Ultimate Cheerleaders

ABC6 Action News: The Eagles cheerleaders braved the heat to help clean a Bucks County park. With boots on and bags in hand the ladies removed debris from the Delaware River at Neshaminy State Park in Bensalem on Tuesday night. On Thursday, the cheerleaders will unveil their new 2010-2011 Eco-Friendly calendar, which aims to raise awareness about ocean conservation. Only if every UBB cleanup was this beautiful.

On July 6, we teamed up with the entire cheerleading squad of the Philadelphia Eagles to remove 627 pounds of trash from the Delaware River outside of Philadelphia.

Stereotypes don’t apply to these girls. They ROCKED! I mean, they could even out lift Mike.

We first got hooked up with the Eagles’ squad when they were on their way to Mexico for their swimsuit calendar photo shoot. The theme of their calendar this year is “Saving The Oceans” and their Director had found UBB online and purchased a bracelet to feature in one of the pictures (look for us in October’s pic). As we don’t have our address on the website, I assumed they did not even know we were Philly based when deciding to feature us…a coincidence that could not be ignored! So, as a I called them and told them where we are located and more about our work and ways we could work together.

For our joint cleanup effort we had a little more fun than usual. Not only did we drum up some great press and exposure for our cause, we hosted a “Trash Blitz” competition where the girls competed for 15 minutes in a fast paced cleanup competition to see which group of 5 could collect the most.

Congratulations to the Purple Team!

The overall amount of trash that was collected during this cleanup was shocking. Looking at the riverbank I did not think that there was that much trash out there, but the Cheerleaders proved me wrong and amassed a pile weighing in at 627 pounds. Not bad for an hour and a half of work!

The New England Patriots Cheerleaders are going Patriotic this year with new bedazzled red, white and blue uniforms sure to shine from the sidelines.

“They are really NFL glamour,” said head pom-pom princess Tracy Sormanti, who gave the Herald a sneak peek at the sexy squad’s new glitzy duds.

Last year, the 24 high-steppin’ gals sported white uniforms with fringed skirts. But this year, Sormanti kicked up the design by adding red and blue, a team logo and lots of sparkles!

“The Patriots are so lucky to have the best colors in the NFL,” Sormanti said. “I wanted to bring us back to the official real team colors.”

The unveiling of the new uniforms just so happens to coincide with the opening of “Cheers Through the Years,” an exhibit featuring a visual history of 50 years of Patriots cheerleading.

The exhibit at The Hall at Patriot Place in Foxboro opens tomorrow and runs through September.

“Cheers Through the Years” features life-size cheerleader images, photos and videos from auditions and calendar shoots and some Patriots Cheerleader trivia.

Did you know the gals perform 8,400 high kicks in a single year? Or that each girl can do 12,000 sit-ups?

Siss, boom, baaaah . . .

Sidebar: Yes it’s very similar to the uniforms from 2 seasons ago (see below). The 2010 version is more sparklicious!

The Friendswood Journal

Now that she recently passed the milestone age of 21, the self-admitted time for early retirement is quickly approaching for Los Angeles Laker cheerleader Dara.

The Friendswood native has already conquered several worlds while others await.

That’s why Dara, a one-time Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and current Laker Girl, is closely monitoring her fast-track, spirit-boosting career.

Since graduating from Friendswood High School three years ago, Dara has danced for the premier cheerleading troupe in the NFL and just completed her rookie season for the gold standard in NBA cheerleading, the Laker Girls.

As if the world wasn’t coming at her faster and more furious than ever, Kobe Bryant and Co., captured the NBA title last month, adding another diamond to Dara’s jewel-encrusted resume.

In the land of jet-setters, party-goers and deal-brokers, the vanity-obsessed can easily be gobbled up.

But hailing from Smalltown, Texas, Dara’s level-headedness isn’t about to let her be engulfed by sometimes shallow, fleeting dreams.

“Right now, my plan is to re-audition on July 17,” Dara said. “Cheerleading is fun while it lasts, but it’s soon going to be time to move on to a real career.”

That’s where higher education enters the picture.

“I’m attending school at Santa Monica College, and transferring from Texas set me back a little bit,” Dara said. “Not all of my courses transferred, so I had to retake some of them.

daradcc“That’s OK, though. In the next year-and-a-half, I should be done.”

Dara is one of 21 Laker Girls, 18 of whom perform at each home game. However, once the playoffs start, all 21 members are required to display their talents at the Staples Center.

“This was much more draining than cheerleading for football,” Dara said. “The regular season in basketball is 40-something games and then you add all the playoff games and it’s up to about 50.

“That doesn’t include all the appearances and charity events that we work, also.”

Dara says the biggest misconception about professional cheerleading is that when the season ends for the players it also ends for the cheerleaders.

“To be honest, it’s gotten busier since that last game,” she said. “We’re all required to sign up for three charities a month, but we work a lot more than that.”

Lisa Estrada, Director of Game Operations and Entertainment for the Lakers the past 20 years, keeps the Laker Girls on their toes.

“Lisa is great – she’s extremely professional,” Dara said. “She has our best interests at heart.

“We represent the Lakers as an organization. You better make sure you maintain your proper weight, hair and makeup. I mean, you sign a contract saying you’re going to do all this so you better do it.”

Dara has also been fortunate be a part of both the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders and Laker Girls calendars.

“With the Cowboys cheerleaders, there were 36 of us so you were really lucky to be chosen for that one,” Dara said. “My chances of getting selected for the Laker Girls calendar were a little better with 21 of us.

“I was excited about it. Lisa’s main focus is the Laker Youth Foundation, and that’s what all the proceeds of the calendar went to.

“Lisa likes to make everybody on the squad feel equal. We’re all on the same pedestal, and that takes away from unnecessary drama. I thought the calendar was very tastefully done, too. It portrayed us more like the girl next door. It was very classy.”

Dara says she hopes to be part of a Laker three-peat next year, but says it will be difficult to upstage games 6 and 7 of the NBA championship series against the Boston Celtics.

“I think game 6 was more intense than game 7 simply because we didn’t even know if there would be a game 7,” she said. “Then when it happened, game 7 was surreal.

“I mean, you couldn’t have asked for anything more. Game 7, Lakers-Celtics, the biggest rivalry in the NBA. Streamers, confetti…it was something you see in the movies. I’m speechless every time I talk about it.”

And then there was the parade.

“Other than the championship, that was the highlight of my season,” Dara said. “I’ve never seen that many people in my life. You don’t even know how to describe it.

“The cheerleaders kind of started the parade. We were on a big firetruck. It was sort of like the Fourth of July parade in Friendswood…except a LOT bigger.”

Dara, whose major is communications, would like to work in public relations once she finishes college.

“I’ll see where it takes me – I’m not sure exactly what I want to do with it,” she said. “I think entertainment reporting would suit me. I meet more and more people every day, and you meet all kinds of people all the time.

“I have my list of top 10 people I’d like to meet, and Stevie Wonder is No.4 and Denzel Washington is No. 3 on that list. I didn’t get to meet them, but I saw them at Laker games, and that was enough for me. That was cool.”

However, if she lands her desired gig, the up-close and personal interview with her favorite celebs may not be far away.

“Cheerleading is a part-time job, but it feels like a full-time job,” Dara said. “If I make the team next year, it will probably be my last year. I like living in California, but Texas may ultimately be my home.

“I never know what to expect, but I always pray that every day is going to be a great day. So far, it has.”

Two days before the official unveiling of their new “Saving the Oceans” calendar, the full Eagles cheerleading squad will spend an evening hauling junk out of the Delaware River.

The hot, dirty work – temperatures could still be in the high 90s – begins at 6 this evening at Neshaminy State Park.

“Volunteers can come and join us. Everyone’s welcome,” said Barbara Zaun, the club’s director of cheerleading.

The women will be wearing boots, gloves and “There Is No Planet B” T-shirts, as they wade in to yank out cans, bottles and even old tires, Zaun explained.

It could even be fun, she said, as the cheerleaders compete in groups to outdo each other in the squad’s first-ever hands-on river cleanup.

Although no mud wrestling is planned, “you never know what could happen,” she said. “Maybe that would encourage more volunteers to come up and help the cause.”

At the park, follow Delaware Drive to the tents in a parking lot near the river, Zaun said.

The hope is to remove at least 300 pounds of trash so it won’t wind up in the Atlantic Ocean.

That fits the “Saving the Oceans” theme of the annual calendar, which spans the football season and 2011.

For several years, the “eco-sexy” calendar shoots have featured bikinis and accessories with lots of recycled materials. In the new calendar, Sarah Cossa, for example, wears bracelets made from flip flips that washed up on Kenya’s shores. Stephanie Smith’s bikini is made from recycled nylon fishing nets.

But this year’s collection – shot in Riviera Maya, Mexico – goes further.

For the first time, sales will benefit a cause, with 10 percent of proceeds donated to the Gulf Restoration Network, to help clean up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The calendar will officially be released at Thursday evening’s unveiling show at the Prince Music Theater. The soldout event begins at 7:30 p.m.

Sales should commence online soon afterward, with calendars showing up in stores in a week or so, Zaun said.

The first performance of the full squad will take place Aug. 5 at Eagles Flight Night, a ticketed preseason event for fans that features the new football team.

The Hall at Patriot Place has addressed several aspects of the Patriots’ history since it opened, and now it’s the cheerleading squads’ turn. An exhibit at the Hall will be devoted to that history and will make its debut July 8, and our Keith Nordstrom was scouring the files on Thursday looking for the photo of four local women (including Foxboro dance instructor Mary O’Brien Miller) who were on the squad in 1978 when the team re-booted and re-emphasized the cheerleading squad. that photo graced the cover of our 1978 football section, which was the second one published by The Sun Chronicle and the first to take on the appearance of a magazine.

He found the photo, which you can see at right. The young ladies (now in their 50s) are, from left, Patti Dunham of Franklin, Miller, Diane Laquidara of Franklin and Laurel Jones of Mansfield.

Here are the details of the upcoming exhibit in Foxboro:

Pür Minerals makeup Blue Crew

“The dark eye shadow has to stay low and outside,” instructed Tamara Compton, the Southeast marketing coordinator for Pür Minerals makeup. “And the bronzer goes where the sun naturally hits your face. But bronzer does not equate blush.”

So went several hours of instruction on their “game day look” for the Blue Crew, the women who clean the ice, dance on the sidelines and help promote the Thrashers hockey team.

Fans may not realize the behind-the-scenes sponsorships that go into the look of the Thrashers’ Blue Crew or the Hawks’ A-Town Dancers.

Donni Frazier, the teams’ talent coordinator, said basically she is looking for any sponsors that “help them look pretty.”

Last season’s sponsors included Palm Beach Tan, Turner Athletic Club, Jamison Shaw Hairdressers and the Green Room Agency.

Kadijah Johnson, 26, who dances for the Hawks and Thrashers, said she gets her hair done about every two weeks and a spray tan because she likes the “healthy glow.”

Pür, the Atlanta-based brand of mineral makeup and skin care products, is a new sponsor for the coming season.

Julie Campbell, company spokeswoman, said Pür cold-called the dance teams about becoming the makeup sponsor, which previously was national makeup brand MAC Cosmetics.

Though Frazier wanted to use the local company, she and her dancers first tested Pür to see whether it would stand up to bright lights and heavy activity.

“I was making sure it wouldn’t irritate the skin, it could be worn everyday and was thick enough for games and practice,” Frazier said.

The biggest concerns of the dancers on a recent Monday night? Were their lips red enough?

“It’s part of their contract to wear red lipstick on game day,” Frazier said.

That’s a fact that doesn’t sit well with the team members who don’t normally wear a crimson red lip.

“Do you think Donni will say this is red enough?” 23-year-old Shea Allen asked.

“Probably not,” said Christina Zangas, 22, as she grinned with a deep red smile after applying Pür’s Red Ruby lipstick. “It feels clownish.”

Frazier just smiled.
