of 24, the Collegeville resident and University of the Arts graduate already has 22 years of dancing experience and lists dancer for the Atlanta Hawks on her resume. Now, she has something to add to her list of accomplishments – a spot in the semifinals of the hit NBC show “So You Think You Can Dance.”

For those unacquainted with the show, “So You Think You Can Dance” is a competition show akin to that of “American Idol,” with which it shares a producer.

The show begins with the standard audition phase, during which a panel of three judges – comprising of producer and former dancer Nigel Lythgoe (a nicer version of Simon Cowell), ballroom dance champion Mary Murphy (a less zoned-out Paula) and a guest – travel to various cities in search of the next great dancer.

Thousands of amateur and not-so-amateur dancers turn up at auditions to fight for a spot in the semifinals held in Las Vegas, their efforts are sometimes good and always good television. This year, Johnson found herself as one of those thousands standing in line outside a studio in Memphis, Tenn., one of the six audition sites, on March 16.

As an admirer of the show, Johnson credits “So You Think You Can Dance” with “opening up a lot of people’s eyes to dance. People always say dance is such a light thing, but they don’t realize the work, the passion and the long hours that we put into it. And I feel that the show really kind of gives you a glimpse of that and lets you know that we’re athletes.”

After a year on the squad, Devan West is chosen for the front of the Eagles cheerleaders calendar.

By Nate Mink
Allentown Morning Call

eaglescheerStanding on a stage in Philadelphia on Wednesday night, Devan West had just finished performing with her fellow Eagles cheerleaders when this year’s cover girl for the new Eagles cheerleaders calendar was revealed.

The 2006 Allen High School graduate couldn’t believe her eyes when her image popped up on the screen.

After all, she’s only been on the 38-member squad for one year. The cover usually goes to a cheerleader who’s been part of the team longer.

”I truly never would have expected it ever. It hasn’t sunk in,” said West, of Allentown, who spent Thursday making appearances as part of the honor.

Janelle Stangl of Bethlehem Township, will grace the back cover of the 16-month calendar that goes on sale next week.

As the cover girl, West is the unofficial face of the Eagles’ cheerleading squad, said Barbara Zaun, Eagles’ director of cheerleading.

Zaun said the Eagles want a particular look for the cover.

”The image itself has to be spectacular.…It’s a combination of a wow factor, the look that we believe our fans will enjoy and one that will be a big seller.”

For the cover photo, West sports an eco-friendly bikini and wears bracelets made out of telephone wire and a necklace made from recycled material that says ”Save the Earth.”

This is the second year of the Eagles’ ”Eco-Friendly” shoot, which incorporates accessories from recyclable items, part of the Eagles’ ”Go Green” campaign to raise awareness on bettering the environment.

Being on the Lincoln Financial Field sidelines for just one year makes West’s cover selection unusual. Zaun said it’s rare the cover nod goes to someone so new to the team.

Last year’s cover girl, Amy Mecca, was on the squad for five years at the time.

Zaun said just making the squad is a lot, let alone landing on the cover of the popular calendar that features photos of all 38 members.

”When they’re a rookie, they can’t believe they’re an Eagles cheerleader,” Zaun said. ”They have to beat out over 500 contestants. That’s a lot to absorb. To see yourself on the cover, you can’t believe that it’s you.”

West, 21, is a Temple University student who is majoring in advertising. She danced at Allen and for the Temple Owls. Trying out for the Eagles cheerleading squad seemed like a no-brainer.

”I was kind of doing the amount of work for it as much as the professionals would require,” West said. ”I thought, ‘Why not take it to the next level?”’

At tryouts, West met Stangl, a 2005 graduate of Freedom High School. Stangl just returned from a 12-day trip to Iraq and Kuwait to visit U.S. troops. She went with five other Eagles’ cheerleaders.

Stangl said the trip was life-changing.

”This is the biggest time for sandstorms over there, and a bunch of performances were canceled or rescheduled,” Stangl said. ”It kind of worked out. We got to have very personal conversations with people.”

Even with the new publicity, West said she doesn’t think the spotlight will become too overwhelming.

”I’m always OK with managing my time and everything,” West said.

Fans can pre-order the calendar on the Eagles’ Web site. Shipping orders will come in next week and will be sold at Barnes & Noble, Borders and Walden bookstores.
