Why did you become a professional cheerleader?

I grew up in sports. I grew up in elite sports camps, and excelled well above average in mainly basketball and track and field. In elementary I got a small glimpse of performing when I was on a community competition hip hop and drill team but again was always pushed towards other sports. In high school I decided to make my own choice & tryout for the cheer team and dance team . I then went on to college and was apart of the competitive spirit line as well. Although I started what is considered “late” in the cheer/dance world I have found my passion & after college I told myself I was just not ready to stop yet! I love everything about professional cheer.

What was your favorite experience as a professional cheerleader?

Definitely has to be appearances. One of my favorite hobbies is volunteering and community service so the fact that it’s apart of the job is awesome! What is your motto to live by?

What advice would you tell someone who aspires to become a professional cheerleader?

Faith, consistency & hard work. You definitely have to believe in yourself and work at your craft! Training is everything and confidence is everything! Be consistent with technique training and your physical health! If you really want it you have to go for it 100%!

Why did you become a professional cheerleader?

Dance has always been a huge part of my life. I started at the age of 5 and have been a part of competition and high school dance teams. I was a student in my college dance program and missed being a member of a team. I wanted to continue to further my passion for dance and expand my horizons.

What was your favorite experience as a professional cheerleader?

The rush of running out to set for a routine at my first game! Performing in front of a huge crowd is always a favorite experience.

What is your favorite dance style?

I would definitely admit that jazz is my favorite dance style. I love a fast paced and fiery routine to pump me up! It also gives me a chance to show my technique.

My mom lost an 8 month battle against lung cancer and her fight and drive to beat it inspires me greatly. She shared the same love for dance as I did and I will continue to dance in her spirit.

What advice would you tell someone who aspires to become a professional cheerleader?

Focus on yourself as an athlete and dancer, your lifestyle will change dramatically for the better. Hit the gym and take as many dance classes as possible. Dance your heart out and leave nothing on that audition floor.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Hopefully in ten years, I will still be working as a Recreation Therapist and a dance teacher/coach. I will be married with a family and a pug. I also aspire to open my own competitive dance studio and offer classes for dancers with disabilities.

Cheerleader Profile: Ladies of Ontario Fury Dancer Jessica

This is Jessica, a first year member of the Ladies of Ontario Fury.

Fury16v110

Why did you become a professional cheerleader?

I’ve been a technically trained studio dancer my whole life. It wasn’t until I started college that I even considered dancing on a team. After auditioning for my school’s team at the beginning of my freshman year, I was immediately hooked. Dancing for a crowd of fans cheering you on is such a different thrill than performing on a stage in a theater, and so much more exciting! I’m doing what I love for a living, and putting my dance degree to good use!

What was your favorite experience as a professional cheerleader?

After auditions were over, we had a weekend boot camp where us rookies got to learn the ropes of being on a professional team. That was the first time it really hit me that my job is so much more than having rehearsals and performing at games. We represent such an amazing foundation and inspire so many of our fans to pursue their own dreams and I’m so grateful to have been given the opportunity to experience something like this.

What is your favorite dance move? What is your go to dance move?

I’ve always been a leaper instead of a turner, so I’m always throwing leaps into my choreography or freestyle. Tilt jumps, single stag leaps, surprise leaps…just to name a few. But you always gotta throw on a big smile and some hair-ography for extra style!

What are the three words that describe you?

Optimistic, energetic, and easygoing.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I was a HUGE choir/drama nerd growing up. I sang in choir for 8 years and in high school I started participating in my school’s musical productions. I would love to get back into singing and acting one of these days! Some of my favorite musicals are West Side Story, Chicago, Avenue Q, Spring Awakening, and Wicked.

What is your favorite music genre?

I like just about all genres of music! I prefer music that makes me want to move, so I usually stick to more upbeat genres like dance, pop, and hip-hop. But I also listen to reggae pretty often, mostly when I’m driving to and from work because it keeps me calm in all that traffic. J

What is the one thing you can’t live without?

The beach! I grew up right next to it, and sometimes I wonder why I even left. I’m always happiest when I’m around warm sand, sunshine, and the sound of the ocean.

Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? Or some other app. What’s your favorite app?

Snapchat! I like seeing little pieces of everyone’s day and what they’re up to. And of course sending ugly selfies and pictures with all those cool filters to my closest friends is always fun!

Who is the one person that inspires you the most?

I know this isn’t one person, but both of my parents have been such strong influences in my life. They’ve never once discouraged me from following my heart and doing what I love and always believed in me. They will forever be my biggest support group and my number one fans. I love you both and I don’t know what I’d do or where I’d be without you!

What is your motto to live by?

There’s both good and bad in life, and you can’t have one without the other.

What advice would you tell someone who aspires to become a professional cheerleader?

Just TRY, and don’t give up! I know that’s a very generic piece of advice, but if I ever let any of the rejection I’ve ever gotten in my life stop me from achieving my goals, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Just smile, stand tall, and rock what you’ve got! All your talent is bound to be noticed.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Ten years!? I don’t even know where I see myself next week! Ha ha! But I do know that at some point in my future, I’d like to have a family of my own and hopefully be in charge of my own dance studio.

Cheerleader Profile: Ladies of Ontario Fury Dancer Ashlynne

Introducing Ashlynne, a first year member of the Ladies of Ontario Fury. Let’s get to know her a little better.

Fury16v224

Why did you become a professional cheerleader?

I’ve been dancing for my whole life, but my experience on my college dance team at UCR was what made me realize I wanted to be on a professional dance team! In my senior year, I knew that I wasn’t ready to give up performing with a team, so that’s why I decided to audition for Fury. I wanted to be working with girls who have the same kind of dedication to dancing and a team as I do.

What was your favorite experience as a professional cheerleader?

Every time I run out onto that turf. Performing in front of a crowd gives me the best rush, and I live for that feeling! I also really enjoy meeting the fans and taking pictures with them; they’re always so excited and that makes me even more happy to be there.

What is your favorite dance style?

I think that contemporary and lyrical styles are so beautiful, and I love doing those and putting all of my emotion into it. But sassy jazz is the most fun for me, especially to perform!

What is your favorite dance move? What is your go to dance move?

Leaps are definitely my favorite. My go-to is always a hair flip! ?

What are the three words that describe you?

Passionate, because when I know what I want, I put everything I have into it. Talkative; whenever I’m with my friends, we can go on talking for hours and hours! And nocturnal haha. All of my energy comes out at night!

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I’m an extremely competitive person and a perfectionist. I grew up as a serious figure skater for 11 years, competing regionally and nationally, and that mindset has carried out into my life after skating. Even things I do for fun, like dance, I always want to be my very best, and if I make any mistakes it bothers me a lot. Sometimes I have to remind myself to lighten up and not be too hard on myself because I’m doing this for the love of dance and performing, not to be perfect!

What is your guilty pleasure?

Netflix. I try not to start new shows as much as possible, because once I start, I can’t stop. I’m definitely a binge-watcher. I’ve watched an entire 24-episode season in a single weekend! ?

Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? Or some other app. What’s your favorite app?

It would probably be a tie between Instagram and Snapchat. With Instagram, I love being able to share pictures with my friends, and go back to see my favorite memories all in one place. But with Snapchat, it’s cool that I can keep up with what my friends are up to on a regular basis and share my fun moments instantly!

Who is the one person that inspires you the most?

My older brother. We used to fight a lot when we were younger, but now I really look up to him. He is always trying to better himself, whether it’s academically or just as a person, even though making changes in your life is one of the most difficult things to do. I aspire to be like that as well.

What is your motto to live by?

“Work hard, be yourself, and have fun!” That’s from Michelle Kwan, a legendary figure skater. I have always looked up to her, and that quote really resonates with me. Work hard for what you want, always stay true to yourself, and do what makes you happy to make the most out of your life!

What advice would you tell someone who aspires to become a professional cheerleader?

Never give up! If you know in your heart that it’s your passion, then go for it. Auditions can be really scary and intimidating, but just getting that experience is so beneficial. Just because one team doesn’t have a spot for you doesn’t mean that another team wouldn’t be honored to have you, or that the following year won’t be your year for your dream team. As long as you want it, keep trying! Don’t let yourself look back one day and wish you had tried to follow your dreams when you had the chance.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

I hope I will have started a family, still be living in Southern California, and be working as an occupational therapist, with lots of memories of dancing and traveling to look back on!

Snapshots: The 2016 Ladies of Ontario Fury

I consider the period after the holidays to be a time of relaxation and rejuvenation. And January and February are the months that I spend with the Ontario Fury. It’s a fun experience, more laid back and less stressful that other events because the Fury staff is so welcoming and the shooting environment is more chill. And the Ladies of Ontario Fury are really fun to shoot…its all good.

So here are some snapshots I took last Sunday as the Ontario Fury defeated the Soles de Sonora 7-4 to stay in the playoff race.

This is Alex, a first year member of the Ladies of Ontario Fury. Let’s get to know a little more about her.

Fury16v164

Why did you become a professional cheerleader?

I auditioned for the Ladies of Ontario Fury for a variety of reasons. I have a huge passion for dance. I have been dancing since I was three and have loved it ever since. After my years of high school dance teams and college dance teams, I was looking for more. I wanted to become a professional dancer because it seemed like the next step in my dancing career. I’m always pushing myself to grow not only as a dancer, but as a person as well, and Fury has helped me do that.

What was your favorite experience as a professional cheerleader?

My favorite experience so far has been when I got the opportunity to give back to the community during the 8th Annual Colonies Holiday Miracle Event. This program gives back to families in need and helps spread some holiday cheer. I had the pleasure of taking a little boy shopping around just in time for Christmas. We went to three different stores and he got a lot of cool gifts for his mom and brothers; and of course we were able to cross off a couple of his Christmas list items as well! The whole day was such a rewarding and fun experience! I’m thankful for Ontario Fury for not only giving me three privilege to dance and perform; but also do work like this and with the Fury Foundation!

What is your favorite dance style?

My favorite dance style is fast jazz. I love being sassy and dancing to upbeat fast songs. I grew up in competitive dance, so I love anything that allows me to show off my technique!

What advice would you tell someone who aspires to become a professional cheerleader?

Some advice that I would give is to first find confidence in yourself. It’s very hard to go out and in front of thousands of spectators when you aren’t confident. In addition to that I would take as many dance classes as possible. You can never take too many technique classes!

Cheerleader Profile: Ladies of Ontario Fury Dancer McKenzie

This is McKenzie, a second year member of the Ladies of Ontario Fury. Let’s take a moment to get to know her.

Fury16v166

Why did you become a professional cheerleader?

Performing has always been a huge passion of mine ever since I started dancing when I was 3 years old. As I grew older I began competing on my dance studios team, then moved onto cheerleading through high school, and then continued onto the collegiate level for two years. When the opportunity to audition for a professional team came across my path there was no doubt in my mind that I had to jump on the opportunity. Being a professional cheerleader for the past two years has been one of my biggest accomplishments. Being able to perform on the field and to be able give back to my community has been more than a dream come true.

What was your favorite experience as a professional cheerleader?

My favorite experience, hands down, has to be the very first time I stepped onto that turf, looked out into the crowd, and took a deep breath in. I remembering being able to hear my heart beating so loudly I could hear it in my ears. Seeing all of the fans, including my family, and hearing the roar of the crowd and our music still to this day gives me chills. That moment is something I will forever cherish.

What is your favorite dance move? What is your go to dance move?

Just one!? That’s not fair, I have so many! For me, my favorite dance move is anything that I can do a hair flip, shimmy, and shake. My go to dance move, technically speaking is a left high kick, but I can also do a pretty mean hand jive! ;D Ha ha.

What are the three words that describe you?

Adventurous, supportive, and courageous.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

Something most people don’t know about me is that I am a huge gym junkie. I go to the gym 5-6 times a week. If I don’t go, I legit get sad. Lifting, cardio, yoga, I love it all! Challenging and pushing myself is definitely a hobby of mine. Before I go to bed I plan my workouts and it makes me excited to wake up in the morning.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Donuts and those cheesy wedding videos on Vimeo. They definitely make me cry but that’s when the donuts come to the rescue! Haha.

What is the one thing you can’t live without?

My family and friends! They’re my support system! They let my dreams run wild yet they keep me grounded. Without them I’d be lost. Oh and coffee! Without that I’m a grumpy zombie.

Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? Or some other app. What’s your favorite app?

Instagram, Instagram, INSTAGRAM! I love taking pictures, sharing pictures, and seeing other peoples pictures! I’m definitely that annoying girl that constantly asks to take pictures!

Who is the one person that inspires you the most?

My Grandpa. He is by far the most kind hearted person I have ever met. He would do anything to see his loved ones healthy, happy, and successful. I truly admire that and hope to by like him one day. Quite literally, if it weren’t for him I wouldn’t be able to be doing the things I’m doing today. Everything I do, I do for him, and to make him proud.

What is your motto to live by?

“Those who don’t jump will never fly.” I’m a huge believer in taking the risk, even if it scares you, you never know unless you try. It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting. Sometimes you have to trust the unknown and take the chance.

What advice would you tell someone who aspires to become a professional cheerleader?

Never give up! It’s definitely a long and tricky road but it is 110% worth every bit of it. Set a goal, work hard every day, stay true to yourself, and just have fun! Pay no mind to the fear of failure, just keep doing your thing. Keep an open heart and a strong spirit. You’ve got to go out and fight for it. Nobody knows what you want except you, and nobody will be as sorry as you if you don’t get it. So don’t ever give up on your dreams.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Ten years? Oh man! I don’t even know what I want for dinner! Haha. In ten years I’ll hope to have my Bachelors and Masters in Communications. Maybe be working as an entertainment news anchor for E! News. I hope to be traveling the world or living in Dublin with my two future dogs. I hope to still be happy and healthy and I could never ask for more!
