Dance Fever at Warriors Tryouts

Indoor football team holds tryouts for dance squad

By Pat Muir
Yakima Herald-Republic

By the time I arrived at the Howard Johnson motel for the Yakima Valley Warriors dance team auditions, the 19 young women trying to make the team had been hard at work for more than an hour.

“We already did across-the-floor combinations, split checks and kick checks,” Crystal Chestnut, the dance team coordinator, told me.

Drat — I had been so looking forward to across-the-floor combinations.

I jest, of course. I don’t know a box step from a pas de bourrée. This was new territory for me, here in this fluorescent-lit conference room on Saturday. It was me, Chestnut, team entertainment coordinator Krista Coplin, team owner Mike Mink and a couple of other team officials. And, of course, 19 aspiring dancers wearing little more than spandex shorts and sports bras.

From where I was sitting — a Howard Johnson’s conference room that was starting to smell a little sweaty — there wasn’t much glamour to it. Team officials ran the dancers through drills. Then had them audition in pairs. Then had them do it all again. Frankly it looked like hard work.

“One, two, three, four,” Chestnut shouted to her charges. “Come together! Release! Release! There you go.”

It was enough to make a guy wonder why anyone would put themselves through this. Even those who make the dance team aren’t going to be paid, at least not during the team’s first year. They’ll have to practice for two hours twice a week and give up plenty of their lives to be part of this team.

The dancers, who ranged in age from 18 to 28, were uniformly polite and cheery when you asked why they wanted to be part of the team. The answers ranged from “I just love to dance,” to “I want to be a role model for young girls.”

“It’s like every girl’s dream to be a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader,” said 18-year-old Allie Stiffler of Naches. “But what are the odds of that?”

While the accuracy of her “every girl’s dream” statement may be a bit dubious, its sincerity was off the charts — she would have loved to be a Cowboys Cheerleader. But she’s realistic. So instead, here she was trying out for the Yakima Valley Lady Warriors Dance Team.

The Warriors are a new team that will play in the American Indoor Football Association. Its first game should be in April in the Yakima Valley SunDome.

My favorite prospective team member on Saturday was Kristine Gimlin, a 28-year-old mother of five from Prosser. She surprised me and the judges with her energy. I mean this mother of five was straight bringin’ it on every routine.

“She’s been the best dancer so far,” one judge said.

“Amazing energy,” said another.

“Yeah, she’s a firecracker, that girl.”

That’s not why she was my favorite, though. What I liked most about Gimlin was her answer about why she wanted to be on the team. Being part of a team, she said, is its own reward.

“I wish there were 19 spots, so everyone could make it,” Gimlin said.

When I left, after several hours at the audition, the team officials still hadn’t made their final decisions. But I was right there with her, wishing all 19 could make it.

Everybody, from former high school cheerleaders to professional dancers, who are 18 years or older, are invited to tryout to be a part of the ERIEsistables, the dance team that will support the new professional arena football team. The new ownership group announced in December that a new team name will replace the RiverRats to best reflect Erie and its hometown pride. The new team name will be announced on Thursday, January 14th at a morning press conference.

Billed as the “Hottest Show on Turf”, the ERIEsistables, a field of 20 dancers, will emphasize entertainment and team promotion. Those interested in trying out will need to bring a $15 registration fee, complete a registration form and submit it along with a photo and bio. Audition attire should include a sports bra and shorts with tights underneath.

Rebecca Rozic began her dance career in her hometown of Kansas City, MO. She spent her childhood years dancing at White Oak Dance Academy, and continued dancing through high school. Rozic next danced for the Kansas City T-Bones baseball team and the Kansas City Comets indoor soccer team while she pursued her bachelor’s degree in Business at University of Missouri-Kansas City. She relocated to Erie four years ago with her employer, GE-Transportation, and joined Penn State Erie, the Behrend College dance team while pursing her graduate studies there. Rozic also danced for the Erie Freeze for two years, serving one of those as captain. She joined the RiverRats for their 2008 Erie inaugural season as captain. According to Rozic, “I am so excited to continue as ERIEsistables director for the fourth season. The team is an integral part of team promotion, and with the new ownership group, Erie’s hometown pride is contagious! We have many new activities planned, including a cheer-dance camp for future ERIEsistables members. It’s going to be a banner year!” Rebecca and her husband Tim Rozic currently reside in Harborcreek.

Rozic, ERIEsistables director, along with additional veteran ERIEsistables, will be at the Millcreek Mall on Saturday January 16th from 1-3 p.m. looking for 2010 recruits. Be sure to visit them at the Main Stage to get information about the January 23rd tryouts and find out what it’s like to be an ERIEsistable. Applications will also be available at the Millcreek Mall and on site or in advance by e-mailing rrozic@erieprofessionalfootball.com. More information is available by calling Rebecca Rozic at 814-688-4946.

Elizabeth Guaraldo, New Director of Baltimore Mariners Cheerleading

Congratulations to good friend of the blog Elizabeth Guaraldo, who is the new Director of Cheerleading for the AIFA Baltimore Mariners.

From Baltimore Mariners.com

This will be Elizabeth Guaraldo’s first season with the Baltimore Mariners. Guaraldo has been the Director of the National Indoor Soccer League’s Baltimore Blast Cheerleaders since 2007. The Blast Cheerleaders have released two swimsuit calendars, performed at the AST Dew Tour and have traveled to Bermuda to participate in the Island Soccer League (ISL) All Star game that took place this summer. Prior to working with the Mariners, Guaraldo was a 2005-2006 Washington Redskins Cheerleader. She went to college at UMBC where she was on their dance team as both a member and a captain.

Liz tells us that she’s still with the Blast Organization as well, so she’s going to be handling two dance teams at once. If anyone’s suited to handle such a incredible time commitment, it’s Liz. She earned her Masters in Education from Johns Hopkins, completing 39 credit hours in just one year, all while working an internship and coaching the Blast Cheerleaders.
