Pacemates at Pacers FanJam 2015

On October 17th, the Indiana Pacers held their traditional FanJam, a free event for the fans to see the newest edition of the team and whet their collective appetites for the upcoming season. Just like the basketball side, fans could also meet and see an on-court performance of the 2015-2016 Pacemates.

I went through the autograph line twice, and I told the Pacemates that I didn’t like how my first photographs turned out. Veteran Pacemate Arbara joked, “Did I break your camera?” No Arbara, you can bust some moves, and melt some hearts, but breaking a camera is not in the realm of possibilities.

The Pacemates are not the only dancers on FanJam day, though. The rookie Pacers have their annual dance off, in which the dance moves are generally, well, underwhelming (causing mass hilarity for the veterans) compared to their low post moves. Though rookie Joe Young’s performance to “Watch Me” exceeded expectations, the Pacemates still rule the court of dance talent.

Here are photos of this year’s FanJam:

Four Code Red Alumni Selected for Indiana Pacemates

Four former Code Red Dancers were selected to be members of this year’s Indiana Pacemates squad.

Alexis Austin, Brooke Owsley, Jordan Whitacre and Kendra Kolb made it through the final round of auditions Thursday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Candidates performed an opening routine, then breakout performances in mini-squads and answered a question on stage. Over the past week, the finalists took part in interviews, photo shoots, and rehearsals to prepare for Thursday’s showcase.

The Indiana Pacemates are the official dance team for the NBA’s Indiana Pacers.

Am I Wrong, or were the Colts Cheerleaders and Pacemates in the 500 Festival Parade?

Indianapolis has some great traditions centered around Memorial Day weekend, but a relatively recent tradition that MUST be maintained forever and ever is that the Colts Cheerleaders and Pacemates perform during the opening musical number at the 500 Festival Parade in downtown Indy. This year, the tradition continued, as the Colts Cheerleaders, Pacemates, and other local dancers started off the parade by dancing on the checkerboard carpet. And then the ICC and Pacemates performed with parade’s opening musical act, Nico & Vinz, Oslo, Norway’s biggest export since non-fillet fresh fish.

And let’s give a salute to a different kind of “ultimate cheerleader.” The 500 Festival Parade’s Grand Marshalls were the 1955 Crispus Attacks High School basketball team and cheerleaders. Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson was a big part of Crispus Attucks team that overcame obstacles and inequalities to win the 1955 Indiana state basketball tournament, becoming the nation’s first entirely African-American high school to win a championship. Upon winning the championship game, the Crispus Attucks team didn’t have the opportunity to enjoy the traditional ride in a fire truck and celebration on Monument Circle.

To honor the groundbreaking team, there was be a planned stop along the parade route, on Monument Circle. There, 60-years later, the Crispus Attucks basketball team and its cheerleaders, had their long overdue celebration, complete with music, signs, pompoms, and pictures; bringing their story full circle. So here’s a shout out to the cheerleaders finally able to cheer on their team and hear the cheers of the parade crowd.
