SEATTLE — After today’s parade that celebrates the Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl victory, Port Townsend native Brita Guthrie’s life will go back to normal.

She had already been back to her full-time job in the marketing department at www.Zulily.com, an online supplier of children’s clothing, for one day Tuesday after performing as a member of the Sea Gals cheer and dance team at Sunday’s Super Bowl in New Jersey.

She was seriously sleep-deprived but in a very good mood.

“We only got about two hours of sleep a night, but it was worth it,” she said.

“On Friday morning, when we were waiting to go on the ‘Today’ show, I was thinking that I’m really going to miss getting up at 4:30 in the morning to be with the other girls.”

She’ll take a day off today to be part of a parade in Seattle that celebrates the Seahawks dominating the Denver Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII.

From Guthrie’s vantage point, the game didn’t seem lopsided.

“Every player on the field gave their best to the game, and whoever plays the best will win,” she said.

“There are so many emotions tied up in a game of this caliber. The fact that the Seahawks were playing so well made us all proud.”

Guthrie, who graduated from Port Townsend High School in 2008, is a member of the 33-member squad that performs dances and cheers between plays.

Going to the Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., was a special treat because it is the only occasion when the squad performs outside of the Seahawks’ home stadium.

At CenturyLink Field, the women split into groups of eight and dance at each corner of the field, outside of the goalposts.

At the Super Bowl, the Sea Gals performed on opposite ends of one side of the field while the Denver Broncos’ squad took the other side.

While the Super Bowl was considered an away game for the Seahawks, there were plenty of Seattle fans, including some who Guthrie recognized, in the stadium cheering the team on.

“It was amazing to see how many fans had made the trip,” she said.

“It made it more like a home game.”

While she is a dedicated Seahawks fan, the payoff, she said, is that she gets to dance in public. Once she left Port Townsend, there weren’t a lot of places she could dance, and she said she missed it.

While attending the University of Washington, Guthrie decided to audition for the school’s cheerleading squad, which led to a successful audition for the Sea Gals.

If she chooses to try out again, it’s not a done deal, she said, because even returning squad members are required to audition each year.

During Super Bowl weekend, the Sea Gals stayed in Manhattan in New York City, a place Guthrie had visited only once before during a family trip when she was in middle school.

Guthrie is the daughter of Port Townsend High School teacher Jim Guthrie and his wife, Carol. Brita has a 22-year-old sister, Kirsten.

Jim Guthrie said he didn’t spot his daughter on TV during the game but was able to pick out the back of her head during the trophy ceremony at the end.

After the game, the cheerleaders and players attended a huge victory party that featured entertainment by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and a performance by a band led by Seahawks owner Paul Allen on guitar.

While earning a national championship has been a long-term goal for many 12th Man fans, the trip gave Brita Guthrie a chance to fulfill one of her childhood ambitions.

“When I was 8 years old, my dream was to be on the ‘Today’ show,” she said.

“I used to tell my parents that whatever I do, I want to be good enough so I am featured on the ‘Today’ show.

“This was a real-life dream come true.”

It’s the chance of a lifetime for any NFL cheerleader, a chance to cheer and perform at the Super Bowl. And for a mother and daughter from Denver, it’s an honor they both get to share.

Brittany Anderson grew up hearing the stories of her mom proudly cheering for the Broncos in the 1970’s.

“I just remember always talking about my mom. The fact that she went to the Super Bowl. And just being all so proud of her,” said Brittany Anderson.

Now it’s Brittany’s turn, she’s headed to the Super Bowl as a Broncos cheerleader, just like her mom did so many years ago.

“Then now it’s just like, she can be proud of me for following in her footsteps,” said Brittany.

Brittany and her mom, George Anderson, describe it as a wonderful bond they both can share.

“It will be the most exciting thing that she’s ever done,” said mom George.

George Anders had her exciting moment in 1978, when the Broncos played the Cowboys in the Super Bowl. She wants her daughter to enjoy the experience, but she’s also hoping for something else this time around.

“They want a victory. That’s something I didn’t get so that’s the thing I want for her the most! Is a victory!” said George.

Brittany is hoping for the same thing, “I always say that because they didn’t win back then… She had a child to go to the Super Bowl and so that we can get the win.”

The program might be a bit different 36 years later. George said the dancing is much harder now. But their passion for the Broncos is as strong as ever, and Brittany is grateful for what her mother passed on to her.

‘The heart for the Broncos. And all of her talent and support,” said Brittany of her mom.

The entire Anderson family is in New Jersey for the big game to cheer on Brittany and, of course, the Broncos.

Over the weekend Terra Saunders unveiled the new and improved website for her company Dallaswear Uniforms. The website has undergone a complete makeover, and the new layout is bright, punchy, and very eye-catching. DU has all sorts of goodies for you to ooh and ahhh over. The new styles for 2014 are featured front and center, and there’s so much to discuss, I honestly don’t know where to begin. The new styles? The new fabrics? The new City Wear line? The models? There’s so much to take in.

These are a few of the new designs

One thing they have in common is *sparkle*sparkle*sparkle*. DU’s “Super Bling” options are more popular than ever and will for sure make you stand out from the crowd. You can go with the standard AB crystals (clear with a rainbow shimmer), and you also have the option to mix in crystals of different colors in gradations of color and pattern. Gorgeous! Still photography doesn’t adequately capture the twinkle, but those crystals make a huge difference in person. HUGE. The weird thing is that upgrading your outfit to add bling – even MEGA bling – doesn’t add to the delivery time. I don’t know how that’s possible. I have seen many many episodes of “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” and I know it takes hours to glue those little suckers on. One…by one…by one…

Look familiar? These are variations on the outfits worn by the NFL All Star Cheerleaders during their tour through England last Fall. Long sleeves, short sleeves, no sleeves. It’s all good.

One of the most exciting new aspects of the DU collection are the new custom prints.

They seem to sparkle without crystals. Imagine if you added crystals on top. Crystals on top of crystals!

This has got to be the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long time.

I love that it comes in two different shades of denim.

Pockets! Pockets on the booty! Love it. Ok, they aren’t real pockets, but that’s stinkin’ adorable. One of the great things about the DU site is they have large photos, front, back, and close up of every style, and sometimes in alternate colors, so you can get a good look at everything before you make a decision.

OK, how pretty is this ombre?

You gotta love the technology that makes this kind of thing possible. The colors remind me of every air-brushed t-shirt I ever bought on the boardwalk. You know, the ones that have a heart or a sunset and your name in fancy script across the front.

Sidebar: do you recognize any of these lovely ladies? Terra’s new designs are modeled by members of the Allen Americans Ice Angels dance team. (Click here for more on the Ice Angels.) You might recognize the two denim ladies above from the last season of “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team.” Amy, the blonde, was a finalist, and Vivian made it to training camp and won the fan favorite vote.

But back to the prints, here’s one that isn’t even on the DU website yet:

The Royal top and Royal shorts. These two pieces will be offered in a few different colors and if that’s not enough sparkle for you, DU can add real crystals on top of the printed ones like in the photo. (If you look closely you can see the Swarovski crystals in every other row.)

The next new concept is the DU City Wear line. This collection includes shorts and a matching top for just about every market in the NFL that has cheerleaders.

So these are just a few highlights. In addition to all the new stuff, they’ve made some adjustments in many of their other tops to improve the fit and feel. I suggest you get to clickin’ and get over there now. But before you do, here’s a special offer. Everyone who uses the coupon Code ULTIMATE this month will get a special gift with their order. I don’t know what the gift is, but if it’s money, I want half!

The Town Talk
Jan. 31, 2014

NANGARHAR PROVINCE, AFGHANISTAN — Army helicopters arrived, midmorning, delivering a taste of American tradition and entertainment to a group of Fort Polk soldiers at Forward Operating Base Fenty.

Nine members of the cheerleading squad for the NFL’s Washington Redskins visited the troops Jan. 22 during a tour of Afghanistan. Forward Operating Base Fenty is home for two deployed 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Task Force Patriot battalions — 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment and 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion. There are various smaller units assigned there as well.

During their visit, the cheerleaders and an Elvis Presley impersonator performed, ate lunch with the troops and signed autographs during a meet-and-greet session immediately following their performances.

“We want to be here; we fought our teammates to come here, not physically, because we know how important what you guys do for us is,” said Ashley A., co-captain of the cheerleaders. The Redskins do not release the full names of members of the cheerleading squad.

“I think it’s great,” Spc. Matthew Acker said. “It lets us know that people back home care.”

Entertainment like this can play a part in lifting soldiers’ morale, which encourages them to make it to the end of their deployment and ultimately make it home, Acker said.

“It motivates you for a while; you need motivators sometimes,” he said. “It’s a reminder that you’re doing something good and that people believe in what we’re doing over here.”

For one cheerleader, performing for troops comes from a sense of duty that for her is close to home.

“My whole family was in the military so I have a big heart for (deployed soldiers). I know the sacrifices they go through, I’ve been through it,” said cheerleaders co-captain Mila T. “I just want them to know that people are still waiting for them when they return home.”

Even though an all-female cheerleading team visited a combat zone, there were female soldiers in the audience as well.

“We try to include them in the show,” Ashley said. “We make sure to give them a shout out in our show, interact with them and let them know that they’re just as important to us as the males because they’re doing just as much.”

Accommodating the female audience members was noticed and appreciated.

“I thought it was outstanding –– I’m a big Redskins fan,” said Sgt. Tiffani Fisher, a radiology technician. “I was more than OK with the dancing and outfits. I appreciate beauty where it lies.

“It’s also nice to see people come out to the desert just to show us a good time and support the troops.”
