The Detroit Lions are one of only two NFL teams that have never ever had cheerleaders/dancers. After years of asking for them, fans have taken matters into their own hands. Click here to check out this new team’s Facebook page.

Cheerleaders (not the team’s) look to perform at Lions games

This season, there will be cheerleaders at Ford Field for Lions games — just not on the field.
The Detroit Pride Cheerleaders, an independent professional cheerleading group not affiliated with the Lions, will perform before games at the Elwood Grill. The group also will perform during games — in the seats they purchased — but plan to be very conspicuous.
“We want to grab the attention of the Lions,” said Pride co-director Andrea Wilamowski. “We’re a completely professional organization and we’re answering the call of the fans (for cheerleaders).”
Wilamowski said they also will appear at charity functions, conventions and other events.
“We’re concentrating on doing everything professionally and the right way,” Wilamowski said. “Hopefully the Lions will see that we’re a professional, conservative group and they’ll invite us to perform on the field.”
Lisa Gilmore, a former member of the Pistons’ Automotion dance team, will be the choreographer. Tryouts will be Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at L.A. Fitness in Royal Oak. The group hopes to field 12 cheerleaders, as well as alternates, to form its team.

Corrinda Buck is following in the footsteps — or, more precisely, the dance steps — of her friend Rachel Ross.
The one-time teammates on the Southern Belles dance team at South Albany High School are reuniting as members of the Rosebuds, the official dance team of the Portland Winter Hawks professional ice hockey team. Ross paved the way a year ago when she earned a spot on the Rosebuds. She gave Buck the incentive to give it a try.
“Rachel told me I should totally do it,” said Buck, 18, who graduated from South last spring. “I went to the tryouts and just did my best.”
Up against more than 50 girls at a one-day tryout in early August, Buck didn’t feel too much pressure. She credits her former schoolmate with helping her prepare.
“Rachel was great. She helped me get ready for what was coming,” Buck said.
The tryout included three dance routines and an interview with the judges. By the end of the day Buck was on the team.
She said she is one of nine new girls selected to join 13 returning dancers. Being on the team is a voluntary position, but there are some perks, including gym memberships and being paid for promotional appearances.
Since her selection, Buck has made the 80-plus mile drive to Portland for practices every Wednesday. She doesn’t mind the drive and says she will coordinate her dancing around classes at Linn-Benton Community College and her job at Hasty Freez in Albany.
She plans to attend Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls next year and study to become an ultrasound technician.
Practices are part of a routine she’s enjoyed since she entered high school. In fact, it’s a little less pressure than she expected.
“Really it’s kind of a laid-back approach. All of the girls are professionals. They already know the techniques and everyone is very supportive,” Buck said.
The workouts are about to change, though, and Buck admits she’s a little nervous about what’s coming. She’ll get her special ice dancing shoes and practices will move to the slippery surface she’s not familiar with.
“We played games on the ice to get a feel for it but actually practicing our routines on it will be something new for me,” Buck said. “We have to do all the same leaps and kicks and turns we do on the floor.”
The team will be issued new uniforms Sept. 27, the same day the season opens in the Rose Garden for the Winter Hawks.
“It’s a little scary not having done any of this on the ice and Rachel told me the ice is different almost every game,” Buck said. “But I’m still super excited. I know it will be fun.”

VERO BEACH — Velde Ford manager Wayne Zwick was expecting a good start to the work week — and that was before several cheerleaders showed up on Monday.
Three Dolphins cheerleaders greeted customers, autographed team photos and posed for pictures at Velde Ford as part of a sponsorship agreement between the Miami Dolphins and the South Florida Ford Dealers Association.
“We’ve already had a lot of phone calls asking about what’s going on,” Zwick said.
For rookie cheerleader Brianne Herndon of Fort Pierce and second-year veterans Andrea Simeoni of Davie and Samantha Ruiz of Miami appearances like the one at Velde Ford are a big part of their duties as a Miami Dolphins cheerleader.
“This is my third Ford event,” said Herndon, who graduated from John Carroll High School in 2009. “I went to dealerships in Northlake and Lake Park. It’s appearances like this along with our calendar, which was just unveiled and working with charities that are the best things about being a Miami Dolphins cheerleader.”
Plenty of Dolphins fans came in to meet the cheerleaders, as Samantha Snider and Coree Fansler, both of Vero Beach, were among the first to arrive.
“I love them,” Snider said. “They are beautiful and its awesome there is one from so close by in Fort Pierce. They are way more than pretty faces. John Carroll, where Brianne went to school, is a great school and she should be very proud.”
Fansler, a Dolphins season ticket holder in the past, came in for an autographed photo.
“We have the Dolphins cheerleader’ team photos dating back to the 90s,” Fansler explained. “I think the 1995-96 team photo was our first one.”
After hearing about the cheerleaders from a friend, Robert Sovine, of Vero Beach, came in on his lunch break.
“I was working beach side, all the way over toward Windsor,” Sovine said. “I’m a big Dolphins fan and if they can keep the quarterback going and get the offence going, you know, we will see what happens.”
According to Zwick, there will be other promotions with the Miami Dolphins as the season goes on.
Denver Nuggets: After a week-long audition process, 16 talented ladies have been selected for the 2010-11 Denver Nuggets Dancers. Of the 16, nine will be returning from last year’s squad, while seven will be making their NBA debut during the upcoming season.
