Deborah J. Nelson founded Satin Stitches® in early 1978, as a one-woman venture after working as a Fashion Designer/Patternmaker for a high-end woman’s apparel company for five years in Minneapolis, MN. By 1979, Deborah added a team of  costume design professionals to help create the very best custom dance performance costuming available. Satin Stitches moved to its current location in 1989, and expanded to double the space in 1994. Although many changes have occurred at Satin Stitches in its nearly 40 year history as a high-quality, custom dance/performance costume manufacturer, the company still remains true to its beginnings, by consistently creating both completely original and customizable costumes for all types of performers including individuals and groups of any size.

Deborah’s 40+ years of professional design, fitting, alterations, and pattern-making experience hails her as a leader in the industry. A Bachelor of Fine Arts (Major: Fashion Design) graduate and former instructor at The Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD), Deborah continues to share her knowledge and experience as both a speaker and writer on topics related to the design, selection, and care of performance costumes and uniforms. Her articles and designs have been featured in magazines including Dance Spirit, Dance Teacher, Survival Guide, Cheerleading/Dance & Drill, Synchronized Skating, and other national publications. Deborah also presents informational seminars at dance, skating and music educator clinics across the country, is a member of United Dance Merchants of America and served on the Editorial Advisory Board of Dance Spirit Magazine for its first five years.

It’s hard to source NBA dance team photos.  They do not post game day galleries with the frequency or regularity of their sisters in the NFL, but I was able to scrape some photos of the Brooklynettes Dancers from their social media sites.  So let’s take a closer look at this amazing NBA dance team.

The Atlanta Hawks are looking for the most enthusiastic, personable dancers/cheerleaders to represent the team on and off the court! Attending this Prep Clinic will put you behind the scenes with the ATL Dancers and give you valuable information to prepare you for your audition!

2019 Audition Process

3 things to remember:

  1. GET IN DANCE CLASS! The women on our team are consistently the most well trained, technical performers on the NFL stage. If you aren’t in class, it is hard to come to auditions at your peak.
  2. SHOW UP IN TOP PHYSICAL SHAPE! Like any athlete who tries out for a team, you are judged on how you look that day. Don’t leave anything to chance. Make sure you are at 100% to look your best and to have the stamina during a long audition week.
  3. DON’T GET DISCOURAGED IF IT’S NOT YOUR YEAR! Most women who audition do not make the team in their first shot at it. For many women, the audition process is new. Soak in all the information this year and be ready to take what you have learned and work on what you need to for next year.

Ways to Prepare:
Audition Prep Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday starting mid-February. Classes will cover dance technique, flexibility, choreography and performance skills. Taught by two former Captains, the classes are a great way to hone your skills and pick up our unique style.

Director, Shawna Peters, and Assistant Director, Shelly Trujillo, will host the 2019 Audition Workshop (February 16). The focus will be on giving you all the tools you need to have a successful audition including dance technique, audition pointers, interview workshop, and finalist week specifics.

We hope the preparation opportunities above help you in reaching your goal of making the 27th team of the Denver Broncos Cheerleaders. We look forward to seeing friends, familiar and new, at this year’s auditions!

Sincerely,
Shawna Peters

Audition FAQ

How can I best prepare for the audition?

We highly encourage anyone planning to audition to attend the audition master workshop and prep classes. They are very informative and will help prepare you for audition day.

What is the audition process like?

For prelims, applicants will perform 30 seconds of improvised dance followed by the preliminary audition routine in groups of three for a panel of judges. There will usually be a small group that is requested for a call back audition. Cuts will be made and candidates will be narrowed down to approximately 50 finalists. The 50 finalists will spend the next week being tested on their dance technique, fitness, football knowledge and interview skills. On Sunday March 24th, the finalists will be scored at the final showcase that is open to the public and held at the Hilbert Circle Theater. The 2019 Colts Cheerleaders will be announced at the end of the show.

What is the best advice for someone auditioning?

We encourage candidates to watch videos of the current team online to learn the choreography style. Interview and fitness are also an important part of the audition process. We recommend that you practice your public speaking and have a fitness regime leading up to auditions.

If I make the squad, what is the time commitment?

The cheerleaders practice every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00-10:00pm from May-January with occasional weeks off. Cheerleaders perform at all home games and participate in appearances in the Indianapolis area.

Is this a full time job?

No, this is a part-time job. Cheerleaders are compensated for all games, practices and appearances. We do encourage all cheerleaders to have a full time job and/or be a full time student.
