You should definitely visit the website of the team(s) you are interested in. It seems that almost everyone is offering some sort of prep class this year.

I can’t speak to any individual team’s prep class, but I will say I’ve been to a lot of auditions in the 5 years, I’ve been doing this blog. And it’s pretty easy to see who’s prepared and who’s not.

So consider taking a prep class. Auditions have never been more competitive, so you’ll want to give yourself every possible advantage.

jets2-top13
Michelle had to leave before cuts were announced. She had a surprise (not much a surprise now) bridal shower to attend. Michelle made it to finals anyway.

Almost everyone I talk to at auditions agrees: “Waiting is the worst part.” Here’s one way to pass the time.

Jessica and Alyssa are ecstatic on making it to Finals.

Lining up to schedule an interview. The Jets are conducting business-style interviews with the dancers this week.

The Ferguson Athletic Courts on the campus of Farleigh Dickinson University were the scene of the first two rounds of the 2009-10 New York Jets Flight Crew Auditions this past weekend.

jetstop4
Over 150 young ladies turned out for auditions. The vast majority were from the tri-state area, but there were a few hopefuls who came across the country and even overseas.

jetstop2
Ayae is from Osaka, Japan. Last season she cheered for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

jetstop17
Julie is originally from Spain and danced for the af2 Norfolk Knighthawks.

jetstop19

Edwina is originally from Nigeria and came to the US when she was eight. She has danced for the af2 Albany Conquest and the CBA Albany Poltroons. She works in publishing.

You might think that having dancers from 4 continents at an audition is a record. As best I can tell it ties a record. For the at least the last three years the Redskins Cheerleaders have had squad members from Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. Does anyone know of a team (or an audition) with ladies from 5 continents?

jetstop1
Nicole, Jessica and Alyssa. Nicole was a Philadelphia Soulmate. Jessica and Alyssa were members of the New York Titans Dance Team, The Sirens.

jetstop8
You may remember Jeanine and Michelle from the NY Dragons Dance Team. Jeanine was also a dancer for the Sacramento Kings. She made both of these audition outfits.

jetstop3
Here’s the very cool Denise Garvey, the Jets Flight Crew Director. Denise has taken the squad from 10 ladies waving flags on the field and built a full-fledged NFL Cheerleading team. Last season the Flight Crew made their first military tour and appeared in Maxim. This season there will be a “Making of the squad” tv feature and possibly a calendar as well.

jetstop15
Denise is a former NJ Nets Dancer, Knicks City Dancer and Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader. In Dallas her director was Kelli Finglass. Denise says she considers Kelli much more than her director, but a mentor as well.

Julie is a Civil Engineer and originally from North Carolina. She has her BSCE from UNC-Charlotte where she was on the university dance team.

For the first round, candidates performed free-style for 90 seconds for the judges, and when they say free-style, anything goes.

A brief moment of levity among the tense auditions: there are two “Number 64s.”

Dana was Captain of the Lehigh University Dance Team where she will graduate this spring with a BS in Behavioral Neuroscience.

On April 18, 2009 a group of 27 girls turned out to ICE Nightclub in King of Prussia for the first ever Philadelphia Fight Vixens Dance Team auditions.

The open call brought dancers from area colleges — Drexel University, University of the Arts and Saint Joseph’s University — along with dancers with professional backgrounds in fields ranging from secondary education to sales and marketing.

vixens

The 6-hour day began with a warm-up where contestants were evaluated on basic technical dance movement. Then the girls learned a brief dance routine, choreographed by Cassie Russo, which they performed in groups of two in front of a panel of judges. Judges included Ryan McGough, CEO of the Philadelphia Fight, Peter Ilfield, Chairman/Coach, and Brad Kielinski, Executive Board Member. Two Fight Team sponsors were also in attendance.

Fourteen finalists were selected to go through interviews with the judging panel. Along with outstanding performance ability, the judges were looking for girls who exuded showmanship and professionalism — the total package. From the 14 finalists, 11 girls were chosen to represent the Philadelphia Fight as Vixens for the dance team’s inaugural season.

During the 2009 Fight season, the Vixens Dance Team will be at all Fight homes games where they will perform pre-game and during half-time, and interact with fans. The girls will also be present at Fight events and represent the Fight at appearances throughout the Philadelphia community.

The Vixens Dance Team was formed in March 2009, founded and co-directed by Cassie Russo and Emily Czerniakowski.
Affiliated with the Philadelphia Fight Rugby League Team based in Conshohocken, PA, the Vixens’ mission is to enhance the Fight Rugby League experience, on and off the field, in conjunction with the support of the ALS Association of Greater Philadelphia and the American National Rugby League in general.

Special thanks to ICE Nightclub and General Manager Frank Wilson for providing an outstanding location to host our auditions. The Fight thank Marvin Dangerfield Photography for spending the day with the girls and taking some great shots.
We also want to recognize Conshohocken Health and Fitness, the official health club of the Vixens Dance Team.

Two Middletown Area High School graduates have used their cheerleading experience with the Raiders to move on and cheer on a professional level.

Mia Lowry, a 2004 graduate, and Emily Smith, a 2005 graduate, both cheer for the Harrisburg Stampede, the local team for the American Indoor Professional Football Association.

“I have taken and enjoyed many memories from high school and have been able to continue an involved lifestyle with my friends and community,” said Lowry, 23, who was never a cheerleader for the school. “I was a ballet, jazz and tap dancer since the age of 4 and obviously still dance frequently to this day. I have always had a passion and love for dance.”

Lowry joined the Stampede cheerleaders to continue her love of performing and also to network.
“The Harrisburg Stampede plays out of the Farm Show and it is an inexpensive way to spend a Saturday night with friends and family, enjoying local sports and entertainment,” said Lowry. “Our games are fast-paced and lots of fun.”

Lowry works for the Orthopedic Institute of Pennsylvania as a front office supervisor and lives in Harrisburg. She plans to return to school to get a degree as a natural/holistic health practitioner.
Joining Lowry on the Stampede cheer squad is Emily Smith, another MAHS graduate.
Smith grew up in Middletown and still lives here.

“My favorite memory of high school was being able to be on the sidelines as a varsity cheerleader,” said Smith, 21. “I remember going to football games on Friday nights with my grandfather and watching the cheerleaders perform. This always made me want to work really hard, so that one day he would be standing there watching me, instead of us watching them. Making the varsity team in high school was one of the best days in my high school memories.”

Smith cheered for four years in high school, then gave it up for nearly two years after graduation.
“Then I decided I couldn’t live without it anymore,” said Smith, who decided to join the Piranha Frenzy cheerleading team in 2007.

The Piranhas are the Central Penn semiprofessional football team in the North American Football League.
Smith was later approached about cheering for the Stampede and she decided to go for it.
She now cheers for both teams, and coaches middle school cheerleaders.

“This year I will be coaching a competitive team of middle school girls for Central Dauphin Youth Association,” said Smith.

She currently attends Harrisburg Area Community College and works with autistic children at an elementary school in the Central Dauphin School District.

She plans to continue her education to receive a teaching degree.
Both girls enjoy helping their communities and giving back.
