Hello Titans fans,

The time has come for Titans Cheerleaders tryouts once again! Finals will be held tomorrow night at the Wildhorse Saloon with doors opening at 5:30 pm and admissions only $10. We’re one of the only teams that allow the fans to watch the last part of the audition process so you don’t want to miss out!

titansfinals3

One of the biggest misconceptions is that once you are on the team, you never have to try out again. That is far from reality! Each member must try out each year and the only advantage veterans have is skipping the very first round of auditions and moving automatically into the semi-final round. That audition took place April 19th at Baptist Sports Park and was a full day of dancing.

Everyone always asks what tryouts are like, so let me give you a little inside information. Having been through several other types of auditions, I can honestly say nothing compares to auditioning to be a Tennessee Titans Cheerleader. It’s an honor to be part of the team, but it comes with a lot of responsibility. And for that reason a lot goes into the tryout process in order to pick the best team possible.

Of course we are judged on our dance ability. You have to be able to high-kick and perform several different types of dance styles such as hip hop, jazz and pom. We perform two dances at each game and with very few practices it is very important that women be able to pick up on choreography quickly.

titansfinals2
We have had women on the team in the past with little formal dance training who just have what we call the “it” factor. A woman with “it factor” is the woman everyone is drawn to in a crowded room! She has poise, confidence and exudes positive energy. And when she is dancing, she commands the football field and draws everyone in to watching her.

Physique is very important when it comes to making the squad. Let’s be honest, our outfits don’t leave much to your imagination and let’s not forget our beautiful swimsuit calendar.

Of course we all want to look great in the uniform, but the physique factor is very important in order to make sure each woman can keep up with the physical demands involved with being a Tennessee Titans Cheerleader. We have a boot camp and physical fitness test in June. Not to mention five-days-a-week practices during the summer. And can I just say, dancing in four-inch heels come game day isn’t a walk in the park either! Games are long, hot, and involve a ton of dancing. It takes someone in shape to be able to keep up and last an entire game.

titansfinals0
Last but not least, part of your score is based on an interview. This is normally a one-on-one interview with our Director Stacie Kinder. By the time you have your interview, Stacie has already reviewed your application and has a good sense of your dance background as well as your education background and/or goals. The one-on-one interview is the time for Stacie to see what your career and life goals are, what your personal priorities in life consist of, and just an overall assessment of your personality. She also quizzes you on current events, politics, and football trivia. Tennessee Titans Cheerleaders are goal oriented, driven, focused, and smart. And the interview process is a great way to make sure candidates are a good match in all of those areas.

Tomorrow will be a mix of so many emotions for all of the women trying out. Literally, your life becomes consumed with tryouts while they are going on. All you can think about is working out, eating healthy, wearing the right thing to all of the practices, having your outfit ready for finals, how you should fix your hair so that it flatters your face and body, tanning so you aren’t washed out on stage, getting your makeup done … and the list goes on and on. Everything you’ve been working towards for months and possibly years all comes down to tomorrow night.

The team will only have 24 spots next year which is the smallest it has ever been and makes tomorrow night’s competition even more intense. We have several women coming out of retirement for the audition, and if you add them to women who were part of the team last year that makes 19 women auditioning who have been a Tennessee Titans Cheerleader at some point. Do the math and that leaves five “open” spots. No veteran is guaranteed a spot by any means so EVERYONE will have to perform at their very best to earn a spot on the team.

I can’t believe the 2008 season is over and we will be saying goodbye to team members who are retiring. Personally I’m losing my best friend in Nashville, Lindsay S., who has decided to retire after four fabulous years of being a Tennessee Titans Cheerleader. She was my big sister my rookie year and I remember getting teary eyed when I learned she would be my big sis. I already looked up to her at that point and I knew I would be able to learn from her. She served as one of our Captains this past season and went on to represent us as the Tennessee Titans Pro Bowl Cheerleader. She made an incredible impact on the team and will leave behind a legacy future team members will talk about.

titansfinals1
But the great news is, tomorrow night new women will become Tennessee Titans Cheerleaders, and they too will have the ability to succeed on this team like so many women have in its ten year history. Come support ALL of us tomorrow night and be the first to see the new 2009 Tennessee Titans team.

GO TITANS!

Life in Broncos Country just got a little bit better

Photos: Broncos Cheerleader Finals

For the first time ever, the Broncos Cheerleaders opened up their tryouts to the public. To say the event was a success would be an understatement. To say the event was a hair-twirling-bombshell-bucking-dance-off success, might be a little more appropriate. The event was not only sold out, but lines of ticketless patrons were being turned away at the door as the Davis Auditorium at DU reached capacity.

The tryouts hosted 61 beautiful ladies, each fighting for one of the 26 spots on the squad. Despite their good looks, this was no beauty contest. The judges, made up of former Broncos cheerleaders, coaches, politicians, sportscasters, and all the like, were looking for more than just a pretty smile. These girls had to be able to dance.

Anyone can tell you that Broncos fans are ruthless. But while we eat up and spit out quarterbacks like chicken wings, we are equally loving in the adoration of our cheerleaders.

Given that, the competition was tough. Even members of the squad form last season had to tryout again, and not every veteran made the cut.

Five new girls were added to the team. One of which, Kaoruko Horiike, came all the way from Japan, just to try out. It looks like she’ll be around for a while.

During the judges deliberation, one lucky raffle winner (pictured in photo #89) won two sets of season tickets. Other prizes include autographed memorabilia, merchandise and game tickets.

The event was such a success that tryouts will be held in a similar format next year, just in a larger venue.

Here’s the list of the lovely and talented ladies that will be distracting you during the 2009-2010 season, and we’re not talking about your wife:

While the Jets rookie minicamp continued today at the Atlantic Health Training Center, the organization hosted its quarterfinal tryouts for the Flight Crew across the street at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

“I’m happy with the quality of girls who came out,” said Crew director Denise Garvey. “Today I’ve seen a lot of promising girls who I would like to invite back for the semifinal round.”

The FDU gym was closed to outsiders as an outstanding group of hopefuls lined up to make a favorable first impression. It was a diverse group of young ladies, each of whom was given 90 seconds to make her case to Garvey along with Brian Mulligan, the Jets’ director of gameday operations, and Mike Alperstein, Mulligan’s right-hand man.

“We’re definitely looking to step up the squad for this year,” Garvey said when asked what she is searching for. “We would like girls who are attractive, girls who look good in a uniform and girls that are poised and outgoing so that they can represent the organization at appearances.

“Personality will definitely play into it, and then the dance aspect will play into it a lot with the rehearsals and being able to pick up choreography quickly. I would say it’s the overall look of an NFL cheerleader coupled with dance-ability and a strong personality.”

Mimi definitely has the look of an NFL cheerleader. A Westchester, N.Y., native, she made the Miami Dolphins squad last year and actually was on the sidelines during their home opener against the Jets. But this year she hopes to cheer for the Green & White.

“In Miami we were dancing but it was more cheerleading-style dancing, whereas in New York I could tell the choreography is emphasized more,” Mimi said. “In Miami I could tell there were a lot of people who had zero dance experience and they could deal with it. I feel with the Jets, if you have zero dance experience, then you might have a tough time.”

Julie is a Warren, N.J., resident and Chatham High School alum. She’s been dancing since she was just 2½ and performed on North Carolina Charlotte’s dance team. She recently moved back north and is excited for this chance.

“My brother actually brought out some pictures the other day and there was one where I was a little baby holding a green and white football in my hands,” Julie said. “I was maybe 10 months old, but every school I’ve ever cheered for has been green and white.”

After the completion of today’s quarterfinals, the Jets will host their semifinals Sunday morning at FDU. And while the quarters featured freestyle where anything goes, the girls will have to nail a choreographed routine to close the weekend.

“I’ve done maybe a little bit more cheerleading-wise than dancing, but I’ll give it a shot,” said Elana, a Staten Island resident who spent the past two years dancing for the NBA’s New Jersey Nets. “I had a few of my friends who are dancers try to teach me a few things and it went out the window as soon as I got out there.”

Next Saturday, the Flight Crew will go clubbing as the Jets host the finals at Pacha NYC. The afternoon event will be closed to the public. The list of celebrity judges include Jets safety Kerry Rhodes, entertainer Donnie Klang, WWE ring announcer/singer Lilian Garcia, CBS Sports reporter Sam Ryan and SNY’s Steve Overmyer.

“Pacha will be the place where it all happens,” Garvey said. “A lot of people will be extremely excited at the start of a brand new experience in their lives, and maybe there will be some from last year’s Flight Crew who will say, ‘It was fun while I did it, but competition is fierce in New York.’

Most of the ’08 Flight Crew enjoyed their experience so much that they’re trying out for the squad again. The members from last year’s team received automatic byes to the final round, but that’s where the byes will end.

“To say you have 19 of 22 of your former team that want to come back and be a part of it again, I think that’s exceptional. That re-tryout rate is normally not that high,” said Garvey, who is entering her third season as the Crew’s director. “I know 60 [there will be between 50 and 60 finalists] will be high for them because they really want to earn their spot back and they know what it’s like to be a part of the team. But these girls at that point will be more attached to the possibility of getting on the squad, having gone through a week and a half of auditions.”

Along with unveiling some tweaks to their uniforms, there’s a strong possibility the Jets will make a swimsuit calendar in the coming year. The Crew has come a long way since its infancy in 2007.

“It’s still in the works, it’s yet to be made, but it’s very exciting regardless,” Garvey said of the calendar. “It’s something we’re entertaining going into year three. The first year was extremely cautious because we weren’t sure how the fans would react — I was pretty sure how fans would react.”

The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, the Flight Crew has grown, and it promises to be better than ever.

“I do feel like, going into year three, the quality of girls we have coming to audition has definitely gotten better even from last year to this year,” Garvey said. “I’m excited.”

2009cbfinals

The Cincinnati Enquirer has posted photos from last night’s final audition for the 2009-10 Ben-Gals dance team. This was the first year finals were open to the public and the finalists had to perform for a live audience. In the past Ben-Gals were notified by letter whether they had been offered a position on the team, so it has been a while before we find out who was selected. This year may be different, as the team was announced last week. Who made the team? Who knows? But congratulations to the girls who did.
