Chargers Are Their Own Worst Enemy, Give Up 35 Second Half Points In Collapse To The Broncos

It was a tale of two halves.  The first half belonged to the Chargers, who scored 24 points and thoroughly dominated the Broncos.  But the second half belonged to the visitors, who used five turnovers by Charger QB Philip Rivers to score 35 points to win the game. For those of us that were in attendance, this was a strange and bizarre game…or two games as it were.  Un-fricken-believable!  Peyton Manning looked absolutely pedestrian in the first half, but reincarnated himself in the second as Superman, throwing several clutch touch passes that reminded us of his MVP years in Indianapolis.

But perhaps the most dismaying aspect of the game was the continued erratic play of Philip Rivers, who continued a bad habit of throwing untimely interceptions.  Several of his throws appeared to be lacking the zip or crispness that he had shown early in his career and he has since become an interception throwing machine.  Clearly, Rivers was his own worst enemy on Monday night.

Final Score: San Diego Chargers – 24   Denver Mannings – 35

My Own Worst Enemy – Lit

Oh well.  At least the Charger Girls came to play…first half and second half.

I hate nationally televised night games, photographically speaking.  Sure it’s exciting in a way that a regular game is not.  But it also poses many problems…irritations really.  It’s dark and stadium lighting sucks.  It’s more crowded with additional people on the sidelines, making it near impossible to get a clean shot of the cheerleaders.   There’s more visiting and home fans, and they have many more hours to get lubricated, if you get my meaning (although the three Bronco fans from Utah sitting next to me were really cool).  And it’s takes forever to get out of the parking lot.  Oh well…the things I do to get you these shots.  But enough complaining.

So let’s begin this week’s coverage with the Line Captains:  Kara (welcome back!), Lauren O., Natalie, and Marissa.

This week’s Charger Girl of the Day always give me some great shots.  She is a line Captain and hails from the beautiful city of Santa Maria…introducing Natalie.

We begin our regular coverage of the absolutely fabulous (and I mean it sincerely) Charger Girls with: Alexa, Alexis L., Allizon, Amanda, Andrea, Angela, and Anjelica.

We continue our parade of Charger Girls with: Ariel, Clarisse, Courtney, Hope, Katelyn, Katie, Kayla, and Kylie.

We conclude this week’s coverage with: Lauren P., Meridith, Nicole, Paige, Rachel, Starkesha, and Tawnie.

To me, the Chargers have a lot of issues.  First, they need to straighten out whatever is wrong with Philip Rivers, whether it is his decision making, arm strength or throwing mechanics.  Second, we need to get a consistent, top level pass rushing defensive end like Shawn Merriman used to be, and a shut down cover corner.  Third, we need to improve the offensive line.  We need a line that can provide more time for Rivers and open more holes for Ryan Mathews.  I don’t know if we need to get a new defensive coordinator or not, but I think the defense at times has not been very effective.  Yes, the Chargers have a statistically good run defense, but there were far to many big plays with respect to the last game.  And I don’t know about head coach Norv Turner, but there are a lot of rumblings about him in the blogosphere and I must admit some of the criticisms are compelling.  And lastly, perhaps it is time to reevaluate GM A. J. Smith.

Last year, I mentioned that there was a point in the season where the team was at a crossroad.  And now, I am beginning to think that we may be past that point and that a fresh perspective might be needed to take the bolts to the next level.  Sometimes teams run into an organizational inertia that can only be overcome by changing gears and going with something new…new players, new coaching staff, and new front office.  I am not sure that it is that time yet, but the thought is coming into my mind that a change might be needed.  There is no way that this team in this division should not finish at the top and if it doesn’t, then something needs to change.

But to end on a positive note, there is no need for change with respect to the Charger Girls….they’re perfect in my opinion.  Stay the course!
