Photo Gallery: New York Jets Flight Crew tryouts

There’s more to these wanna-be cheerleaders than just another pretty face.

A civil engineer, a banker, a medical student and a global contracts expert were among the nearly 150 women who flocked to this year’s tryouts for the New York Jets Flight Crew cheerleading squad.

“I didn’t tell anyone at work I was doing this,” laughed Julie Rogyom, 26, a civil engineer from Warren, N.J., who wowed the judges with her gravity-defying jumps, spins and kicks. “I go from being a tomboy at work mixing concrete to this – fluffing my hair, putting on rhinestones and getting spray-tanned.”

Rogyom was one of 73 hopefuls who made the first cut Saturday and will return Sunday morning to Fairleigh Dickinson University for another round of auditions.

The 30 or so finalists from Sunday will compete next Saturday alongside the squad’s current 22 members for a chance to perform in front of 80,000 fans at Jets home games.

“It keeps you in shape,” said Alicia Gamble, 24, an advertising coordinator from Manhattan, who turned in her work suits for a turquoise halter top and hot pants.

Reiko Nishimura, 29, who negotiates global contracts for Bloomberg, LP, said getting up in front of the judges was harder than anything she faces at work.

“I was so nervous, I have no idea what I did,” said Nishimura, who performed a dizzying string of front and back flips during her 90-second routine, though she ultimately wasn’t chosen. “It felt like two hours.”

Jets officials wouldn’t divulge what the dancers would earn, though hopefuls said they heard it was less than $100 per game.

“It’s kind of sad that players get paid millions and the dancers get paid pennies, but we don’t do it for the money,” said Jessica Montoya, 21, a college student from Manhattan, who threw in some salsa and break-dancing moves into her routine. “Dancers are a dime a dozen. You have to have that extra spice.”

Team of 12 girls from all over California to dance, cheer at Flyers’ games and attend community events, promotions

OrangeCountyFlyers.com |FULLERTON, Calif. (4/29/2009) – The Orange County Flyers, the 2008 Golden Baseball League champions, have selected their “Victory Girls” for the upcoming 2009 season. Consisting of 12 young ladies, the Victory Girls will dance and lead the Flyers’ crowds in cheering at home games at Goodwin Field on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. They can also be seen around Orange County, promoting the Flyers at a variety of community events.

Bob Elder, the team’s vice president of communications, said spectators at the games will have more opportunities to mingle with the Victory Girls.

“We had a good squad last year, but this year they’re going to be more interactive with the fans,” Elder said. “It’s also important that the Victory Girls be out there in the public eye so people can see them. We want them to represent the Flyers well.”

One girl who auditioned, Breanne Nagy, was a Victory Girl last year. Nagy said she was hoping to make the team again because it is so much fun.

“It was a great experience last year,” she said. “Definitely I have the experience now and the environment dancing here with the fans and players was wonderful. I’m hoping to do it again.”

The Broncos have opened cheerleader tryouts to the public — reality-show style.

2009-dbc-auditions-11Teresa Shear, director of cheerleaders and game entertainment for the Broncos, used to get calls every year from people asking if they could come watch cheerleader tryouts. The answer was always no, because she didn’t have the right space or setup to accommodate an audience. But this year, she thought, “Why not?” — and so for the first time, Shear says, the public will get to see “what the women go through” at the Cheerleader Tryout Finals.

It sounds terrifying. Sixty-two finalists, narrowed down from 202, will introduce themselves, Miss America style, before performing a series of group dances and a solo routine. By the end of the night, they (and the audience) will find out if they made the final team of 26, which will perform for the finale.

Shear says the room will be tense but fun. “We did make it into more of a show,” she says. “The audience will be constantly entertained.” And the dancing should be phenomenal. The competition gets under way in the University of Denver’s Davis Auditorium at 6 p.m.; Shear expects to have her new squad picked out by around 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 at www.broncoscountry.com/talent.
