Whats Happens If There is a Strike or Lockout?
Not to be a worry wart, but the collective bargaining agreements for the NFL, NBA and the NHL all expire in 2011. I would think the economy would doing better in two years, but who knows what’s going to happen.
I got to thinking about what would happen to Pro Cheer Squads if a league were on strike. Would there still be practices? Would demand for appearances go down?
All three leagues have had labor stoppages before so there are Cheerleaders and Dancers who’ve already lived through this. If you’re an NBA Dancer from the 1998-99 season, an NFL Cheerleader from 1982 or 1987, or an NHL Ice Girl from 2004-05 (or 1994-95, were there even Ice Girls back then?), leave a comment or email us how your team handled the disruption.

I know that when the NLL season was heading for a lockout a few years ago, they canceled auditions for the Bandettes and were just gonna do appearances with the past year’s squad. Then of course the season was back on and auditions were rescheduled. I think it’d be kinda tough to do that with the NFL, though. Unless the demand for appearances dropped that much, they’d still have to select a new squad…not everyone comes back each year and when the Jills carried 48 girls on the 2008 squad, they still were having a tough time meeting all their appearance requests.
I can’t speak of the NBA or the NHL, but I suspect the NFL will work out something with it’s players association to allow play to continue. When the CBA expires in 2010, they’ll still play but it’s going to be an uncapped year (no upper threshold, no minimum threshold). There’s too much money at stake for games not to be played, literally billions of TV revenue dollars.
I suspect play will go on and so will the cheerleading. Of course, if there is stoppage of play, cheerleading squads could form their own league independent squads, like all those NFL Europe teams, and perform at various functions.
To finish pro sports CBA 2011, you should read Major League Baseball. Thanks
