Fair Lawn — With a spanking new stadium and a team expected to do big things in the National Football League (NFL), this may be one of the most memorable years ever for the New York Jets. A borough woman will again be leading the cheers from the sidelines.
Christie Artinger, 25, a 2003 Fair Lawn High School graduate, is in her second year as a member of the New York Jets Flight Crew, a 35-member cheerleading squad that pumps up the crowd during home football games for Gang Green.
Artinger made the choice to try out for the squad last year after being laid off from her job as a marketing executive for Capizio in New York City. She has an extensive dance background and was trained locally at Dance Designs in Fair Lawn, Art of Motion in Ridgewood and Gotta Dance Performing Arts Center in Elmwood Park. She attended Sacred Heart University in Connecticut where she competed on its nationally ranked dance team and then transferred to Montclair State University where she was on the cheerleading squad.
“I had to go back and find a way to make myself feel complete again,” Artinger said of her decision to try out for the Flight Crew.
She made the squad and the experience was one she called the best of her life.
“It was awesome,” she said. “I made a lot of lifelong friends and improved my style of dance. [Being a Flight Crew member] helped me grow as a dancer.”
Just like the players fighting for roster spots, being a member of the Flight Crew every year is not something guaranteed. Artinger had to try out again in May to keep her position.
“I now had an idea of what I had to lose if I didn’t make the squad,” she said. “Last year was the best year of my life and it gets to you the feeling of you might not be selected and someone else might take your spot.”
Artinger passed the audition process and was picked for another year on the team.
“I jumped 5 feet off the floor when I was picked,” she said. “I get to spend another season with my friends.”
The life of a member of the Flight Crew is a busy one as Artinger has practice for three hours, two days a week plus game day rehearsals and her own conditioning routine in addition to a freelance career in marketing and public relations.
“I have never had to juggle so much in my life,” she said. “It helps you learn time management.”
Even though she is busy, she still finds time to help out her alma mater as she choreographs the routines for the Fair Lawn High School dance team’s competitions.
“It’s so great how badly these girls want to win,” she said. “I see so much of myself in them.”
This year is a particularly big one for the Jets, a team with Super Bowl aspirations and a new stadium, the new Meadowlands, which at a construction cost of approximately $1.6 billion, is the most expensive sports facility ever built.
“The new stadium is unbelievable,” she said. “It is great to step out in a new stadium that is our home. I felt uneasy (last year) it being called Giants Stadium.”
Like the Jets, Artinger also has dreams of the big game.
“My ultimate goal is to cheer at the Super Bowl,” she explained.
While the Super Bowl is not until February, just like the old sports cliché, for now Artinger is going to take it one game at a time and enjoy her time on the squad.
“I want to stay focused and perform the best I can for the fans,” she said. “Our fans are even more excited this year. They are the best in the NFL.”

Premiership stars turn out to see Beckham’s favourite team

Premiership stars swapped their footballs for basketballs last night as they turned out en masse to watch the LA Lakers at London’s O2 Arena.
But not being a particularly popular sport in the UK, could it have been the team’s world famous cheerleaders that lured them across London on a cold and wet evening?
A perfect spot to watch the match – and check out the scantily-clad ladies dancing their socks off before and during the game.
Maybe they’d had a word with David Beckham who is a regular at the LA Lakers games in Los Angeles, and has been snapped a couple of times cheekily checking out the cheerleaders.
The Laker Girls performed their energetic routines in yellow shorts and cropped tops that showed off their toned midriffs.
They also treated their delighted onlookers to a costume change and came out for another number in tiny purple skirts and cropped tops.
But while they may have been the main attraction for some, let’s not forget there was actually a basketball game going on…[Article cont’d]
Vikings.com: The A*Team (alumni team) is a team comprised of twenty-one amazing women who have cheered for the Minnesota Vikings between the years of 1985 and 2005. Eight of the twenty-one women have been a part of the team from the very beginning four years ago, and sixteen of these twenty-one have been with the team for the last three seasons. The women enjoy dancing with the A*Team because it allows them to continue their passion for performing, keep in touch with friends, and stay connected with a world class organization.
The A*Team practices every Tuesday to learn and perfect routines, which can be seen at all the Vikings home games on the plaza. However, the plaza isn’t the only place you can watch the A*Team in action! You can also find them in the end zone on November 7th when they perform with us, the current Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders, as well as at the MOA for our Holiday show on November 10th!
Individual profiles for the 2010 Flight Crew have been posted on NewYorkJets.com. Click here to learn a little more about the ladies on the team.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the NFL will promote the cause with a show of pink from one end of the country to the other. Charles charms the Ryder Cup birdies
By Daily Mail Reporter
30th September 2010
There were plenty of birdies to be seen as Prince Charles opened the Ryder Cup in Wales yesterday.
But few of them were to be found on the putting green.
The 61-year-old heir to the throne seemed charmed by the glamorous Wives And Girlfriends [aka: WAGs] of the American team as he welcomed them to a formal dinner. They were certainly dressed to the nines for the dinner at Cardiff Castle and seemed equally thrilled to come face to face with a real-life prince. They joined guest of honour Prince Charles at the event as well as Tiger Woods, who braved the event despite being one of the few bachelors on the golfing set.
But the European WAGs had no intention of being outdone. Gaynor Montgomerie, who is the wife of Europe’s team captain Colin, led the local contingent in a daring plunge-neck pink satin dress. The stylish Scot hosted the event as part of her role as ‘Lady Captain’, and has already been praised for being both gracious and welcoming towards the rivals.
Her dedication to her duty on the tour is all the more impressive given the fact her husband’s behaviour hasn’t always been up to par. In fact, Colin confessed to an affair with an old flame not long after they married in 2008. While he admitted it up the relationship under ‘considerable strain’, she has shown dignified support and happily posed with him for a couple’s portrait during the dinner.
The American WAGs were led by Lisa Pavin, who is the wife of the team’s captain Corey. Known as ‘The Captainess’, the 36-year-old made sure she stood out from the crowd in a bold red dress.
Hunter Mahan’s fiancee, Kandi Harris, turns a few heads, too. She’s a former cheerleader, who tonight swapped pom poms for an electric blue ball gown. Harris is a 24-year-old blonde used to perform for American Football giants the Dallas Cowboys. Hunter and Kandi met in December through a mutual friend and quickly became engaged. The are set to wed in January.
When asked about their whirlwind romance, Hunter has said: ‘People say when you know, you know. I’m always like, that’s crazy talk. But we had a great connection. She’s just the best. I mean, she just brings out the best in me, so that’s all I can ask for.’…
