It was another important division game in Week 2, this time between the Denver Broncos and the Oakland Raiders, two AFC West teams. The Raiders took a 19 – 7 lead deep into the third quarter before the Broncos scored 13 unanswered points for the 20 – 19 win. A blocked extra point was the difference in the game.

The Los Angeles Rams look like a juggernaut, steam rolling the Raiders in Week 1 and crushing their division rival Cardinals in Week 2. They truly look like a Super Bowl contender with that dominant defense and high scoring offense. The Detroit Lions visited the San Francisco 49ers in a game that should have been a fairly easy contest on paper. The Lions were arguably the second worst team in the NFL in Week 1 after getting destroyed by the New York Jets and having to fly across the country to play an up and coming 49ers team should have been bad news for the Lions. But a funny thing happened on the way to the rout…the Lions actually came to play and gave the 49ers a surprisingly tough game, scoring the last 14 points before losing 30 – 27.
With the win, the 49ers stay in contention for the NFC West race with the undefeated Los Angeles Rams and that is likely to be a two horse race as the Seahawks and Cardinals have significant issues. Staying within a game of the lead at this stage in the season is critical because it appears that only one team from the NFC West will make the playoffs.

The resurgent Cleveland Browns came to town to play one of the favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, the New Orleans Saints. It was a surprisingly close contest and the Saints had to sweat out a missed extra point by the Browns that could have won the game, before pulling out the win on a late field goal, 21 – 18.

The amazing season of journeyman QB Ryan Fitzpatrick continued as he threw for four TDs in a second consecutive game and led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a victory over the defending Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. Fitzpatrick has played so exceptionally that some people feel that incumbent QB Jameis Winston may be out of a job when is comes off his suspension. I don’t know about that, but I would definitely consider keeping Fitzpatrick in the line up until the wheels come off the wagon.

The most competitive division in the NFL is arguably the NFC South and a division match up between two of the three contenders is a big deal. So, it came as a surprise to some of us that in Week 2, Matt Ryan became a running QB…well sort of. Ryan rushed for 18 yards and two TDs and led the Falcons to a victory over the Carolina Panthers. Its still early in the season, but this win could have long term implications in the playoff race. And next week, its another huge division game with the rival Saints.
