Kingwood Now: Estela Frias (more commonly referred to as Miss Yvette) has tried out for the Texans Cheerleaders before but each year she has come close but never made the team. This year she could make it with your vote.

She has taught dance in the Kingwood area for several years, molding many of the young girls into KHS Fillies. According to Michelle Parnell, “Estela has been a great inspiration to my daughter as both a dance teacher and role model.”

The Texans have narrowed their choices for the 2009 Houston Texans Cheerleaders to 42 talented women and Estela is one of them. Now it’s up to the fans to help the Texans decide which of these women should be included on the final squad of 30.

This is one of those “can you help a sista’ out?” kind of posts.

The Dallas Cowboys introduced a new dance team during this year’s draft day festivities. The team is called the Dallas Cowboys Rhythm & Blue Dance Team, presented by Miller Lite. Most of the R&B Dancers appear to be former Dallas Desperados Dancers. Their performance indicates that they will have a much more urban hip-hop vibe than either the Desperados Dancers, or the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (who also performed during the festivities.)

That’s about all we know about them at this point. Who they are, where they will perform, and their overall role as part of the Cowboys organization is a bit of a mystery, so if anyone has the scoop, please let us know.

In the meantime, you can watch two different videos of their recent performance

Most shoppers don’t bring beach chairs to the Aventura Mall. They also don’t scream and jump up and down. That’s unless the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders are performing.

2009mdcauditionOn Saturday, 78 young women auditioning for a spot on the 2009 cheerleading team performed in front of thousands of fans and 11 judges at the mall’s Center Court.

Fans of all ages, who sported Miami Dolphins shirts and hats, camped out during the competition, which started around 11 a.m.

And the competition was fierce.

Out of the 78 finalists, only 42 were selected to start training.

Twenty-two of the women are what the Dolphins call ”veterans” — cheerleaders who have been on the team before.

Fabiola Romero, 26, has been a Dolphins cheerleader for three years.

And in order to make the team, she and more than 200 women, went through two grueling rounds of auditioning earlier this month.

The numbers got smaller as the judges narrowed the pool down to 78 hopefuls. The cheerleaders, who get paid about $75 per football game, can make some extra money by participating in events like autograph signings and celebrity events.

”It was definitely harder this year, we have so many really great dancers and beautiful girls we really had to stay on our toes,” Romero said.

As loud music played in the background, the girls performed one-minute solo routines and group stunts.

There were plenty of high-kicks, back flips and leg splits. The women also invented their own dance moves and booty shakes.

Friends and family also got into the spirit. Some donned stickers or waved banners and handmade signs with a picture and name of their favorite cheerleader. Others shelled out more cash to have a professional sign made.

”My fiancé and family were holding up a sign made out of vinyl with a picture of me at the Miami Dolphins game in London,” Romero said.

The Florida State University graduate works in marketing for an MRI center — but said she cheers to relieve stress and have fun.

”It’s the most exciting thing, and it doesn’t seem like work at all,” she said.

But the event was really for the fans.

Coral Gables resident David Gonzalez has been attending since 2005.

”I love it, it’s a way to show support for our favorite football team and get ready for a kicka– season,” he said.

This year’s celebrity judges were TV and radio personalities Kenny Walker from Coast WFLC-FM (97.3); Pamela Silva, co-anchor of Univision’s Al Amanecer; Lorenzo ”Ice-Tea” Thomas, radio personality for 99 Jamz; Erika von Tiehl, anchor for CBS4; Aubrey Aquino of Deco Drive; and Claudio Sorrentino, CEO of Body Details.

Rounding out the judge’s panel: Michael Smoller, a Dolphins ticket-holder since 1994.

Cheerleader coordinator Emily Newton, who said the team will spend the summer learning new cheers and dance tricks, said she was impressed with this year’s turnout.

”This year we did things a little different and let fans participate in the judging process,” she said.

In a nod to American Idol, fans were instructed to text the names of their favorite cheerleader — which judges factored into their decision.

”We received over 6,000 text messages in a two-hour period,” Newton.

The lucky gals will also head to St. Maarten to catch some rays and shoot the official 2010 Miami Dolphins cheerleaders calendar.

And for Romero, that’s just one of the perks of being a Dolphins cheerleader. “It’s a well-deserved vacation before the seasons starts.”

The Vikings front office and coaching staff is nearly set to choose the next generation of Vikings players in this weekend’s NFL draft, but before they do that the Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders took their turn to select a new squad for the 2009 season.

On Tuesday night at the Mall of America, the 2009 MVC Final Auditions were held as 62 talented and deserving finalists competed for approximately 35 highly-coveted spots on the ‘09 squad. The 2009 MVC team will be announced on vikings.com at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

The finalists collaborated to perform a multi-faceted program that included an impressive variety of dances in front of a large panel of judges and hundreds of fans and mall shoppers at the Rotunda inside MOA. The program consisted of solo performances, personal introductions, group dances and cheers, a modeling segment and another pom/cheer segment.

“This is what we’ve all been working towards,” said Pam of Eden Prairie. “Tonight’s event is awesome with the judges here and a great crowd cheering us on. It makes me excited for what’s to come if I’m lucky enough to be chosen as a member of the 2009 team.”

The process of forming this year’s squad began with a tryout workshop in March that was open to anyone interested in exploring the opportunity to be a MVC. The workshop offered helpful hints and pointers to cheerleading hopefuls as they decided whether or not to audition for the team.

The first official stage of selecting the new squad occurred later in March when open auditions were held at Winter Park. MVC Coach Tami Krause and her panel of consultants narrowed a large group of more than 150 women down to a smaller group.

The next step was training camp, a 3-week period of practices, conditioning and interviews. The finalists also learned their routines, which they performed Tuesday night during Final Auditions.

Throughout the process, the candidates spent countless hours with each other learning routines and developing chemistry. In fact, they are split up into groups of 4 called “tryout teams.” These teams practice the routines and dance steps with each other in preparation for Final Auditions. What results is a strong sense of camaraderie among the ladies and friendships that will last beyond their time with the team.

“Looking back on it and on my time as an MVC, the relationships and friendships we build is one of the highlights,” said MVC veteran Sarah.

The chemistry built among the team was on display just minutes prior to Final Auditions when all 62 candidates huddled on the stage and broke the huddle while shouting a cheer in unison.

After that, it was time for the show to begin.

The Eagles have a new cheerleading squad.

Their identities, however, will be kept hush-hush for a few days.

Last night, at the soldout Prince Music Theater, 60 young women, including 29 members of last year’s team, competed to fill this year’s 38 spots.

This morning, 13 newcomers and 25 returnees got the good news. They’ll convene for the first time Thursday night – to sign their contracts.

But the official unveiling will happen Saturday afternoon during the Eagles’ draft day party at Lincoln Financial Field.

About a month later, the squad will be off to Aruba to shoot the next Eco-Sexy Swimsuit Calendar.

This year, for the first time, fans can join the trip, staying in the same hotel, even taking part in beach volleyball and flag football games with cheerleaders. (For details, go to www.philadelphiaeagles.com, click “Cheerleaders,” and look for the Aruba promo.)

Brett “Spike” Eskin, midday host for WYSP (94.1 FM) and yes, son of a certain sports talker, emceed last night’s event, in which bikinied women individually strutted the stage; danced in groups of three, wearing mostly shorts and short tops; and then, sporting dresses, talked one by one about themselves before answering judges’ questions.

Topics ranged from defining beauty to tackling social issues, from handling embarrassing moments to trading places with anyone for a day.

“Barack Obama,” said Amy Mecca, the operating room nurse who was on the cover of last year’s calendar.

She elaborated, of course.

The judging panel included former NFL greats Deion Sanders and Marshall Faulk, as well as Eagles co-owner Christina Lurie, director of cheerleading Barbara Zaun, squad choreographer Suzy Zucker, and a variety of local notables, including 6ABC sportscaster Keith Russell.

Although the crowd last night didn’t learn who made the squad, some prime candidates emerged.

Top vote-getters were announced in four categories, and all were on last year’s squad: Alicia Lee for beauty (she also won last year), Jamie Steinberger for fitness (another repeat winner), Jennifer Kaiser for dance, and Amanda Bedford for the interview.

The crowd held up signs and cheered enthusiastically throughout the night.

Only once were boos heard – when Spike, while introducing Sanders, uttered an unfortunate phrase …

The Dallas Cowboys.

Veteran Miami Dolphins Cheerleader Lacie R. is on the move again. After cheering with the Dolphins, she relocated to Dallas and auditioned for the Cowboys Cheerleaders and Mavs Dancers. It looks like this year, she headed back east, where she auditioned and was selected to the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders. View her page here.

Congratulations Lacie!
