Earlier this year, news broke out that Smallville star Tom Welling was trying his hand out as executive producer of a TV pilot. The CW picked up his and Kevin Murphy’s Hellcats as one of the dramas it will be developing, and now the network has hauled in the show’s cast.

Since Hellcats is about the competitive and often nasty world of cheerleading, we’d expect stars like the Disney-bred Ashley Tisdale and Aly Michalka to headline it. The Hollywood Reporter confirms their participation in the upcoming series, as well as giving details on their roles.

Hellcats centers on college girl Marti (Aly Michalka, Phil of the Future), who “comes from the wrong side of the tracks.” She’s just lost her scholarship thanks to the struggle with budget cutbacks, which pushes her to join the school’s competitive cheerleading team.

hellcats_gail-ogradyMarti ends up clashing with the Hellcats‘ team captain, Sierra (Ashley Tisdale, High School Musical), who is also her roommate. Despite their initial disagreements though, the “peppy and fiercely intense” leader will eventually realize that Marti could be their secret weapon. She may even guide the team to championship victory.

Also joining the cast is actress Gail O’Grady, portraying Marti’s mom who suffers from “chronic irresponsibility.” This really does sound like something Tom Welling would think up, if he were stuck in an alternate universe.

The Smallville star might not be making an appearance on the upcoming series though. But maybe he can convince his fellow Metropolis-dwellers to make guest appearances, which of course would draw in more audiences for Hellcats.

Currently, the project remains to be in development. The network is hoping to have the pilot done by fall though, joining five other dramas for its lineup. Until then, we’d just better tune in to Smallville instead. It’ll be April 2 before we know it.

Walk-ons are welcome at Saturday’s opening auditions for the Eagles 2010 cheerleading squad.

Candidates must have already graduated from high school and be at least 18 years old.

Having “dance ability, physical fitness, beauty and showmanship” would help as well, since those are the qualities that will be judged.

“We have 38 cheerleaders on the squad and there are currently eight cheerleaders who are not planning on re-auditioning this year,” explained Barbara Zaun, director of cheerleading. “However, all of the current cheerleaders must re-audition for the squad, so in essence, there are 38 spots to fill.”

Registration, which costs $25, starts at 10 a.m. at the SCA Club Lounge at Lincoln Financial Field. Park free in the L lot.

Competitors can bring cosmetic products, snacks and bottled water, and should be prepared to stay until 5 p.m.

No visitors permitted.

The second round, for those invited back, will have rehearsals on March 30, with judging April 1.

The process concludes with an audition show that’s open to the public at 7:30 p.m. April 20 at the Prince Music Theater, 1412 Chestnut St.

The $22.50 tickets are available through www.philadelphiaeagles.com.

The perks include court-side seats for Lakers games — something that’s usually reserved just for the likes of Jack Nicholson — and everyday interactions with the team. But Jensen says that a highlight of being a Laker Girl includes interacting with fans at community events.

That means she’s looking forward to this weekend. The Laker Girls are just one feature of the team’s first ever Fan Jam, which takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Saturday (10 a.m. to 10 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) The second day leads up to the Lakers’ 6:30 p.m. game with Washington at Staples Center.

Among the highlights? Lakers forwards Lamar Odom and Ron Artest will try to break the Guinness Book of World Records mark of 10 made free throws by a pair in a minute’s time. The record is held by Dennis Cheng and Simone Benn of Britain, set on Feb. 13. All players from the team will be there to sign autographs. Fans can take pictures with the 2009 championship trophy. Notable members of the Lakers organization will also be there, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, A.C. Green, Norm Nixon, Marge Hearn and Jeanie Buss, said the team’s director of game operations and entertainment, Lisa Estrada. [Article continued…]

The start of the Chinese New Year marks a time of grand celebrations throughout China. To help launch the Year of the Golden Tiger, the Charger Girls were invited by the Hong Kong Board of Tourism on a six-day trip to Hong Kong last month to partake in the festivities.

“It was a huge honor to represent the USA in the centuries-old tradition in China,” Charger Girls Director Lisa Simmons said. “I think it says a lot about our Charger Girls program to be the only performers chosen from the USA to travel to Hong Kong and be a part of this special occasion.”

The Hong Kong Board of Tourism chose the Charger Girls because of their extraordinary performance ability as well as their strong image and reputation.

The Chinese New Year is the longest and most treasured tradition on the Chinese calendar. According to the Chinese Zodiac, the year 2010 is the Year of a Golden Tiger, which begins February 14, 2010 and ends on February 2, 2011.

For one Charger Girl, the visit to China had even more of a special meaning as it reunited her with her family.

“Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday in our culture,” said Charger Girl Tiffany, who was born in Taiwan and has much of her family still living there. “It’s bigger than Christmas for us. It’s bigger than New Year’s Day in the States. It meant so much to me to actually be on that side of the world and celebrate with my family.”

To commemorate the New Year, the Hong Kong Board of Tourism invited performers from around the world to participate in community events around the city. Aside from the Charger Girls, performers from France, Sweden, Italy, Korea and Japan were just some of the nations also invited. Each country sent performers, but not all were dancers; some were acrobats and singers.

“It was a great experience for the Charger Girls to be in a show with all of the various countries’ artists,” said Simmons. “You can learn new movements from different cultures and enhance your own performances.”

With performances at the International Chinese New Year Night Parade, the Telford Shopping Mall and Hong Kong Jockey Club, the Girls didn’t get much time to be tourists. They ended up with only a half-day to sight-see where they were able to visit a couple scenic points, catch a boat tour and have lunch at the famed Jumbo Kingdom floating restaurant.

After watching too many episodes of Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel, some of the Girls were a bit hesitant to try some of the local food.

“A lot of dishes were ones they hadn’t seen before,” said Tiffany, who speaks fluent Mandarin and helped translate the menus. “They went with these perceived notions about strange foods served here when in fact it was all pretty normal like noodles and shrimp…just traditional Chinese food.”

The trip to China adds to the growing list of countries visited by the Charger Girls, who have traveled extensively. Their past trips have been to Sydney, Australia; Tokyo, Japan; and Berlin, Germany.

Charger Girl auditions for the 2010 season will be held on April 11. To help prepare the women for the audition process, a pre-audition workshop will be held on March 14 from 2-5 pm in the Jenny Craig Pavilion at the University of San Diego. Girls may sign up through Chargers.com.
