All 22 members of the Sixers Dancers will wear the dress – created in the team’s signature blue and red colors, and accented with a silver Sixers logo pin – on the court during pregame introductions and the National Anthem at the Philadelphia 76ers’ Opening Night on Saturday, November 1 and at every Sixers home game this season. The team will also wear the dress at select off-court appearances throughout the season.

Sixers Dancers To Wear Dress Designed By Nicole Miller For 2014-15 Season

From Sixers.com

The Philadelphia 76ers today announced that the Sixers Dancers, presented by Parx Casino®, will wear an exclusive dress created by legendary fashion designer Nicole Miller for the 2014-15 season.

The Sixers Dancers Signature Dress by Nicole Miller will be formally unveiled in a ceremony on Wednesday, October 22 at 12:00 p.m. at the Nicole Miller Philadelphia store (The Bellevue, 200 S. Broad St., Philadelphia, Pa.).

Details about the look will be posted by the Philadelphia 76ers, Sixers Dancers and Nicole Miller on their respective social media accounts in the weeks leading up to the unveiling (list of accounts provided at the end of this release).

“Nicole Miller is an internationally-respected designer and iconic brand with strong ties to the Philadelphia region,” said Sixers CEO Scott O’Neil. “Her dresses define class, confidence and are undeniably influential in our city, making her the perfect partner in creating a new look for the Sixers Dancers.”

“I am excited about this partnership because the story of the Sixers Dancers goes hand in hand with our latest campaign, which is based around the tag line ‘you don’t have to wear a suit to feel strong,’” said Nicole Miller. “I think this group of young women really exemplify that motto. They are strong, confident, and driven.”

“Mary Dougherty has once again brought us the best of Philadelphia,” said Nicole Miller CEO Bud Konheim. “The Sixers Dancers represent class, fun, intelligence, and beauty, and Nicole Miller is proud to be associated with such an incredible organization. There is a tremendous value to local partnerships, and with our strong presence in Philly, the Sixers are a natural fit.”

The Sixers Dancers will showcase the dress on the court during pregame introductions and the National Anthem, as well as at select off-court appearances throughout the season. The Sixers collaborated locally with Mary Dougherty of Nicole Miller Philadelphia and Nicole Miller’s corporate team to create the exclusive look.

“Partnering with Nicole Miller, a world-class designer, allows us to elevate the Sixers Dancers’ brand in dynamic ways for the 2014-15 season,” said Sixers Dancers Head Coach Dayna Hafetz. “As we prepare for the start of the season, we could not be more excited to debut this new look for our fans.”

“Nicole Miller Philadelphia is proud to collaborate with the Philadelphia 76ers on the Signature Dress,” said Mary Dougherty, owner of Nicole Miller Philadelphia. “The dancers bring excitement to every Sixers game and the opportunity to outfit them in a timeless Nicole Miller dress was a slam dunk.”

The Sixers Dancers, presented by Parx Casino®, are entering their 18th season as an integral part of the team’s game night entertainment, performing multiple times and visiting fans at every home game. Off the court, the careers, educational accomplishments and community involvement of the Sixers Dancers will empower young girls in the Philadelphia region to pursue their goals, while also inspiring them to be beautiful inside and out.

Sixers Dream Team: Keeping it in the Family

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a request for help with identifying dancers who have other family members who have also danced or cheered professionally. I was convinced it was happening a lot more often than we knew. And the dance team from Philadelphia 76ers proved me right. Rebecca Timms from the Sixers organization came through for me in a way I never imagined. She gave me sisters, she gave me cousins, and she gave me a mother/daughter duo. Complete with funny hat. And one of them is the coach! This, my friends, is what we call a HOME RUN. In scrabble, this would be a quadruple word score.

First up, we have cousins Erica and Nicole, both team captains during their time on the squad.

Erica joined the team in 2006 and danced with them through 2012. She was a captain during her last two years on the team. Nicole joined the team during Erica’s last year. She is currently in her third year on the squad, and her first year as a captain.

Next we have sisters Danielle and Valerie.

Danielle became a Sixers Dancer in 2007 and retired after the 2012-13 season. She was a captain during her last two years on the team. Valerie joined the team in 2011, when the name changed from the Sixers Dancers to the Dream Team, and she is currently in her third season on the team.

And finally, we have mother and daughter Dayna and Cheryl

Cheryl was on the team back when they were called the Liberty Belles. I’m not sure what year this photo came from, but the hair is telling me late 60s/early 70s. Dayna danced for seven seasons before retiring in 2006 as Assistant Captain. Three years later, she was hired as head coach of the Sixers Dancers, and is in her sixth year in that role.

There is clearly a lot of family love going on here, so if you have a sister (or a cousin) and the both of you can dance your tails off, get thee to Philadelphia. I’m not kidding. The Sixers Dream Team auditions are next month, with a pre-audition workshop scheduled for June 7th. (Click here for audition details.)

Actor Ernest Borgnine at the 2011 Philadelphia Sixers Dancers Finals

Okay, a change of pace today. Yes it’s Commander McHale himself at the Chickie’s & Pete’s in South Philadelphia at Sixers Dancers Auditions. Mr Borgnine had a lady friend who lived in the Philadelphia-region and so was a constant fixture in the area in the years before his death. A great actor and a good man.

This weekend, the basketball world will flock to New Orleans, the site of the 2014 NBA All-Star Game.

But it won’t just be the league’s top players who are on display. For the first time since 2007, the NBA has assembled an all-pro squad of off-court performers – the All-Star Dance Team.

Thirty girls were selected – one from each dance team in the league. Representing the Sixers is second-year Dream Team member Michelle.

“I’ve never been to New Orleans before. I’m excited to go and represent Philly!” she said.

In order to make the team, Michelle had to send a portfolio of photos and dance footage to the league’s offices in New York City. Several weeks later, she received word that she’d been selected to represent the Sixers.

“I fly down on Thursday the 12th, and once I get down there, we’re rehearsing from 3pm to 10pm,” she said. “They’ve already e-mailed me two routines to work on.”

The All-Star Dance Team will perform at multiple events throughout All-Star Weekend, so keep your eyes peeled for Michelle!

The Cheer FX and Dance FX teams from the Academy of Movement in Sinking Spring performed prior to a tip-off of a Philadelphia 76ers game at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Cheer FX and Dance FX teams from the Academy of Movement in Sinking Spring performed prior to a tip-off of a Philadelphia 76ers game at the Wells Fargo Center.

Jennifer Caputo-Pietrobone founded the Academy of Movement in 2007 with a business partner and friend, Heather Gidusko. Caputo-Pietrobone began her professional dancing career with the MISL Philadelphia Kixx Dance Team and then continued with the Philadelphia 76ers Dance Team from 2003 to 2005. She holds a degree in kinesiology with a minor in dance education from West Chester University, where she was a member, captain and choreographer for the WCU Dance Team.

Caputo-Pietrobone and Gidusko, who had formerly danced professionally as a Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader, wanted to share their passion for dance along with teaching fitness and nurturing confidence in girls and women in the community.

“We had the same concept and philosophy to provide quality movement classes that instilled fitness concepts and, more importantly, confidence in girls of all ages,” Caputo-Pietrobone said. “We were both eager to pass on our experiences to as many students as possible.”

The school has grown to include more than 400 students, ranging in age from 2 to 52, and 10 staff members, nine of whom have danced or cheered professionally.

“We offer toddler movement classes, cardio fitness-based classes, dance classes, cheer classes, tumbling classes and more,” Caputo-Pietrobone explained. “Our two newest additions to the studio are the inception of Berks County’s only all-star cheer team, Cheer FX, under the direction of Jenelle Walchek, and the studio’s new entertainment team, Dance FX, under the direction of Erica Hassler and Lauren Timek.”

Both of these teams had a chance to show off their talents and hard work during the Primetime performance. The students, ages 7 to 17, and five staff members took to the court to cheer and dance for the crowd.

“Cheer FX performed a routine jam-packed with stunting, tumbling, a jump sequence and exciting cheer-style choreography,” Caputo-Pietrobone said. “Dance FX chose a high-energy hip-hop routine. The girls were amazing. Both of the teams practiced independently for the month prior to the performance, and then a combined team practice for the first time took place the night before.”

Caputo-Pietrobone said the girls were nervous before the performance, which was to be expected. Approximately 200 of their family members and friends were in attendance to watch and support them.

“Right before they went out I told them to, ‘Take a second and take it all in. We have prepared, we have practiced, we have perfected. Now just have fun!’ ” Caputo-Pietrobone said.

A former 76ers dance teammate of Caputo-Pietrobone and director of the 76ers Dance Team, Dayne Nadler Hafetz, assisted in arranging a meet-and-greet and photo opportunity with several of the dancers and the Cheer FX and Dance FX teams.

“The girls loved every second of it, and it seemed as though everyone had a blast,” Pietrobone-Caputo said. “The meet-and-greet was definitely a highlight for some of the girls, and the support we had from friends and family was humbling.”

When asked if the Academy of Movement students have plans for a similar performance opportunity in the future, Caputo-Pietrobone responded enthusiastically, “Can’t wait to do this again at halftime of the Philadelphia Soul Game on May 11!”
