More on the Magic Finalists…

Yesterday I posted about the finalists for the 2012-13 Orlando Magic Dancers. Well, I have some more goodies for you today. There’s a lot of cool audition-related stuff on the Magic website, so make sure you check that out: There’s an interesting article, a photo gallery, Some cute trivia about the finalists, and loads of video.

Plus, there is still time to vote!

And finally, a little more scoop for you. I mentioned that finalist Tiffany was a Dolphins Cheerleader for four seasons.

There are also a few other notables in the finalist group:
Brittany, Nicole, & Melissa are alumni of the Orlando Predators Prowlers dance team

Ashley S was a Miami Marlins Mermaid (unfortunately that team is defunct as of this year, so maybe this will be another chance for her to do some dancing)

Marissa was a member of City Girls, the dance team for Orlando City Soccer

Jamie was a Cleveland Cavalier Girl for seasons

We also have a veteran who is trying to make a comeback after a 4 year Hiatus. Candace was on the team from 2004-07, and retired in order to go after her nursing degree full force. Now she’s a full fledged R.N. and she wants back in. Her sister Heather has been a Magic Dancer for 2 seasons, and is also a finalist this year. If both Candace and Heather make it, it will be their first time to be on the team together at the same time, so fingers crossed for the two of them!

The Scarlet Internet Starlet: An Interview with Panthers Ice Dancer Meg Liz Miller

Meg Liz (right) cheers on the Ice Dancers stage at a Florida Panthers game at BankAtlantic Center

One gets the feeling that a shortage of ideas will never ever really be a problem for Florida Panthers Ice Dancer Meg Liz Miller. And Meg Liz’s energy to put those ideas into action seems as abundant as Miami’s summer sun.   In a very rare combination, cheering for both major league baseball and NHL teams, Meg Liz has been on two South Florida pro dance squads; first the Mermaids of the baseball’s Florida Marlins, and currently finishing up her rookie season as an Ice Dancer for hockey’s Florida Panthers.

But that is just the tip of the iceberg. Meg Liz is a self-described “Athlete, Fitness & Motivational Enthusiast, Social Media Expert, Graphic Artist, and YouTuber.”  Multimedia in every way, this “Internet Fitness Starlet” comes complete with a website, Twitter, Facebook, and a YouTube channel, featuring her Ice Dancers calendar shoot video series (parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).  She applied her social media enthusiasm to her Ice Dancer friends by setting up individual Facebook accounts for the squad members, which allows unique connections to the fans.  Perusing Meg Liz’s website, one finds a beehive of activity, including being part of the Redline Xtreme Racing Girls, with the unifying factor of her desire to motivate.  Meg Liz’s site’s includes her statement of purpose, “My mission is to encourage all my friends, fans, and family to LOVE LIFE as much as I do.”

Ice Dancers Alexis and Meg Liz, and we thank Alexis' dad for the photos for this piece

Meg Liz took time from this incredible buzz of activity to discuss her motivations and their connections to her pro cheerleading career with UltimateCheerleaders.com.  We learn about Meg Liz’s connections to an animated, legendary mermaid, to “falling into” being a Marlins’ Mermaid on opening day, to possibly trying on mermaid gowns someday on TLC.

UC.com: I can just imagine when you were young, you were the girl with the lemonade stand on the street, but yours had WiFi, a drive thru, and a customer loyalty program. Have you always had a lot of self-motivation and what is the first idea you remember having that you put into motion 100%?

MLM: Yes, you got that right!  I have always been the young girl who was constantly dreaming of MORE!  My nickname is “Ariel” from The Little Mermaid, partly because of my long red hair, and also because as a young child, my mind was always reaching into a different world where all my dreams would come true.  My first memory was when I was three years old sitting on my tricycle in my driveway; I remember thinking, “Why am I only three years old? I wish I was a big girl already so I could travel the world!”  It was a pretty courageous thought for a three year old, but my imagination at this age took my mind years ahead of my age!

UC.com: Motivation is a passion of yours. Do you remember when you first started try to motivate those around you and a success story that comes to mind of someone whose life was changed due to your motivation?

MLM: My favorite quote is “Use your talent, your influence and your experience, not just to accomplish your goals, but to help release a dream in someone else.”

I have always been an extremely happy, motivated and driven person!  Being the cheerleader in my own life was rewarding, but there came a time in my life when motivating myself wasn’t enough.  My first success story has been the most rewarding event in my entire life.  My older sister and I were two different people, and because we didn’t have much in common, we never were very close in high school.  After high school, she became very unhappy in her chosen life, was unhealthy, and was gaining weight because of this. It hurt me to see her like this, so I stepped in with my motivational enthusiasm, put her on a diet and a exercise schedule.  She started to see results immediately and with her new found happiness, we became very close, dieting and training together. In less than six months, my sister lost 80 pounds and was happier than she had ever been! Changing someone’s life like this was the most rewarding experience in my entire life, and made me realize my purpose on this earth!

UC.com: Who inspires/motivates you?

MLM: Being a fine artist my entire life, music has always inspired me artistically! Listening and dancing to my favorite song unleashes my creativity like nothing else can! Professionally, challenging myself daily with small goals motivated me to keep pushing towards the larger goals in my life!  In my opinion the best way to keep yourself on track is to celebrate the small victories!

UC.com: I am sure you hear it all the time, people want to be fit and eat well but they don’t have the time. For people with busy schedules, what are ways someone can fit some exercise into their day, and some good/healthy food one can eat on the run?

MLM: I think this is the worst excuse in the book.  If you don’t have time to take care of yourself, you are just quickly moving closer and closer to old age and sickness!  Taking care of your health should be your first priority and the first thing you think about when you wake up, because the longer you live the longer you can enjoy the fruit of all your daily labor!  My best advice is to start replacing what you already eat with healthier options.  Everyone knows that wheat bread is better than white bread and Diet Coke is better than Coke!  Make smart decisions!  In my opinion, the enemies to our nations health are sugar and carbohydrates! Your body has absolutely no need for sugar and contrary to popular believe you do NOT need carbohydrates for energy!  I receive all my energy from the vegetables in my diet.  My daily diet is carbohydrate free, gluten free, and sugar free, and I have more energy than I have ever had!

Confessions of a Marlins Cheerleader

By Nikki Braverman

jenmarlinmermaidSure, some of us have been hitting the gym, but unfortunately it takes more than an express session on the treadmill to terminate that spare tire.

Baseball season is imminent (Marlins spring training begins February 27 in Jupiter) and I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Jen, a Marlins Mermaid. The Marlins Mermaids have an impressive list of accomplishments, including having been named one of Miami’s Top Ten sexiest jobs by the E! Channel.

Jen told me about her exercise regimen – which, as you can see from her photo, is an effective one!

Initially, I was looking forward to hearing Jen’s tips and tricks — super foods she indulges in, the newest exercise moves, secret detox tips, or dietary splurges. Well, Jen is all game and no play. She says there are no secrets to a getting a hot body other than hard work and dedication.

Check out these Q & A’s and judge for yourself!

Clean Plate Charlie: Tell us about yourself and what brought you to the Marlins Mermaids?

Jen: I am 23 years old and have been dancing practically my whole life. I am also interested in being involved in communications and promotional work. I decided to audition back in 2008 and have been a Marlins Mermaid ever since.

Clean Plate Charlie: What does it take to be a Marlins Mermaid? Are there height and weight requirements like in the modeling industry?

Jen: I would not say that height and weight is a requirement as much as attitude and energy is – being a Marlins Mermaid entails being a great dancer and bringing positive energy to the team and the community.

Clean Plate Charlie: Your dance routines quite are impressive. How often do you practice?

Jen: The Marlins Mermaids are scheduled to train three times a week for four hours. Each session is divided between learning and practicing the dance routines and then cardio and weight training. I also go to the gym on my own free time.

Clean Plate Charlie: How do you manage to juggle work, school and practice, all while staying on a healthy diet?

Jen: I typically start my day off with egg whites for breakfast and pack a healthy sandwich for lunch. This helps me feel refreshed through the day and prevents me from turning to unhealthy lunch options such as fast food. I practice and train at night.

Clean Plate Charlie: What do you generally serve yourself at home?

Jen: I enjoy eating lean protein such as white chicken or fish along with a vegetable. I also stay away from rice.

Clean Plate Charlie: Did you make any exceptions during the holidays?

Jen: I personally enjoy the way I eat, and my family served turkey and vegetables during the holidays, so cheating was not an issue.

Clean Plate Charlie: Does constantly working around concession stands interfere with your diet? Do you often indulge in any guilty pleasures such as hotdogs, popcorn, candy, beer or any other baseball game favorites?

Jen: I personally love popcorn, but at the games we are too busy working to go to the concession stands. Our locker rooms are provided with healthy snacks such as salads and sandwiches.

Clean Plate Charlie: Every year the Marlins Mermaids come out with a sexy calendar. What do you do to prep for the photo shoot?

Jen: Whenever we have a shoot, special event or fashion show, we add on 1-2 additional training sessions. So, in addition to the 3 scheduled sessions, we will also meet up on Saturdays and sometimes Sundays.

Clean Plate Charlie: In your opinion, what would you say is more beneficial to staying in shape – a healthy diet or exercise?

Jen: Everyone is different, but I feel that training hard has a more drastic affect on my body than diet does. Although, to achieve a certain standard of fitness, you have to comply with both a healthy diet and fitness regimen.

Clean Plate Charlie: How do stay motivated and committed to a healthy diet and exercise regimen, despite having such a busy lifestyle?

Jen: I don’t see eating healthy and working out as a barrier. Living a healthy lifestyle benefits me physically and mentally. I also find that being a Marlin’s Mermaid is a privilege and an opportunity, so I don’t take it for granted.

Marlins Mermaids Unveil New Calendar

First 5,000 fans on Aug. 30 to receive 2009-2010 edition

Major League Baseball’s premier dance team celebrated the unveiling of their latest calendar with a fashion show and party at one of Miami’s hottest clubs.

Chelsea (left) and Alessandra were revealed as the latest Mermaids calendar cover girls

The Marlins Mermaids strutted their stuff at the exclusive LIV Nightclub at Fontainebleau Miami Beach on Friday night as they debuted their 2009-2010 calendar before a packed venue.

The Mermaids, which were recently named the second sexiest job in Miami by E! Entertainment’s Sexiest Miami Jobs, modeled designs by LF Miami, Nikki’s Beach House Boutique and Eva Danielle to the latest beats as a crowd of fans cheered them on. The ladies also performed some of their dance routines before revealing the highly anticipated cover of this year’s calendar.

Chelsea and Alessandra, a pair of second-year Mermaids, celebrated after they were revealed as the latest Marlins Mermaids calendar cover girls. Both Mermaids made the calendar as rookies but never expected to have the honor of gracing the latest cover on the Mermaids calendar.

“It’s a really amazing feeling,” Chelsea said. “Being a Mermaid has been so much fun for me. It’s been the best thing I have ever done. The Mermaids have given me a lot of opportunities to further my career as well as make a ton of great friends.”

Alessandra agrees with her cover mate and was equally as surprised when DJ M. DOT, the official Marlins DJ and Friday night’s master of ceremonies, revealed this year’s cover for all to see.

“It was shocking,” Alessandra said. “It’s such a big deal to make the cover and I never would have thought I was going to be one of the ones to get on it. It was a lot of fun participating in the making of this calendar and I’m really excited to have been chosen as a cover model.”

The calendar, which contains twelve months of sizzling hot photos of some of Miami’s sexiest ladies, will be exclusively distributed one day only. The first 5,000 fans in attendance at the series finale against the San Diego Padres on Aug. 30 will receive a Marlins Mermaids calendar. The game starts at 1:10 at Land Shark Stadium
