Ultimate Cheerleaders

Simma Wear has some good audition tips for the aspiring professional dancer.

My Top 5 Mental Tips For Defeating Nerves:

1. Don’t say “Me Too” when your friend says she’s nervous. It may sound small, but you’re already putting yourself in a position to be defeated. You can still be humble and relatable without making small talk with the “I’m nervous” while waiting. Your mind set is everything, so don’t give into your environment.

2. Think of your audition as you’ve already made it. You’re already on the team, and it’s just a 2 min performance where your front and center. Think of it has it’s your time to shine and perform, not as it’s your time to make a team or be judged. Stop thinking of your audition as an audition!

3. Distract yourself from emotions right before you audition. We all get lost in emotion, “What if I’m not pretty enough? I don’t remember the last step! Oh no I’m next to a returner!” Our thoughts can throw us into a panic. One of my favorite techniques is just to look around the room and state facts in your head. “There’s the Floor” “The wall is blue.” “There’s four chairs.” “The mirror is clean.” Of course, don’t make it seem like you’re going crazy, but slowly looking around the room and stating facts has a way of calming the mind and distracting you from the nerves.

4. Forget about trying to be perfect. Make your audition less about you and more about your audience. The more you focus on connecting with your audience than remembering every move, your nerves will continuously go away through your audition, especially if you see they’re enjoying it. I try to capture judges within the first 2 8 counts. That way if I don’t remember the ending of the routine, they won’t even care as I captured them with performance within the first couple of seconds. Once you build that connection on day 1, it’s easier to get through a week long audition knowing you already have them even more on your side!

5. Remind yourself how prepared you are! Well are you prepared? If you’re not, of course your going to feel nervous but if you’ve been putting in work, continuously remind yourself that your body will go into muscle memory when it comes to style and body positions.  Trust your body to do it’s job!
